    Quoted from sosage:

EDIT: I forgot SFPD and BAPA...but I am not really up to date on what they are doing.

SFPD has the Summer of George tournament on June 16 and the fall season of the league begins in mid-july and runs until December. Everybody is welcome. We meet at Free Gold Watch in the Haight. Details at http://sfpins.org/

Chris operates a handful of the games at Free Gold Watch in San Francisco. I can vouch for his big smile and friendly manners

    #299 10 years ago

In case everyone hasn't heard it: There's now a Wizard of Oz on location at Free Gold Watch in San Francisco. It's very pretty

I can make it to three of those five tournaments. So exciting!

Can you actually buy anything for less than that? I thought my place was about as small as place as you can reasonably live in and it was over that. I guess SF is a bit more skewed... But I do have room for a pin in my third-floor walkup - doh!

I'm measuring to see if I can convert a closet into a place for a pinball machine, but I don't think it'll fit. Oh well, at least Free Gold Watch is easy to get to! #SFLife

The map says there's a Shadow at Portal's Tavern near West Portal Station in SF. I can't say I've ever been to that particular location.

    #1188 10 years ago

I hope you all have a great tournament tomorrow!

    A couple things:
Let's call it: Split-Flipper Mixed-Gender Team Tommy Dollars*?
    * Rules:
    - each team is one male and one female

Just a note on the WPPRs. You can't get WPPRs for team tournaments (otherwise a strong player can pull up a poor player). Doesn't mean they are not fun! It's the same reason the East Bay City Rumble tournaments don't give out WPPRs either.

Fun fact: My first pinball tournament was the 2012 East Bay City Rumble.

Free Gold Watch hearing at 5:30pm tomorrow at city hall. Be there and show your support for the best pinball place in San Francisco. Details: http://www.sfgov2.org/index.aspx?page=4282

There were 6-8 of us at the hearing tonight to support Matt (first time I have spoken at a hearing of any kind!). The commissioners were really cool and only had questions about whether or not the games they remember from the 70s/80s were on location at FGW. The permit was approved unanimously.

I hope Matt didn't hurt his right arm from all the live-catching 23 mill. on black knight requires :p

Oh yeah we just updated the code on Metallica at Gestalt to 1.51 - so fun!

Nice! They took out the Metallica at my office (boo) so maybe I need to go to the mission to play

    Quoted from Flamethrower:

Or you could come play in Oakland with me!

I totally will! June and July are filled with travel, but I will make it to Oakland. So many new games to play at Hi-Life!

I'll be there all day Saturday in the tournament area trying to beat the good players

Don't forget that FGW now has a Cactus Canyon as well! I was there last night to play and the CC is playing very well though the bad guys drop target isn't popping up (only during quick draw). Congo has a bit of a sticky left flipper when it gets warm, but plays just fine. Twilight Zone is playing really nicely.

mof, a warning about Rollergames at FGW. The upper flipper doesn't quite have enough power to make the side ramp. It's very difficult to lock balls and start multiball.

    #1848 9 years ago

Dirty Harry is still there. LW3 is now at The Summer Place on Bush & Mason (along with Laser Cue and World Cup Soccer). I believe that particular AC/DC is now at Elbo Room. The operator got some new locations and started moving games around.

There are five bay area leagues:

    * SFPD meets at Free Gold Watch in San Francisco. There's a wait list for new members (we have 75 members this season), but you can come play as a guest any night for $10. It's a great time. If you come as a guest, let me know so we make sure to meet. It can get a little crazy with all those people. Details: http://sfpins.org/
    * BAPA meets around the bay, typically in the south bay. http://www.bayareapinball.org/
    * East Bay Pinball meets at Phoenix Games in Concord. The location is awesome. http://www.eastbaypinball.org/
    * Belles & Chimes meets at Hi-Life in Oakland, but it's a women's only league. http://bellesandchimespinball.com/
    * Capitol Corridor Pinball League meets in Fairfield and Folsom. http://www.powertothepinball.com/

For tournaments is absolute best place is: http://hellaheartpinball.com/ -- it's up to date and there's a mailing list. Check that site often for tournament info.

The best location in Oakland is Hi-Life / Rico's Diner. Ten games and the op keeps them in great shape. It's the best place to meet fellow pinheads. If you head into San Francisco Free Gold Watch is the place to meet pinheads (and play 30 different pins).

    #1860 9 years ago

A team-based league could be a ton of fun for sure

I think the SFPD wait list is down to 20 people or so. There are 13 rookies in the season we just started.

Do you know what location the guy was considering? Gestalt is a sweat lodge and can't really hold more than 20 people for pinball...

    #1868 9 years ago
    Quoted from sosage:

We have another new league out in CCPL country. I believe it's called Solano Pinball League (I feel like I am mixing up Solano with something else). Meets through out Fairfield/Vacaville every other Wednesday. Really far for Oakland, but I thought I'd still mention it.

Ah, I do remember seeing that linked from hellaheartpinball.com but the link just went to a closed google group with no info so I forgot about them...

    Quoted from sosage:

BTW...speaking of teams: East Bay City Rumble III...it's coming. Announcements/dates/times will be coming in the following week or so. Stay tuned. Start courting up team members...unless you're chicken! >

Nice! Remind me to send you a proper SFPD logo so you're not stuck using Per's face again this year!

    East Bay City Rumble III

Yeah! I'll do my best to remember to announce this at SFPD on Wednesday. We have show you East Bay guys how it's done!

Where can I play Mustang locally?

The pinball map says Thalassa in Berkeley: http://www.pinballmap.com/bayarea/?by_location_id=1689

BUT the pinball map also says the machine was broken as of August 2014.

You should definitely come out to play tournaments!

Almost all tournaments are beginner friendly, but keep in mind that some tournaments run longer than others. Echa in particular have been running monthly tournaments that are very beginner friendly (prizes for first time participants, 2-3 hour time frame). You can see all upcoming tournaments in the Bay Area at http://hellaheartpinball.com/

Note that the next tournament is on Sunday at Hi-Life! Beware that this one has a sizable prize pool so I would expect many people to show up. That could mean the tournament will run a long time, but I'm not familiar with the format so I really don't know.

    Quoted from Flamethrower:

I'm running a tournament this Sunday (November 16th) at Playland-not-at-the-Beach in El Cerrito.

I couldn't make it, but my weekend plans got cancelled and now I'll be there! One the format: How many rounds will there be? Or how are people eliminated?

    Quoted from practicalsteve:

Putting feelers out there for a Rollergames again. This is for the future, not right now. Maybe within the next few months. If you have one you are thinking of selling down the road keep me in mind. I have a couple of old leads but always good to put it out there.

I think you should buy the one at Free Gold Watch so I don't have to play it at league nights...

    Quoted from Flamethrower:

My goal is to get everybody out by 9 at the latest.

That's exactly what I wanted to hear!

    Quoted from Sparky:

Here's a quick 1-minute video showing five or six flipper techniques to control the ball (not my video)

Cool video! I did note that it uses terms for techniques that are different that what I usually hear from local players. E.g.

Slingshot pass for a post pass
    Stall for a live catch
Drop stop for a drop catch
Nerves of steel I usually just hear described as a chill maneuver

The PAPA learning center also have excellent videos with flipper techniques (along with game tutorials and tournament coverage): http://papa.org/learning-center/video-resources/techniques/
