If you are really desperate you can probably play a game or two without it, but you risk getting your shooter and balls dinged up the longer you go without protection.
If your rod continues to tear them, you might try moistening the tip a little.

Try the lubricated kind...
Did it just snap due to friction, or was it a slow tear? Sometimes you need to forego the pleasure if you notice cracking.
