Quoted from Apinjunkie:

That's what I did, don't have any plans, I just checked out the wooden one from that site and built it with wood that I have laying around and 28 bucks in Hardware .it's not pretty, I'm no Carpenter but it's done the job super well and she's been spinning on that for almost a month now. Screwed it directly into the table once the Playfield was in place so I don't get any sideways movement.
[quoted image]

That's mine too, almost exactly - can't take any credit, I saw it somewhere else on Pinside, probably in the rotisierre thread. I had the scrap wood in the garage, total cost was about 10 bucks for the angle iron/hardware. Pf gets clamped w 2" C-clamps.

There's a good reason ours look so similar, yours was the one I saw pictured in another thread and modeled my design after. Performed flawlessly. Thanks for sharing whether you knew you did or not.

She's pretty okay. I moved my high speed between the table, propped up in the corner, propped up by her heat press, on boxes in the garage, and finally into the machine.... And then back out, back in, rinse and repeat probably a dozen times. I'm dumb.

Any chance of an updated poll,, just as a way to gauge interest in upcoming titles that may be in the works. Sure would help to know which project pins to keep an eye out for just knowing that a hardtop could be an option one day.

I hope so. Would like to see Elektra make the list. We really need al set with the small upper playfield and the small lower playfield. Those are more often than not trashed. I would be up for one or two sets of those.

Mines coming along. Went with clear starpost and clear rubbers. Also did star post lights on the slings to add some pop.
I really want to do all Blue LEDs think it might be too much.
There will be a blue trough light as well as clear pop bumpers with blue LED rings.

My shuttle was originally blue when I got it. I think it looks much better now with warm white 2smds. *shrug*

So can we expect the clear ramp to be going with all those other clear pieces

I wish. Black are the only available, I could find. Clear would look dope.

Is there any chance Revenge From Mars might be done? It seems like a lot of them have issues around the inserts. While I love the game, I don't know if I want to track down an NOS playfield ... a hardtop would be perfect for this title.

I'd be very surprised. Most rfm I've seen are looking great. That's one of the better lasting playfield I've noticed.
(I'd also like to hang one on my wall as the playfield is disproportionately better than the game itself)

Just pulled the triggered and ordered EBD. I had originally planned to get an Eight Ball Deluxe hardtop in January but other priorities got in the way. Finding myself with more time on my hands than usual thanx to our stay-at-home order, I've got the bandwidth now to work on it. I put a hardtop in my Mata Hari last year and I absolutely love it. Can't wait to "finish" my EBD....I refurb'd and painted the cabinet last year (external only with stencils). Getting a nice, shiny new playfield in it will also likely motivate me to recondition the interior of the cabinet as well. Since I'll be cleaning and tumbling topside metal parts after teardown, I might as well do the tilt board, coin door, receiver mechanism, etc. along the way.

How's Outside Edge doing shipping-wise during COVID-19? Hoping to have it mid-May.....

#1418 3 years ago

Waiting to order a couple Elektra sets if those are ever done.

My friend is doing my EBD. Probably for the best since mine is surprisingly rougher than I thought.

Just got him a new glass and plastic set today. As I already knew, SHAY is hands down the best glass for EBD. Absolutely no contest.

Can't wait to play a hardtopped EBD!

Oh and I ordered a Pinball pimp stencil kit. Not really looking forward to doing that lol

#1420 3 years ago

Any updates on future titles? I'm curious what the minimum # of hardtops sold justifies making them? I'd love to see some C or D-list games in contention. Skylab, Nugent, Charlie's Angels...

BLACKOUT! BLACKOUT! BLACKOUT!

Seeing as Mata Hari has been made and not Blackout, based on the poll is it next?!?

Wow...ordered on April 20 and it arrived today (April 27)! EBD hardtop install is next in my queue after I finish the shop job on a STTNG that I picked up a couple of months ago....about 3 more weeks.

Thanx, Outside Edge!!

This Taxi is getting it. What’s everyone’s experience with how long it takes from time you order to when you receive it? I started stripping my playfield tonight so it will be ready once it gets here.

Jmckune i ordered a Sof from them Friday and just got the update it shipped today. A lot faster then I had anticipated.

#1427 3 years ago

Good! I looked up their location and apparently it’s only 3 hours from me. Maybe if I’m lucky I’ll have it by the weekend

#1428 3 years ago

Flight 2000? I need 2.

What method did you all use to get a “jewel finish” for your inserts? The website says to either clear them or to use 2000 grit paper. I’m not near 2000 yet but a lot of them are already looking pretty good.

Wet sand to 2000 then Novus 2

I wet sanded from 400 to 800 to 2000, but I used naphtha as a wetting agent, not water. Naphtha will not raise the grain or damage the wood like water can. Then I followed up with Novus 2.

#1434 3 years ago

Wetsand with progressively finer paper to 1500-2000 then buff (with an orbital DA) with novus 3-2-1, then buff with meguiar's ultimate polish worked well for my high speed.

Quoted from KnockerPTSD:

I'd be very surprised. Most rfm I've seen are looking great.

My main playfield looks OK for the most part. It does have a couple of wear spots around inserts though and touching it up would be a nightmare given some of the detail in the art. I've seen many like mine. When the game is all lit up and playing, you tend not to notice the problems.

My other playfield looks like trash though ... a lot of inserts lifted. I'd love to hardtop that one and use it.

Quoted from KnockerPTSD:

I'd also like to hang one on my wall as the playfield is disproportionately better than the game itself

Hey now! I would certainly start ranting here, but seeing that you said you'd hang an RFM hardtop on a wall (implying you'd buy one), I'll let the comment slide .

Quoted from Jmckune:

FYI- I followed Vids guide and didn’t sand over 220 grit and sprayed clear on a 40 year old Bally and my inserts are beautiful with LED’s under the playfield. Put a light under them to see what they look like.

I did the same thing, but used varathane in a spray can to clear the inserts and it came out looking good.

#1438 3 years ago

The potential issue with clearing the inserts is insert ghosting: What happens if the clear delaminates in the future or the clear starts yellowing causing some ghosting of the inserts?? There is no way of fixing that short of removing the hardtop and starting over. By only wetsanding the inserts and then polishing them you have shiny inserts with no chance of the clear ghosting.

I opted to not clear for different reasons: I couldn't spray it worth a crap from a rattle can. Polishing seemed a far safer bet given my lack of painting skills and proper equipment to do it (including a both to keep dust and particulates out).

I thought there was a potential of dust creep if the inserts weren't sealed up.

I wouldn’t think there would be if the table was tack clothed and cleaned before installing. Anyways I got an update today. I’m expecting my hardtop to arrive tomorrow!

#1442 3 years ago

I went the polished insert route. I had some 500 and 800 grit pads left over from previous headlight restoration kit and then moved to 3000 3M trizact pads and finished with 3M's perfect-it #3. I was just using what I had on hand, but I think one could stick to what's in the 3M kit and get great results. I used a 4" DA polisher, but the kits come with a mandrel for a regular drill.

Even after using a tack cloth you want to have your holder use compressed air to blow the underside of the hardtop off, a lot of static electricity once that film is pulled off so anything in the air will stick to the underside of the hardtop. Good luck with your install.

Looks like a blackout.

Sweet! I could use one of those...... hoping Flash is in their future as well.....

Do they have an "art team" to feed them the finished art to move a project into physical form, or is it just a pair of guys covering all aspects?

#1447 3 years ago

It arrived today!! Finishing up prep on the playfield and hope to install soon!
