    Pretty awful.

There's no exception. No color GI.

What about a game that ships with it? eg. Space Station's green GI during multiball?

Oh, that sort of thing is different. That was done with the original art. Like, AC/DC has awesome use of color changing GI, but most of the modding we see is just a disaster and the art was never meant for it.

Yea, Black Rose does that too during the canon fire sequence (GI turns red) - it is one of my favorite parts of the game.

I assumed that was the case, but I always take exception to people using absolutes.

for games that has a mode that does it, it's fine for effect, but you don't have to put up with it for the entire game. or in attract mode.

Price Police. LED Nazis. Everybody wants to be an expert and dictate the way they think things should be. Shaming, pulling the " BS Authority Card" , crowd piling of like minded sycophants.
To those who illuminate their games they way they see fit, more power to you.

You're in the wrong thread. Colored GI pinball machines should be shamed so we can get rid of it. It's the worst "mod" out there.

Maybe not the "worst". Colored GI is aweful, but some of the "mods" people do are atrocious.

    A bit extreme......perhaps?

Sure, people can do whatever they wish....its their Property, and no one is saying they cant.

Its more a Poke, at what many feel is simply wrong. like a thread on Poor Christmas house lighting, or Walmart dressing.
It should be taken for just that, and no one she feel insulted, if this is what they like for their game.
    (My apologies if you do)

No Nazis.....There are Good LEDers on Both Sides!

But Ill Hang on to my BS Authority Card, I got it out of a Cereal Box at the Holiday Inn I was staying at!

Man, people are getting real angry in here. Next thing you know everybody's going to be lined up in true Braveheart fashion, one side hurling incandescents and the other throwing 14 SMD purple towers. I can already hear the bagpipes over yonder.

It seems to me that the thread was made for rainbow puke games, not LEDs in general. I've actually seen a few of my former games posted in here. I could care less. Using LEDs in the right way is a learning experience, but I've never necessarily gone all puke out on one.

I do think certain games like BSD benefit from some color, and I still use it somewhat depending on which game I'm doing. The reality is I haven't seen an LED made yet that perfectly mirrors an incandescent bulb, or I would use them. Especially 1 or 2 SMD's, even with a totally foggy dome, just don't generally have great illumination distribution because the SMD's are mounted pointing straight upward. And plastic just will never radiate light as well as glass.

I brought home a Xenon last weekend and threw some bulbs in it last night and early this morning. Used some color, but IMO tastefully to match the game. Here's the game when I brought it home (well, I threw some blue in the pops already at that point because when I bought it the whole PF was disassembled and in boxes), and after. (And yes, I know it unfortunately has a wear spot, and the tube and LED strip still haven't been reinstalled). Waiting for new ones. And I'm not a purist, so I added translucent flippers.

I love how the colour GI people always use the "tasteful" qualifier. As though somehow that'll make it okay that they consider it "tasteful".

Who's the arbiter of taste, Ronald McDonald?

    #815 1 year ago

"The colour GI people"...hahahaha. Sounds like a movie you would find on the SyFy network at 3 AM.

Tasteful is a matter of opinion, and everybody is entitled to one. My last post was very subjective and contained quite a few thoughts, but I guess you had to find something to comment on while twirling the pitchfork.

For instance, I looked at this print on your website link. I do not think it is very tasteful or attractive in any way, but apparently you do. (and simply irony that the title is "Light EM Up" considering this thread).

    IMG_3674 (resized).PNG

To each their own, and I just wouldn't feel the need to bash people that would like that piece of art.

I'm not a "rainbow puke" color GI advocate which appears to be the target of this thread, but continue on....

I de-puked my MM last night that the previous owner told me he spent $200 on a ''sweet'' led kit for it. It never really bothered me and these colored GI pics sometimes do look worse in pics then in person. I removed the green leds around the castle, the washed out reds by the top inlanes and I replaced all the GI bulbs with the proper white temp to match my added spotlights by the flipper area.

I kind of liked the green around the castle as an accent, but definitely agree that removing the purple at the bottom and the reds up top were a great choice. Looks way better.

you will never better yourself without constructive criticism.

and this involves more than just ones opinion. Just like dealing with sound, there is a science behind lighting and doing it the right way. Sound is the exact same thing. Sure you can setup your sound system however you want, but if you don't understand the science behind it. You will probably fail. So when you have experts come in and point you in the direction on how you can get the most out of it. Should probably listen to them.

I think that LED kit looked pretty damn good honestly. It didn't look over done at all IMO. I would change it back to the way it was personally but it's your game so you make it look the way you want to and don't be influenced by other peoples opinions.

Agreed. I would of gone with something in between of all white and clown puke. That's the cool thing about lighting, you can make it what you like in just a few minutes. I do struggle to understand why people buy these kits. You pay more for them than just buying the bulbs and end up with someone else's tastes in what they like.

That's what I've been saying, yes the overly saturated colors are bad, but a little color here are and there is A-ok, and it actually improves the look of the game.

