Here's some of the types of things Ron is able to fix. Stuff that shouldn't be an issue, but... cracks around a ton of inserts

Since this has become my little personal web page I have to share why I have a really old beat up not smart phone.
At the beginning of the month the kid across the street sold me his brand new beautiful smart phone, because he wanted one with a bigger battery, whatever. so I finally get a smart phone that takes better pics than a 900 dollar nikon SLR. so I took the original before pics with the new phone.
so a couple weeks ago I get a phone call from my ex wife and it didnt go too good. some guys used to punch walls when they were young and stupid, I used to smash phones. I havent done it in 20 years. Without thinking I threw the phone as hard as I could, but of course i didnt break just the phone. God hates me and made it go thru a double pane anderson window wall. My sim card survived! so I got to keep the phone numbers, so I got that goin for me.

Ron is a playfield specialist not a high end pin restorer he is only providing a piece to the puzzle which happens to be one of the most important pieces for restoring a pin
You can find cheaper replacements but you get what you pay for Ron's quality is top notch and hard to come by in any hobby
So if you buy a project machine and think Ron's got a nice playfield for cheap that he's put more hours in on then what he can truly be paid fairly for and say well that's more than I paid for the machine he gets a little tired of hearing that but more than likely if your a collector he'll work with you the best he can as he is a collector himself and is always looking out for his reputation as he not just flipping playfields he's creating masterpieces so pins can live again with playfields that are better than when the pin originally came outta the box

"But that's more than I paid for the whole machine". Bahaha, that's a classic but I'm sure used all the time. Makes you want to ask, "if you see reproduction playfields for $600-$900, what were you expecting to pay for a NOS that's been cared for decades, then brought into a shop to fix art work and clear?"

    #58 6 years ago

I had Ron work his magic on an NOS Monster Bash playfield I had to go into a full restoration and it turned out so well it was almost a crime to play the game. I've also bought PFs he's had and been very happy.

Ron is a straight shooter that does awesome work that most people can't even dream of doing. If you don't think what he charges is worth the price, then, respectfully, you are clueless.

    #59 6 years ago

Bud brought up the value of a nos pf compared to a reproduction. Thank god for reproductions, because if they were not made, the nos pf's would be pretty much used up on most titles. I would always prefer a nos pf because the wood is harder, it keeps the integrity of the game, and it is a rewarding challenge to find one it may take years. I have many friends who have been looking for a nos title for years, or a used one that can be restored. spirit, PotO, spectrum., many more.
sometimes both nos and repros are available, and there are times I personally would go with a repro, because it is so much work to get the nos planks up to par. I am mostly talking about the bally's from the 70's. It would be great if they ever make paragon. I have owned over a dozen nos planks and they are out there, but it cost so much money to get all of those inserts right, and clearcoat it, and touch up, most have cracking issues.
you can have 2 nos paragon pf's and one is in amazing condition, the inserts are level, and not loose and cracked around them, it was screened really well in the first place, and then another nos paragon, where there are big areas of cracked paint from the wood grain expanding, insert nightmares, scratches, and unaligned art screens. when people sell them generally they would sell for within 200 bucks of each other, when the cost to clear and get them ready for installation could be 700 bucks difference!!!!!
Most of the 1970's ballys have thin key lines around the inserts, and if the screens are off and the insert is placed outside the keyline, and then you get the crack around the edge of the insert, you now have a crack outside the insert area and key line, out in the art work. This sucks because, I can either make the keyline (black outline of the insert) thicker but then I have to make all of them in that area thicker. On some pf's the insert is so far outside the keyline, there is nothing I can do except start painting the colors in the body of the pf it touches and or effects. this happens on some repros also. I cant say names because I dont want to get attacked again.

something you want to look at when buying a pf. On the new reproductions you will have a crescent moon next to the insert. it is usually wood. I own 2 BK repros that I thought I could thicken the key line because the inserts had the crescent moon, but it was just too big and they look dumb. so those pf's went in to the boat pile (I want to build a boat of pf's)

I paid 1100 shipped for a cpr playboy because it is a really nice one. That whole run came out really nice for the most part, but they all got installed and I couldnt find one for a year, so I paid the kings ransom, because all I have to do is my clear procedure.

