It would be nice if we had a single resource that could update basic needs for our community. Perhaps someone with web space/server that could make weekly updates to basic info such as:

    * Board Repair experts
    * Clear-coats (who can do them)
    * Who is open to trading machines (posting which machines are in rotation in your collection)
    * A list of REAL Wishlist machines that people are ready to buy so we can help each other score machines, when the machine is a little too far away to drive out and kick the tires. If I knew that 72Devils up in Sonora wanted a Flash really bad, and one was <30 minutes away from me, I wouldn't mind scouting the pin for him so he wouldn't waste his time on a 4 hour drive down.
    * A list of all pin leagues
    * A list of Interested people open to opening a league in a certain zipcode where there isn't one...

I don't think we need a Facebook group for this. I don't need daily updates on that kind of stuff. But knowing that it's updated weekly by someone in this group would make the information more relevant. And it wouldn't be easy to update here, unless Steve wanted to make ANOTHER thread, and kill this one, and then RESERVE the first 10 posts for this kind of info, and just be the moderator for all of it...

So I'd like to be able to find all that information right now (above) in one place, and be more helpful and networked. Anyone care to volunteer moderating a web page for this? Or perhaps we jumpstart a new thread and RESERVE 10 posts at the top just dedicated to NorCal resources/interests?

    Ideas?

I realize NoCal is a BIG place, and you have to have 8+ sections to cover different regions for this kind of stuff.

Anyone know who brought the lovely Sorcerer to PAGG? I only got to play it 2-3x and was interested in it...

The two games I play most in my collection right now are Space Shuttle and Black Knight... Trying to discover what that next Early Solid State pin is to hunt for...

    Sorcerer might be it...

    thanks,

John in Oakland is offering a nice Firepower for $4900... Really?

Can't imagine who he thinks his target audience includes. I am having trouble imagining the set of people that will spend $4900 on a machine that normally sells for ~$800. 6-to-1 normal price. I happen to think 2-to-1 is about the max you can "ask" for an old machine in amazing condition ($3,000 for a $1,500 machine for example), but I would guess that it's more like 3-to-2 that people will actually pay (a 50% premium max?). I might pay $2250 for a $1500 machine in amazing shape, but not much more...

Yes, I just watched a few of his videos, and he's done some great work on restoring the bodies and polishing the chrome on a few machines. His work looks good, and he claims to replace every last part on his machines. I can understand him restoring a Diner and an Evel Knievel, in terms of title choice -- I can imagine high-end buyers for those titles -- but for Firepower???

He's extremely smooth on the sales side. Reminds me of listening to the shopping channel back in the 1990s... I think he says super, sweet, cool, look, incredible, uh-huh, and new, at least 15 times in each video. Look at how super sweet and cool that is -- incredible! It almost sounds like someone looking at porn. He's good at pitching on video, that's for sure.

    Quoted from SKILL_SHOT:

he wanted $1100-1200 for BLACK PYRAMID he still hasnt sold it and is down to $850 obo.

It's funny there are two pins that seem to never sell in CL:

    Black Pyramid
    Nightmare on Elm Street

I've seen ads for two of each for at least 2 months, really sad to watch them sit up there on CL forever -- so unwanted.

    SORCERER!

After 4 weeks of being "done" buying up pins, my doctor says I officially have the sickness again, and I am now in the market for a Sorcerer. I have no f****g idea where I'll put it. I'll have to figure that out later.

    1) Anyone know anyone with a Sorcerer?
    2) Anyone know who brought that Sorcerer to Pagg, and was it for sale?

    thanks!

    Hello!

I've been advised to have board work done on my project 1985 Williams Sorcerer.
Are there any amazing board work guys in Norcal?

I apparently have a non-pulsed column driver on 1J8-6. Symptom: When in switch mode, jumping 1J8-row-6 (such as the right flipper) with anything on 1J10 causes all 8 numbers to appear sequentially in descending order (44,36,28,20,12,4,etc)...

