Hi guys, I'm in the middle of restoring a Gottlieb Top Score and have ordered new door hardware from Steve. In anticipation of its arrival, I'd like to figure out what to do to get this fixed: The previous owner had it configured so that to start a game, rather than pressing the start button (which does nothing), you press in the left coin-return button. Hadn't seen that before.

I can post pictures later today, but am curious what I need to do to get the start button to activate the game, not the coin-return button. The wiring looks like it's still intact going to the start button. How was this bypassed and what would I do to revert?

Thanks as always!

Ok will do — might be a week or so until I can, but I’ll report back.

Quoted from Runbikeskilee:

Question: Did a prior owner remount the coin switch in a different position so that it is pressed down by the action of the horizontal part of the coin return lever mechanism and then configure the machine settings for that slot to start on coin drop? Maybe something similar to the photo shown below?
If such a mod has been implemented, you might want to return the coin switch to it's original position from the factory before working on the coin button.

Here's a video I sent to my friend Mike seeking his input. I believe the coin switch is in the right place -- just not sure yet why IT (and not the replay button) is what's starting a free game. I am going to try to diagnose the circuit per Howard's instructions once I get the game back together (it's taken apart right now, per my post in the "Show us Your EM Pinball Machines" thread).