I just wanted to point out some things to think about when deciding on weather to use nos or repro, and what to look for and the costs involved. I didnt mention that I will not, and never have cleared a pf without making it something to be proud of. so if a pf has issues, I will not just clear it for you. we have to make it right first. Of course I am not going to insist on going bonkers. often when a nos pf needs work, we can discuss what is the most ugly flaws and what remedies are the most bang for the buck, and then come up with a budget like 200-300. 99% of the time, thats all it takes to make it very acceptable. One very big thing to note, is I believe it is very important to sand off clear that is old, or un even, and the high points are always around the inserts. So often a pf looks very diffrent after prep work. several clients have thought I mixed up their pf with another, because they thought " it just needs a little touch up"
On reproductions, when I sand off 90-95% of the clear, they are level enough that I dont get in to any paint, but very often they will have inserts with hairline cracks around them. those look horrible and have to be painted. Especially if it is just a black key line, but we are talking from less than an hour to 2 hours, compared to a nos where it could be every single insert.
if you ever have any questions when you are looking at or buying a pf that you plan to send to me, feel free to drop me a line and ask a question, since every title is different than other titles, but most of the time, most of the pf's of the same title have the same issues.

Little food for thought on the never ending debate of nos or reproduction.

Thanks for all of the support. If you think I am becoming a know it all, please let me know... privately, and I will keep the posts chilled back.

I need to make a drill and dimple template for twilight zone, and there is always one in the studio, either one of mine or a customers, but not right now.
If anyone wants to get their TZ pf cleared, and it is dimpled, I will take 75 dollars off the cost. something to think about if you are planning to restore a tz in the future.
It dosent scratch or effect your pf at all to be a donar for a template. I clamp a 3/8 sheet of levon on it, with pads so the plexi does not touch the finish, and I mark the spots, then remove it and drill it out.

    Thanks for the support

    #65 6 years ago

I could send you a pretty nice original TZ (used but good shape)

    #66 6 years ago

I would love to see a video of how you dimple and then drill a NOS playfield starting with the making of the template from a dimpled playfield. Probably not very exciting but very informative.

    #67 6 years ago

    Ron,
I have a question that I was curious about. If I wanted to send you a playfield that still has Mylar installed, do I remove or do you remove? If I remove Mylar then there may be a lot of paint loss that could cause more work for you. Just curious how you handle this. Thanks

    #68 6 years ago

A great question about removing mylar before sending. Always let the pro deal with it. I have done it for so long I can remove a bunch of mylar and the glue in less than an hour and do no damage. If you do it there is a great chance you will damage an insert and cause a lot of work for the restorer, and cost for you.

I have a Stargate that I'd like to get de-mylared and cleared, but I've heard alot of people won't work on them. Is that something you could take a look at @kruzman?

    #78 6 years ago

Hi Ron, when I got my new BoP repro last year it was perfect, when I pulled it out of the box a few days ago almost all the inserts had sunken clear around them. I need your help.

    #79 6 years ago

I just got done cleaning the compound out of the cut outs of a BoP repro that had the same issue. I cleared it allowing 2 weeks between sets of 2 coats, then before I block sanded it I waited 4 weeks. The clear had settled a little bit in the inserts. Thats the reason it takes me so long, because I hate that effect, and it is going to cause wear eventually. some repros continue to get the lines around the inserts even after I cleared them. It seems like cpr has improved their process in the last release or 2 that I have done. These pics are after running a rag thru all of the holes. I still have to wipe the pf clean and then polish one more time, then apply a wax. I just took th epics to show what it looks like after waiting the time before sanding it level.

Thanks Ron. CPR didn't do BoP Peter in Germany did. Do you know what clear he used? Would you use an eye dropper to fill those low spots around the inserts first? Here's a couple shots of mine. A CSI playfield I have was recleared about 10 years ago and is still as smooth as a piece of glass, it's perfect, I wonder if you did it. I would LOVE to have my BoP look like that.

Hi paul, I am aware of the german fella who does the pf's bop, f14, and one other. Anyway. I was mentioning the other maker of pf;s because the run of FT that produced the 9 pf's I did for customers had that effect really bad. I wait at least 4 months now before i clear a reproduction pf. I honestly dont know if it is the clear or the wood, or the inserts, but it dosent happen on nos pf's, and it is a big part of the reason why I spread out my process twice as long now.

as for the question, which is a good question, but if you eye drop clear on that you are just going to make a mess. sorry for the bad news.

I have a cpr CENTAUR cleared and ready to sell. On the centaurs I go thru and tighten up the arrow inserts, as well as any of the round inserts that may have little gaps on the line between the plastic and the wood. I love how nice they look with a perfect flat clear.
I have allready block sanded it, and I just have to polish it, clean the edges of the cut outs of compound, and then wax.
If you have any interest or questions, please contact me..
    thank you rk

The pfs I was selling for a friend who's priorities changed are no longer on the market. so that means the:
nos monsterbash (that was a huge mistake not to buy)
    nos Funhouse clearcoated
cpr bally star trek pf cleared with back glass and plastics

ALSO: I would like to buy a couple new nos pf's. So now if the time to think about if you want to sell one of the pf's you know you will never get to, or has been hanging on the wall for years. (I have plenty of used pf's I can sell or trade ya for art)
    So pm me

    #86 6 years ago

    Hey Ron,
I'm just curious if you ever got that Spirit playfield core that was promised to you after you restored the other one that the guy sent to you. I'd be interested in it for my game but I know it's been like 2-3 years hasn't it? What's the story on it ?

