The question of "Why purple?" has been bugging me for a long time.
This thread shows that most people who choose to go with a solid, non-white GI almost always choose purple... why not green, yellow, or something else that would seemingly be more visible?
Found this on a website: "The natural lens of the eye blocks the passage of ultraviolet light to protect the retina, but the absorption cutoff is gradual. The deeper the violet color is, the more it is attenuated. Visible violet light is right at the edge of the region of the visible spectrum."
Maybe the folks who purp out their machines are ones where the lens doesn't filter lower frequencies as much. Where we see an unplayable mess, for them it might look like it's lit up like Times Square.
