The honest truth as well is that as long as you replace your incandescents before they start to get burnt or silver, the heat from them (even from 44s) is really not too bad (and I am a LED guy FWIW). Once they get burnt tho, the heat from the lamps can be very hot, and this is def. what melts plastics, and causes burns on the BB and other issues.
That said, it is just a matter of time as LED tech continues to improve, and the temperature range and control gets better and better every couple of years. Currently there are many bulb cover types that disperse the light in different ways. This too gets better and better.. I'm wondering when they will have edison type LEDs that match a 44/47... surely that would be the end of the old?
