by brighten up, you mean, make it so dark you can't see shit.
Bought this spy Hunter a few weeks ago. Owner did custom leds. After removing them all I noticed tons of inserts were really dim. I found they had been replaced with 194 12v automotive bulbs.

No. Of course you can't. You can't see anything with those lights like that.....

So many pinbots are ruined by people who think that looks good.

Well you can think that, however when I saw it at a show it looked great. I copied the red and blue theme and everybody loved it. A few years later I sold it, along with custom LED Neopixel rings in the pops. A lot of people like that theme, I guess because like myself, they didn't really notice the half red and blue robot arms extending down the playfield...until you color the GI red and blue to match. I played this game for years and didn't see it until the colored GI brought it forward.
My game still played the same with this GI color theme. It might have even made it play better! It sure got a lot more attention. I certainly don't like a lot of ridiculous GI color jobs....but this PInbot theme works.
Some games are "ruined" by LED color schemes that make no sense, but the red and blue Pinbot isn't one of them, and people will pay for it. When it was time to move on, the buyer loved it as much as I did.
still can't see shit on it, blue is horrible to try and see in, red is horrible to try and see in. Looks or not, it's unplayable in a dimly lit gameroom.

Maybe for you, nobody else had a problem. I play with overhead above the player LED puck lights at 50% brightness. The red and blue LEDs are brighter than the incandescent bulbs I replaced and ball times did not suffer.

I agree that doesn’t look terrible, but I feel like when there isn’t an overhead light on it like in my dark basement, it would be pretty hard to see.

I agree with you. I never play with the lights completely off, either. I had all white GI LEDs in my F-14 Tomcat, coupled with the insane amount of flashers, that game was nearly impossible to play with the lights completely off - much more difficult than the red/blue Pinbot. It's still a subjective thing - age/eyesight/sensitivity/ambient light....lots of factors. F-14 with white GI in total darkness = unplayable, at least for me.

people don't notice the red blue split until the lights are added, then they don't notice the art since its screwed.
PB is ruined with that lighting, you are wrong.
I had to stay away from this thread for a few months....the images were burning my retinas, and haunting my dreams!
I cleaned out 2 games that had old kits in them, with colored GI, and a head shaking choice of bulbs...I cringed, with each
bulb I pulled.
But a little empathy guys....the last year I did this, was a daily battle of, "....but why cant I put purple or color all in my GI?"
"Because you want to see the ball and the Art!"...Didnt matter, I stopped arguing.
I cant play any game like this....impossible, but Ill respect that some can do so.
Worse is colored GI, then white strips, arena like, around the cabinet to wash that color back down...awful mess!
When I first got into pinball I wasn't sure what the fuss about all the "clown puke" was. But now I have seen the light (pun intended). Warm white is the way to go it seems.
My SF2 (GASP!!) is all done in white except for one added light post in a darkened area.
My TFTC came with some funky colouring but when I shop it out it'll be returned to all white.
I don't understand how I put up with the bad colouring for so long...
Maybe the beauty with these things is the fact you cannot see the ball, therefore you play by instinct.
Maybe this is the way to go to attract younger players and sell the game when you're tired of it.
The Supreme machine was a paradigm shift in pinball. Now I'm not sure of anything.
What about colored incandescents? I put Pinball Resource reds in my Fireball Classic and it looks a little loud.
Or is this about all whites and clears when using LED's?
The Puke is obvious, but what will clean it up?
I think that when color LEDS came out, people realized that they could now tint certain areas of the playfield, whereas before there was only one choice of light with incandescent bulbs. Instead of being limited in how the machine looks, some owners now could run free and color bomb the crap out of everything. And that's what people did. Go totally overboard with the whole thing. It seems like there is no moderation in how it is done. You never see subtle color in GI's. Its all or nothing. I will admit that I have a few blue LEDS in my Waterworld GI, and also a few in my BSD, but that's it. If it was done in all my machines it would lose something and the effect would not be unique.
I could see doing a light blue LED in the whirlpool area in a Black Rose machine. One. Not pink or purple, not behind the translite to try and intensify the color, not all over the playfield, but just one. Something done in moderation and knowing when to stop. Some people would not even do one led in the GI, but I do not think that would wash out the artwork on the playfield.
Another thing to consider is the theme. Champion Pub has an awesome playfield, and a unique concept as far as pinball machines go. I saw a picture of one that was clown puked in blue and green, and just blue and green. It does not give the feel of an old time bar, which is having unsanctioned boxing in its basement. It looks like black light mini golf. Or one of those old paper mache looking haunted houses from the 70's that was painted with fluorescent poster paint. It totally changes the whole look and theme of the game with color that is completely out of place. The sad thing is that someone actually thinks that improves the look of the game.

I agree. If you look real close at my F-14, it had a couple of orange behind the center targets, I guess to accent the "explosions" in the theme of the art. The rest is white.

Not true. I still have boxes of colored incandescent bulbs and colored bulb condoms. I have a LOTR from 15 years ago where I did color change areas of the machine. The difference is it was subtle. The LEDs can be super bright and of course poor choices.
For example in LOTR there is a row of bulbs across the back plane under the DMD not in direct sight. I thought making Mordor and the lava flow a bit on the red side would add a mood. So I alternated yellow and amber incandescent. I thought Hobbiton should be green so I put a green bulb condom "a" GI bulb in the area. On White Water a lot of people put blue bulbs in the bottom of the Whirlpool ramp. In the Fester Scoop on Addams Family bulbs matching the electric chair bulbs.
So we played with this stuff long before LEDs were so available. But small stuff and only after the games were working.

You are right, but people did not put bulb condoms on every single bulb in the GI. The majority of the machines had plain old uncolored incandescent bulbs in them. You really did not see the obnoxious look of an entire machine glowing purple until people started using LEDS in them.

...and even more with this invention.

Shame it is a little difficult to color bomb the translite in this era Stern.
I actually can't see any coloured LED's apart from the top left and top right backboard blue and red ones. Am I missing something? It looks all cool white GI to me.

Yeah, you are missing that those colored bulbs make the whole thing look like ass.
