Kind of off topic for video games, but not. I'm trying to recreate a Nuka Cola vending machine looking fridge, for the gameroom. From the popular video game series, Fallout. Which depicts the idea of the future from the 1950's becoming reality, and then what it would look like after a nuclear war. So I thought it would be fun to make the gameroom drink fridge look like one of the nuka cola vending machines. Which doesn't fit my pirate ship themed gameroom, but it's also hidden behind a moving wall, until the fridge is needed. I'm almost done with this project, as i'm working on the final touchups of it at this point. but here is the progress so far. So I started off with a new 50's looking fridge. The dimensions of the fridge are not the same specs as the nuka cola vending machines. Plus it has 2 doors, so it's not going to be an exact reproduction, but going to have the look and feel from the game. Here is a pic from the video game machine.

so to start. I had to find bottles I can use to reproduce the nuka cola bottles. Which have a tear drop shape to them with rocket fins. shown here in the video game clip with bottles. Went foraging through various junk piles I had, and friends had to find parts to use for this project. Which ironically is what you do in the game as well to build things.

so while i'm waiting for my casting material to show up for making the bottle fins. I worked on the art for the fridge and bottles. The quantum version of the drink glows, so i'm making the quantum version light up.

next the coin box has been made, altered and painted. The rust on the pan I used, really helped with the natural look. then test fitted it with tape to check overall look

Very cool. I love fallout. I’ve got the same fridge too.

So tried many options for the drink holding door. Was going to be too difficult to make one from scratch and be able to hold drinks, so searched around for something that would work with rounded corners. Modified, painted and used plexi as a glass window. Added hinges so it opens and magnetic locks.

so , now i'm doing the rusty detail work. Making it look like it's been sitting outside for awhile. Take some of the sheen off. add airbrush rust and thick rough rust details. Along with lettering highlights to make the letters appear raised. Still working on more detail and making the top section with the monitor in it. My mold making materials showed up, so I cast some fins. These came out not crystal clear, so I'm trying different resins and types to get the look I want. These hazy ones will be perfect for the open rougher bottle I made that will remain empty.

Nice work. Looks rad.

i'm thinking on adding a pinball micro switch to my light up bottle, and (topper will light as well) and have them only go on, when the sliding wall moves open. I believe a micro switch can be wired to turn on, when closed or turn on when open? Thoughts?

#10 3 years ago

That looks great already. Well done definitely following

#11 3 years ago

still working on the top section. I have the overall shape going on, but having problems painting it so it doesn't melt the foam.

#12 3 years ago

Neat idea, I look forward to seeing how it turns out!

topper done and lights up.

topper has been added to the top. Wired it up so that when the rolling hidden wall is closed, the topper and bottle turn off. Only come on when the wall is opened to reveal the unit. Now the only thing left to do is secure the topper, and paint the rust transition to the fridge. Add rocket fins to the 2 other bottles, and clean up the wiring for the door switch. As I didn't know how much wire I was going to need, so there is a lot of extra.

Very cool project. I really enjoyed Fallout 4

I've been enjoying fallout 4 for the past 2 weeks. First and only fallout game i've ever played. but i've seen pictures of it for years, and everytime I saw the nuka cola machines, I thought it would be cool to make a refrigerator look like one, just for something with some spice.

Whatever you do stay away from Fallout 76. New Vegas is the best one if you want to play more unless you like more traditional RPGs then the first two are good.

I have friends that play fallout 76. For the longest time the game was complete garbage. But just last week, they released a complete overhaul of the game. It's not even the same game anymore (is what they all said). Greatly improved and actually playable now. That's what they tell me anyway. I'm content with fallout 4 as of right now.

machine is almost done. making the fins for the 2nd bottle now. Then one more set and it's complete.

Neo...this is truly one of the coolest projects I've ever seen. I wish I had one! (Or at least the talent to make one.)

Fallout 3 was my favorite...I just lost myself in that game, and one day, home on break from work, it literally almost got me fired because I forgot to go back to work. Thank God my wife called to ask where I was.

Jump forward a couple years. My wife and I are walking through the Washington DC Metro station (forgot which one...Dupont Circle, maybe?). I'm looking around, and I tell my wife it's the weirdest thing: I feel like I've been there before, but I know I couldn't have. Suddenly, it comes to me: I walked through that station playing Fallout 3...THAT'S how realistic that game is.

As soon as I tell my wife this, she rolls her eyes and says, "You are SUCH a fucking nerd."

Nerds FTW! I could build you one. It was a huge project, but I could do it again. Especially if you had any of the games on my wishlist that I was after.

Awesome project, never played the game but your fridge looks fantastic! Really creative with the stuff you used to get the look and feel of the machine from the game.
Hats off to you sir.

#23 3 years ago

Thank you. I did scrap and search for the parts. Only thing that wasn't a junk piece, was the fridge itself. The bottles were new when I bought the drink that was in them.

#24 3 years ago

Here are the final pics. Finished the last bottle last night. All bottles are done. Wiring is all cleaned up and looking good. It's all done now. Turned out good.

And I found out last night from playing fallout 4, that the screen shot I used for the monitor, actually is suppose to be the video on the display. In the game, all of the machines are broken or damaged from the nuclear blasts. SO I never knew what was suppose to play on the monitor. So I wanted either , nuka cola logo with a bottle, in 50's B/W style. Or bottle and cappy doing some promotional looking thing in b/w. then playing the game last night. I reached the nuka cola bottling factory, and low and behold.....there was a working machine with fully working monitor. And the video of the still shot I used. what luck.

Killer project - great work! The Quantum bottle lit up really sets it off. Outstanding! Fallout 3 was my favorite of the series as well. I eventually had to just quit the game cold turkey because it was all I was doing in my free time.

#26 3 years ago

After playing Fallout more hours than I would like to admixture........All I can say is I love this project! Thanks for sharing!

#27 3 years ago

I did a video walkthrough of my gameroom, and included the nuka cola machine at the end.
