I've never had a filet of fish before.
Because of this thread, I almost broke down and got one when I was running errands today. But I didn't get one ....cos if I did, pinside would win.

    Damn you Pinside!!

Looks like he went on a fishing expedition and brought home some chicken sauce.

    #107 3 years ago

I don’t even know what chicken sauce is.

    #108 3 years ago

Don't have it here either, but i can imagine.

It was pretty good. It was a little on the salty side....but it's was better than what I was expecting. The steamed bun was a nice touch too. I don't like tartar sauce so I substituted it with mayonnaise. (aka Chicken sauce) I could see myself ordering another at some point.

Damn you Pinside....you win this round.

    #110 3 years ago

Yuck! I will not eat anything with mayo.

    #111 3 years ago

I imagined wrong, mayo eh? Isn't tartare sauce just mayo with a bit of gherkin and some capers?

    #112 3 years ago
    Quoted from Electrocute:

Must be a french thing. I put it on my hotdogs and hamburgers with ketchup.

Goes great with freedom fries too

Count me in on this club.
    I have a filet o fish about 2 times a year.
    I do enjoy them.

    Pretty much, yes.

    Quoted from RCA1:

    Pretty much, yes.

yeah, i've made it many, many times. Was just wondering how some one can not like tartare but like mayo. Must be an aversion to the pickle.

    That’s what she said.

    Quoted from RWH:

I love Micky D's fillet o fish. The best cod sandwich around here (all year long) is at Frisch's, they are good and their tartar sauce is killer.

No way, Izzy's cod sandwich smacks any competition off the plate. If that doesn't convince you the potatoe pancake will.

    #121 3 years ago

My dad worked for a short time at McD's in the early 60's. He told me back then the fish sandwiches were made by hand. Whole fish came off trucks and they would have to skin and debone them before frying.

    #122 3 years ago

l love me a filet o fish too.

    #123 3 years ago
    Quoted from Puffdanny:

Have you ever had a Filet o fish on weed?

Have you ever had one not on weed? I wonder what that’s like...

    Quoted from Pinstein:

Fish Friday Everyone! I was wondering if MickeyD ever had a fish character like the hamburgler or grimmace. Turns out I guess they did for an ad or two. Meet "Phil A. O'fish."

    Captain Crook

Pretty sure we had a Captain Crook glass (along with Grimace and Ronald)

Well played putting his head on a pike though... don’t want him stealing your fish sandwiches!

    #126 3 years ago

Jack in The Box had some similar characters way back if I remember correctly.

And now I am craving a Moby Jack.

Gotta say those Burger King fish sandwiches a few days ago were terrible.

    Quoted from Murphdom:

On the topic of McDonald’s has anyone ever had their pizza? Apparently it was an item on the menu in the 80’s and early 90’s which I don’t remember. There are still 4 locations that still serve it. Two in Ohio, one in West Virginia and one in Florida.

    Best hangover food ever.

    #128 3 years ago

If you disqualify the 2 am Donner Kebab. It's been known to prevent hangovers if enough chili sauce is added.

    #129 3 years ago

I want that as my Fish Tales topper!

    #130 3 years ago

The other day, I had a “wish” sandwich.

Next time SUB sesame bun and you’ll have the perfect sandwich. Sometimes I’ll SUB Big Mac sauce but I prefer mayo.

By the way, finally got around to trying KwikTrip’s fish sandwich: it was great and obviously a tribute to the OG f-o-f (had the one slice of cheese melted on it).

Could’ve used more tartar sauce for my taste, but will definitely get it again.

A Commercial Fisherman told me Monkfish is used for Fillet of Fish since they run out of everything else.
Look up a photo of a Monkfish. Yum!

    #136 3 years ago

They now exclusively use Alaskan pollock, so no.

That’s not to say I won’t eat monkfish... not really particular about how weird a fish looks before I would eat it I guess.

    Cheese on the bottom!

    #140 2 years ago

Thanks. Not really a cheese guy, but i can eat it if it's cooked or melted.

Might try steaming the buns with the cheese on them?

Of course, but I've never steamed a bun before, dunno whether to use a lid or not. Want soft buns, not soggy ones and thought someone may have a tip or two.

    #143 2 years ago

Shit I’m back here again .Now I’m thinking about taking the ride .Buns have to be right .I like coming home with them after a KFC night and tossing a spoonful of cole slaw on that beauty .

    A delicious plan.

Having made 1K+ filet of fish sandwiches in the 70's and early 80's working at McDonald's I can say they suck now compared to then. I made so many I still remember they were boxed 3 rows of 15 "slabs" for 45 per box. They had to have a dedicated deep fryer because the pies will smell of fish if dropped in the same vat. Back then every product was fried in beef fat, what they called "shortening". The real FOF was "North Atlantic white cod". Now they taste like crap, Monkfish? I'll never order another.

    #146 2 years ago

Oh and in 1978 they were 65 cents and by 1985 up to 99 cents. Now almost $5.

    Quoted from tomdrum:

Alaska Pollock, and they are perfection… you shut your dirty mouth.

    #148 2 years ago

Had two with fries on them and a choc shake to sip at the same time last week. That's why i wanted to make some, McD's is 20 mins away and i only go in there once or twice a year if i'm on a trip.

    Always get the same thing;
Two fillet's, large fries, small shake. Dip the frys in the shake too.

    Quoted from skink91:

LOL. They taste like fish paste now inside breading. Sorry if you never had the real FOF but they still suck now. I used to make the double FOF at lunch, 2 patties, 3 half slices of cheese plus the tarter sauce top and bottom on a 3 piece toasted Big Mac bun. Now that was good.

    #150 2 years ago

Just had 2 yesterday and they were flaky and heavenly.
