NOS Swords of Fury playfield [prototype]

Added: 2018-10-26 22:00:00 UTC • Re-listed: 1 time (March 5th, 2019) • Ended: April 23rd, 2019
Condition: New (selling multiple, business)

Price

$ 700 (Firm)

Price is firm

I'm selling an extremely rare Swords of Fury NOS playfield that I've had for several years.
I believe this was a factory second as it has a few minor flaws/blemishes and so was never dimpled, drilled for posts or used in a game.

General condition is very good. A perfect candidate for some minor touchup and clearcoat for any high end SoF restoration.

I notice some superficial scratching or scrapes (mostly in areas of black), a couple of slightly raised inserts and one or two small chips. Please review photos closely.

Asking $700 USD and buyer pays shipping which I can quote upon request.

Thank you for looking.

Sorry... I should have clarified.
I don't have the upper playfield. This listing is just for the main one.

Quoted from Gornkleschnitzer:

This looks like a prototype! I see a number of art differences - and implied game rule differences - with the production version.

Cool.
That would make sense as to why it wasn't used. I suppose they only built so many prototypes and test machines... but they must have ordered a few playfields.

I'll update the title.
Thanks!

Quoted from Gornkleschnitzer:

The blank orange lights under the "SHIELD" text - and the shield spinners - piqued my curiosity. What were they planning? Spinners "charge" a magic shield payoff award? Enough spins relight the kickback?
If I didn't have so many projects going on already, I'd buy it and build the alternate-universe version of SoF.

I think it's just a different terminology. Those 5 square orange inserts in the middle (on a production machine) show the value that you get for completing the MAGIC targets on the upper playfield. If your ball falls off the upper playfield without completing the targets, one of those inserts usually shuts off and you start losing value. So, the general srategy is to max out the upper playfield value (light all 5 inserts) before sending the ball back up to the top and completing the drops. The only way to do this is to hit the spinners. Each good hit lights another of those 5 inserts.

Even though the terminology is a bit different, this playfield still shows that relationshsip between the 'Magic Shield' spinners and increasing the 'Shield' value (or upper playfield completion value).

I suspect that the possible confusion with the 'shield' kickback is precisely why they changed the copy a bit.

I'm curious if anyone out there has a working prototype or sample SoF? I'd love some confirmation

Quoted from TecumsehPlissken:

interestingly on IPDB there are 3 pictures there that are titled "Prototype playfield" but the playfield in those pics. looks more like a production playfield & it does not say "magic shield" like yours does

Wow. I suppose I'd better get some better photos and maybe a scan of this thing for posterity and send it over to them.

Still, I have no use for it unless as a wall hanger, so if anyone wants a rare and unusual piece of SoF lore to make a one of a kind machine... let me know