Anyone in Nor Cal thinking of selling a System 11 this summer?

I was thinking of selling my Grand Lizard but I see you have one already I do have a Big Guns but Im still attached to it, it's my first.

Agreed. My GL was a project, and I sank some $ into it to get it up to par. Now it plays REALLY well, and I have come to love that game, don't think I could part with it either.

    Quoted from Spybryon:

I like Pin*Bot but I actually prefer Jackbot. If you haven't played Jackbot I suggest you try to play one before buying a Pin*Bot.

I think I played a JackBot at PAGG and was impressed by it, but I tend to focus on titles from the 1980's only. I really like keeping to that theme.

    -mof

Now it's priced at $2400. Perhaps I wasn't crazy thinking the market for this pin in cherry condition might only get action under ~$2000.
How much would you spend on a near-PERFECT Firepower? And if you had that amount free today to spend on a game, is Firepower really the one you'd get? That's my issue. If I had $2400 free to spend today on a game, I'd much rather pick up a $2400 game like... a nice Centaur.

What I'm trying to say is, (I'm speculating here, so give me a break, ok?) -- I'd ONLY do a AAA (200+ hours) restore of a non-top-25? or so title unless I had a buyer asking for it. Just saying. I'd get paid more, I'd get an amount up front... I would do an 'A' restore of it <40 hours and flip it for ~$1500, and move along to a title I could be SURE I'd have 10 buyers fighting for it.

No harm in trying, I'm glad he's going for it, but I just think he's aiming at 1% of a 1% target... =)

    Thoughts?

    Quoted from IdahoRealtor:

These days, nearly every pin on CL is overpriced. You'll never know all the sellers. Knowing the values is only way to protect yourself.
Regarding flippers, constant flipper bashing is simply hating on profits. There's nothing wrong with profit. No profit = no economy = no jobs. Business people understand this.
    Here's some food for thought-
Are real estate flippers scum too? How dare they buy up all the neglected homes in the neighborhood, shine them up, sell them for a profit, and help boost the neighbors' home values! The nerve! They should only be allowed to break even, or sell for a loss, keeping home prices down. Better yet, no investors should be allowed to purchase real estate, only owner-occupants. See where I'm going with this?
We're all just playing our part. And whether you're Joe Flipper or Joe Collector, buying low and selling high isn't wrong. It's smart. I do it as often as I can, and I bet most of the flipper haters do too.

Your points are good, yet to any complex argument there are many points to make. We could start a pro and con list... it would be fun. I'll make one and link it here.

    Quoted from practicalsteve:

If someone can design a simple 3" x 5" id badge that just has the pinside logo spaces for our pinside name and our real name it would be simple (and free) for me to make some super nice laminated id badges we can save and use at PAGG and other events. We can just write our names in with permanent marker.

That's a great idea, make a frickin' badge that is location-independent.

    Proposed Requirements:

    1) It should simply say "Pinside" with some Pinside logo stuff on it, and room for your username.
    2) Leave the image in a sticky thread so others can download it.
    3. Use a badge size that is typical, so if u have other badges laying around from other trade shows you can just make this and print it out and put it in.

Do we have a graphic artist that can pull off the official Pinside Badge?

    Nor Cal !

    I. Toying with a special Friend Agreement for selling/buying back a pin. Wondering your thoughts on this arrangement:

I'd sell chopping block pins to FRIENDS who promise that IF they ever sell, I get shotgun on the buying opportunity. This "seller gets first dibs on buyback" promise allows for two things:

    1) I'm more willing to let a REALLY hard to find pin in my "very good-excellent players" condition pin go (all my pins are this way.)
    2) Buyer gets it for a cheaper price in exchange for the promise, since I have at least the possibility of buying it back at the SAME price in 1-2 years when my friend outgrows it. At minimum I can go play it at my friends house if I ever feel the need.

    Thoughts?

