I can see them going from black (like there is nothing there) to a lit color, but starting at white doesn't make sense to me...

Suggestion: you don't want it that close to the cabinet: scrapes, sideart, mirror blades, rail lighting would all become an issue. It should go no closer than the playfield side rails.
