There was a line of discussion recently brought up in the thread, "Poll: Hottest Girls in Pinball (fun topic)" about topics that are (to avoid judgmental adjectives) NSFW.
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/poll-hottest-girls-in-pinball-fun-topic/page/9
Thoughtful pinsider, bkerins, had what I thought was a pretty reasonable suggestion:
"I know that I can "drain" a topic, but that doesn't change its visibility to others. In my opinion, topics with "adult" content should not be visible as part of the main forum.
When topics that frequently includes nudity and misogyny are repeatedly visible on the top page, it gives the public impression that nudity and misogyny is tolerated or encouraged.
...
Topics with adult content, including this one, should be in a sub-forum that is not visible to the general site visitor."
With Pinside increasingly becoming the public face of pinball, all of us trying to foster greater diversity in pinball, yet at the same time not encouraging censorship, this suggestion seems to be a happy medium.
I can see this being a tightrope straddle between censorship and encouraging an inclusive community, in addition to giving the already-overworked moderators another task, but I thought it warranted discussion, if nothing else.
I'll be interested to hear opinions from other pinsiders.
Sincerely,
Ryan Claytor
