In the head of the machine there is a stepper unit that moves the credit wheel. The typical way the machine is set to free play is to set the credits to 0 which will open two switches on the stack, you would close the one closest to the backglass by bending it or using a jumper. If this is how the machine was set to free play, remove the jumper or bend the switch to be open at 0 credits. When the stepper advances to show 1 or more credits then it will be closed.

You will also want to examine the coin mechs on the coin door to ensure they are correctly adjusted and wired. Some people disable them (or they're broken) when setting it to free play. In particular the coil on the coin door which prevents you from adding credits when the machine has max credits or is turned off.