    John

    #87 6 years ago

Is that the BOP playfield I sold you? Are you around this weekend I want to check it out?

    #88 6 years ago

Boy that Spirit pf really binds my panties. No I have not heard for the fellow pin head. I shot him a mail about 3 months back when he put a spirit pf up for sale, and I asked what about me. NO reply. Thats some dirty pool. oh I am sure he sold the pf for a real pretty penny also. some peoples own name reputation and word mean nothing. Just money. Even when they have plenty, could always use more. I am getting pretty bitter because of stuff like that deal. he is one of 3 people who promised me the core pf. one person I even took the price off my invoice, and never got it.
So now when I work with new people they think I am a butt hole, but it is just because I have been burned real proper.

If I am not mistaken I believe he mentioned to you also that he would hook you up with it> I still have the pics of the pf I restored for him. I hope his daughter gets herpies.

    Ron,

First, let me start out by saying this is my first time pre-drilling holes on a restored playfield. As you know, I bought your dremmel and glue kit last week to pre-drill my Indiana Jones playfield. At first, I must admit, I was a little apprehensive about using my dremmel tool (even at low speed) on my freshly restored playfield. I tried hand twisting brand new brad drill bits first. I got so so results. The wings of the brad drill bit cut a nice circle around the top of the hole but didn't really remove any clear, at least for me. Also, if you are not careful, you can easily cut into the wood once you get past the clear.

So last night I finally decided to use your dremmel kit to compare the results. All I can say is WOW!!!! The dremmel bits made pre-drilling the holes so easy and so stress free! I got super clean circles with your dremmel bits to ensure the corresponding screws don't touch any clear when installed. I decided to use the brad drill bits to drill out clear from inside the holes only. But as far as removing clear from the top of the hole to prevent the screws from catching the clear when installed, your dremmel kit is just what the doctor ordered! Thanks Ron!

You won't be disappointed! The kit makes it so much easier

    #93 6 years ago

Concerning the dremmil kit, that exactly what I wanted to hear. The last thing I want to do after charging someone 575 to do my work on their pf, is look like I am trying to nickel dime them in to buying more swag. I wouldnt do a swap without both kits. Not only that, it makes me relax and enjoy the process more, rather than being so anxious that I am going to make a costly mistake. Also, I think it will add to the long term success of the pf. Like I have said before. The last thing you want is to pull out a post 10 years after you install one of my pf's, and the wood swollen up and pulling so hard on the post pulls up or cracks or chips (damages) the pf. Not to mention things like the trap door on the centaur pf, nail screws for pop bumpers, the swamp on monster bash. The dremmil kit has bits for those applications.

Naptha cleans out the hypodermic needles, and if I didnt send a stone with your dremmil kit, and your bit gets clogged with melted clear, run it on the side of the wheel on your bench grinder. it wont remove the diamonds, and it will clean out the melted clear.

I have decided to add a tool to the diamond dremmil bit kit,
So Now the kit includes at least 8 diamond bits of diffrent shapes and sizes I picked out for different applications. Also a piece of stainless with 29 holes to have handy to measure screws and drill bits. I found to be helpfull to save time and avoid mistakes. I can measure a screw and see what drill bit is one size smaller, and measure it to make sure I have the right one.
I also always throw in a couple of whatever's I have available. almost always a stone to clean your diamond bits on but you can also use them on the side of your bench grinder wheel. The clear sometimes melts on the bit. the diamonds are stronger than the stone of the grinder wheel. I also bought a couple hundred dremmil drill bits of the often used sizes. I found that drilling with the dremmil causes not halo of clear damage at all. Often times I throw in one or 2 diamond dremmil bits that are an odd size that I bought some to try. You never know, except for sure 8 diamond bits and the measuring tool. The price now is $50.

Just wondering if you could give a brief run down on play field preparation?. I'm going to be doing a BOP PF swap very soon so i'm just unsure about the idea of "Dimpling" and about pre drilling all screw holes, etc. This will be my first PF swap so i'm a shamefaced Newbie when it comes to this, any advice will be greatly appreciated!

I am very good at what I do which is restore and clear pf's. I have done them for a living for 13 years now. I am not a pro at installing them. people like bryan kelly, or clay harrell, chris hutchens, those are the guys you want to talk to. My experience installing pf's is only 11 swaps now. The only thing I will explain is that doing a pf swap is the equivalent of swapping out a motor in a car which I have done close to the same amount as pf's. Its a very big complicated job that should not be underestimated.

    Quoted from kruzman:

Hi paul, I am aware of the german fella who does the pf's bop, f14, and one other.

It sounds a little negative. Does he not do a good job?
