Welcome, Welcome in!!

I've searched and scanned the Pinside Forum for an Official Capt. Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy Club without success, so here it is!

Bring all your pics, tech, mods, Trade, For Sale, chatter and tales regarding this wonderful classic 1976 Bally EM pinball machine.

It is perfectly okay to Feel Them Bumpers and Buzz Them Buzzers!
Score More Champ and Death Before Defeat shall be words spoken here!!

Whether it's: CF, CFatBDC, Captain Fantastic, Capt Fantastic, ???... it's ALL GOOD HERE!

Now... just a little about my CF adventure:
I bought my first Capt. Fantastic around fifteen years ago. I loved it. C'mon, with its phenomenal Dave Christensen artwork, Greg Kmiec design and rockin' Sir Elton John as the subject matter... 16,155 silverball tables built, Bally just crushed it. Anyhoo, somewhere along my path I felt it more important to head in the System 11 and DMD direction than EM and I sold my beloved. And last month I found and bought an even nicer CF and it's here to stay. My new CF appears to have been routed (lightly) in Southern California from a coupe of stickers found upon its apron. I'm also pretty sure that I saw somewhere on it 1977 dates, so it may have been built later in production. It plays great and it just has one issue where the "balls in play" are not illuminating even though all five lamps are in good working order. I also want to buy a playfield protector for it in the near future.

Again, Welcome IN!!

(Here's a few pics of my Capt Fantastic)

My whole Family loves playing our Captain Fantastic. Our four year old Grandson has a Blast playing pinball

One of my first games ever. and still a favorite. I got a machine in 1997 that was in the process being parted out. No backglass, crappy playfield. Lot's of missing parts. Luckily repro glass was already available and I got one. Procured various parts and got it running. Did some rudimentary paint repair and sprayed it with a clear and it was faithfully part of my collection until about 2010. I only have room for 5 machines and after selling Centaur and Central Park and adding TZ, IJ, LOTR and FH to my TAF that I have had since 1998 CF was taken apart and relegated to the garage for storage.

I sold LOTR and am bringing CF back to life. I purchased a new repro PF maybe 10 years ago. Along the way some of the parts from CF were cannibalized into another project so I am buying various bits and pieces. The cabinet is beat although the artwork still looks OK. I am not going to "restore" it this round (who knows in the future), but I am going to swap in the new PF.

CF will ride again soon.

Did you resolve this issue ? Mine does that as well. I've been able to improve it by cleaning the wiper fingers on the ball count unit, and slightly bending them to increase contact pressure. It still isn't 100% though.

I did resolve the issue, but I have completely forgotten how I did it. My bad. I should have posted a follow-up explanation immediately afterwards. Note to self....

Our 2nd and most recent CF left our gameroom a couple years ago. It's a classic, a big beautiful piece of pinball history, fun shooter and we'll have another one here someday.

How are the sockets? I have had issues with sockets in the past where lights go out and come back on with vibrations going through the cabinet from coils firing.

Am reassembling after playfield swap and have lost some pics of which of the 2 heights white posts go where, The taller ones go over the drop targets and suppoert that plastic, but if some one has some good shots of the posts that would be great.

I have an unrepaired playfield in the shop. PM me details if you haven’t already solved it.

#11 1 year ago

Found a good pic on IPDB and am all set. Wondering what a nice playfield for restoration would go for sale?

#12 1 year ago

I may find myself in the market for one next year, so I have been casually shopping. There’s a NOS listed on FB Marketplace for four years unsold at $700, but I would think these are in relatively high demand.

I have the chance to buy a barn find CF. It's very dirty but complete. The only real issue is the backglass is broken. I've looked but can't find one for sale anywhere. Anyone know of where I might find one?

#14 1 year ago

With a machine this popular, I personally wouldn’t let a missing backglass stop me from obtaining the pin, one’s bound to come up.

I see them used posted for sale a couple times a year.

I assume you’ve tried the usual commercial sources, but I see it at Shay’s (Add To Cart), and you should always contact coos.net directly to inquire.

Thanks guys. What do you think is a fair price for this one? It belongs to a non-pinball friend’s parents. It’s complete. All they can remember is it quit working and ended up getting put in the barn.

I wouldn't pay more than $400 for that, personally. It needs everything a normal EM will and then some.

This would be my first EM. I seem to come across these hard luck cases. Maybe one day I'll get a restoration that just needs a little cosmetic help.

#19 1 year ago

They should give YOU $400 to take it .............

#20 1 year ago

I think @ RC nailed it at $400. I would expect this could fetch a little more on the open market but I would feel good and honest offering them $400 as it sits.

I did about an hour ago. I'll let you know if I join the club later today.

there's one that pops up on Facebook marketplace for sale in Staten Island NY. they're asking 600 which is ridiculous, but it looks to be in great shape. Maybe you can talk them down to something more realistic. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/590785259560818/?ref=search&referral_code=null&referral_story_type=post&tracking=browse_serp%3Af986e787-7854-4e55-83f7-cb60a6ed028c

I'm going to jump on one from Shay's as soon as I find out if they are going to sell. They had a family emergency come up so hopefully next week we close the deal.