II. Name your current Grail and Chopping Block pin ! I got a friend looking for his first ever pin, in the $1000-$2500 range. Looking for good multiball DMD or Sys11...

    Grail:
    1. Fathom
    2. Black Hole

    Chopping Block (to friends only):
    1. Cyclone
    2. Taxi

    Quoted from jyfly:

Yes but serious buyers only! Does she seriously think she will have a buyer at 12K? It must be one of those, this is what they go for on Ebay sellers.

To be clear, there's a "buy it now" price, and an "actually sold for X" price on ebay.

You can subscribe to services for a FEE and have access to all ebay records. I do.

Three Indiana Jones sold in the last 90 days for roughly 4.0 4.5 and 5.0 on ebay. $4500 is the average.

These are numbers you are already familiar with. No surprises. The only surprise is that VERY FEW pinball machines actually sell on ebay.

    Here are some interesting stats:

    In the last 90 days:

Roughly 370 pinball machines sold for >$1000. I searched for the terms "pinball" and "machine" and >$1000.

    Average sale price is ~$3000.

Highest price was MM for $15,000 and King Kong for $15,000

That comes to roughly ~4 sold per day.

The sell-through rate is roughly ~10%. That means 1 in 10 sell. That's a lot of free $$$ going back to Ebay for unsold items.

Average of 1 bid per listing.

    enjoy!

I've actually got my gameroom coming back together, just need to get a few more games working correctly, a playfield swap completed, also a couple of friends games shopped and out of here. Then I was thinking about doing a Pinside open house, I'll update later once I feel more comfortable on a date and time. Anyone interested in playing a bunch of old System 80 games? I know these games aren't everyone's "cup of tea" but I like them, just trying to have something different.
The "up and running" list so far, The Amazing Spiderman, Volcano, Pink Panther, Goin' Nuts, Spirit, Rocky, Black Hole, Mars, God of War, Rack Em Up, Alien Star, Time Line. And the one odd ball, Joust (because there's no good place to store it ... and it's fun) Have to fix Punk, Counterforce, Bounty Hunter, Devil's Dare. I don't know if I have the room for more System 80's at this time but I'll pack more in if I can clear some space.

My best for 6+ months was 8.6, just hit 9.2 the other night, and ya it made me appreciate the game a lot more again. It is a very unforgiving game. I finally got a clue on how to hit Carry Passengers. It's a little bounce on the left flipper before striking it. It's a really important shot to have figured out.

here is what he had pin wise, when I asked about the retirement sale and "making an offer" he replied "well the price is listed on each item..." makes me wonder how willing he is to budge, but i assume if you rolled up in a truck with cash you could give it a shot..
    Funhouse - $4,200
    Fishtales - $2,800
    Airborne - $2,400
    Lethal Weapon 3 - $1,900
    Road Show - $3,200
    Sinbad - $1,400
    Eight Ball - $1,600
I visited this place once randomly a year or two ago and i swear I saw the same fishtales and other pins there, lol. I asked how long his sale was for and he said he didnt know, he was supposed to be out of there 3 months ago, and that he may be there longer, or he may pack it up this weekend and just "move everything to my own gameroom"
    YMMV

I replied to the Elvira CL add before and again today but no response?

While nobody ever "wants" to pay >$2K for any Sys11 in 2014, I will say Elvira seems to be on the "rarer" side of things on CL. If I were hunting for a good one (which I am not) I'd likely move on one below $2000.

I'm on the fence with regards to my TZ but it may be up for sale at PAGG, not sure. Can anyone give me an idea as to a good price range for it. I think mine looks fairly nice and has no playfield wear that I can remember (hasn't been stood up in 2 years, that's guiding my decision too) and it's an unmolested game, that is, no mods or LED's. PM if you'd like to come by and look at it, let's talk. Gotta move some games out of the way to get to it though. TIA,

I know I created a separate thread about this, but I am going to promote it here as well. My friend made a short video a while back of me and my pins and now it looks like its going to be on TV! Granted its a on a really small cable network called Pivot, but it has a fan base and people can buy it on itunes and Amazon. Its a show based on a website called hitrecord that was started by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. They are doing a games episode and I am in the trailer. I am leaving links to the trailer and full video my friend made below. I have no idea how much footage they will use in the actual episode, but its still pretty exciting.

    Quoted from Blairally:

Im also curious how he finds a large enough sucker demographic to sell pins at 2x their value on a consistent basis!

I bought my second pin from Sean back when I was in 'month 2' of the hobby, and I was happy with the transaction. In short, I think people who offer a shopped pin with a warranty are good for getting people into the hobby who don't have time to work on pins (I didn't at the time.) It was an appropriate decision for me, because I kept seeing WW's come and go on CL and I was never first to respond. I wanted to enjoy a solid WW in very good player's condition, and that's what I got. I knew I was paying a little more, but I was also getting a little more than just grabbing a machine off CL in unknown condition. (As a bonus -- when a minor glitch arose months later, he even offered me some support after the warranty period, and that was appreciated.) I was given the impression his focus was on creating another satisfied customer. I actually know another customer who had a similarly generous experience in working with Sean.

Now, as for leaving "sold" items in the marketplace... I agree it would be nice if those didn't linger there (from anyone), since they clutter up our searches.

Frankly, I'm surprised FH took such a steep price climb up in the last year with 10k made. 10k is a lot... T2 is really up there at 15k. I would think prices should jump a lot more on titles in the 5K and under range... (AFM, MM, Centaur, Fathom, etc). I realize scarcity is only one factor to drive prices, but I'd think it's likely to be one of the bigger factors.

    $1.00 = 1 credit

    $2.50 = 4 credits
    $15.00 = 1 hour
I'm interested in feedback (Public or PM) about the interface from people that actually use it. This is a product that's currently in development, so there's still a lot that may change in the future based on user feedback.
And before I get complaints about $1/game, Metallica was $1/game before, and actually got less expensive with the 4 for $2.50 option (previously, 4 games was $3.00).

I don't understand the $15.00 price. Can you say more about what that is aimed at? Is the goal to park a person on 1 machine for 1 hour? Confused.

    Quoted from jfesler:

How many dowels do you typically use? Do you leave the pin on the dowels during transport?

    2.

I think I have 3 for good measure, sometimes one twists out of the way or loses contact. 1 is enough, but I prefer the ease of 2.

I just played another 5 games of KISS tonight at Molotov's in SF.
Had no game resets. All multi-balls played fine for me.
This game will be GREAT for operators.
All the shots are easy-cake. The easiest game to shoot that I've ever played other than perhaps AFM. This will be great for casual players.
As a collector the lack of challenge of the geometry makes this a lackluster title for me, but I realize that "someday" the rules may make the shot timing interesting for KISS fans.

I have the opportunity to pick up a Dr. Dude from a friend for $900. It's in great shape and shows no signs of wear. The only thing wrong with it is one of the displays has gone out. I think this sound like a good deal. I'm an EM collector and restorer. It doesn't seem like it would be to big of a job to replace the display. Or am I wrong? Thoughts and comments are appreciated.
    Thanks

85 people have Dr Dude on their wish list -- just take 10% of that for Cal. You can cater to NorCal and SoCal where you live... so you might have 9-10 potential buyers when it comes time to sell - that's a good situation.

It's really easy, you just break up the machine into four-five components, so that each one is no more than 80 pounds. Now two any-sized/aged people can get this done in a few minutes.

    1. head
    2. playfield
    3. cabinet
    4. legs, bolts, balls, loose things.
    5. glass (optionally out)

    Great news !!!

(I'm not a scientist), but do note that one perk of the design of the FGW space -- is that it has lots of through-breeze as the front side stays open the entire day -- and there's a side door that is frequently open, AND there are tall ceilings, so I mean it's not a tiny closed box at all.