    Quoted from Colsond3:

Amusingly, it's the best seller and the artist is extremely popular in the designer world - his prints generally sell out in minutes. If it makes you feel superior to know, the art prints haven't proven to be that popular with the crowd that like UV-reactive casino carpet in their gamerooms, alas.

But you're right, "taste" is subjective. I just commented that people feel the need to say "tastefully LEDed" - why add that qualifier unless you think there might be something wrong with clown puke?

Yeah I hate to say it but I personally like the before pic better than the after pic. I think a little bit of color is nice as long as it's not over done. People buy premiums because they like the color changing LED's and alot of the people who buy pro's add a little bit of color to them. Take TWD pro for example, it looks like shit from the factory with all of the white GI lighting, add a few color LED's to it and it changes the look (for the better) completely.

I wasn't influenced by anyone's opinion or this thread. Changing the lightning on my games including MM has been on my to do list for a while. I took advantage of Comet's Black Friday sale a few weeks ago and my package finally arrived last Friday.

I am pretty OCD and I like consistency across all my pins in terms of the way they look and play. MM is the only game in my collection with color accented GI. Here are some other pics of my pins where I updated the lightning on.

Warm white or natural white leds for GI only. If it interferes with game play such as flickering or strobing causing you to lose track of the ball then I go back to incandescent bulbs, I don't care how awesome it looks... remember function over form. I wanted to add leds to my TOM's GI to brighten things up but I know jpoop games use a lot of dimming. So I splurged for a GI OCD board and the game not only looks great but plays great as well. Thanks herg for making such an amazing product.

Those games all look great IMO. I kinda did like the MM LED kit though but it looks fantastic now also after you took the colors out of it. It's just whatever a person likes. I think the really bright blues and reds etc look like shit also but if it makes the owner of the game happy that's all that matters. The good thing is, if I buy a game like that, it's easy AF to change the light bulbs so it doesn't bother me any at all.

Thanks and if you are interested in my old MM led kit I'll sell it to you for $100, that's half of what the previous owner paid

Good thing with led lighting is it is 100 percent reversible if done in poor taste.

if there was nice artwork drawn and painted on those trees. Absolutely someone would have their head stuck wayyyyy up their ass. But they don't. Keep the colored LED's on the xmas trees and out of your GI's.

I rather play your de-puked version of MM. I'd also put incandescents in the GI but that's just me keeping the light source from 'flickering'. Playing a game in viewing optimal lighting comes first for me. Making a game's lighting look nicer comes second. And whenever the latter negatively impacts the former, it doesn't happen.

Coloured GI at a distance, meaning far away from your flippers may work for me. But any LED in the GI in the lower half of the playfield must go. Don't even get me going about blue GI, such a nasty colour with which to view anything. (Why would anyone want to make it harder to see the ball?)

As a rule I put incandescent bulbs in my GI.

    Quoted from superJackpot:

In all actuality, and aside from the otherwise comical and unnecessarily hostile back-and-forth going on in this thread, for those who prefer incandescent bulbs, either warm white or sunlight LEDs should really be considered.

They do replicate, for the most part, the look of incandescent bulbs, and save your plastics from burning and warping, and your backglass from burn spots and flaking.

    #836 1 year ago

It always gets hostile when trolls are afoot. This thread is about not liking colored puke jobs and removing them. There's no reason for people to continually come in here saying "I like color bombing;" it serves no other purpose than to rile people up and is the very definition of trolling.

Toppers to me are pretty dumb. But I don't hang out in the "check out these cool toppers" thread saying over and over I think they're dumb. But hey, we all gotta complain so when on pinside

Now just hold on there a minute. Are you calling the Topper on AFMRLE dumb???? One of the best toppers out there. TAF, white water, Wirl wind, Pinbot and many other that were factory produced are NOT dumb. But will have to agree with you on almost all of the aftermarket toppers are a waist of money.

No you hold on! Yes I'm obviously talking aftermarket toppers.

    #839 1 year ago

i'm not a fan of toppers either. Personally I think most are a waste of money. But there are a few that are really nice, and some that are ugly as all shit. I even have a topper on one of my games I think is a piece of shit, but it came with the game so I leave it on there.

I also think that every game should NOT have a shaker in it. There are very very very FEW games that a shaker fits the theme and used well. But they are a risk because they shake out all your screws and run the risk of shorting shit out. ES use is great. JP's is great. RS is ok. That's all that should have a shaker.

Absolutely true. I also like it in AFM for the saucer exploding, and wish I could integrate it into RFM for the same thing, just for the cut scenes with big explosions.

    #843 1 year ago
    Quoted from irobot:

    That's not necessarily true.
LEDs are a new thing on the pinball scene, so right now people are all slappy happy over LEDs and going way overboard.

They've been around. I remember buying LED's 10 years ago for my AFM.

    Quoted from hAbO:

I got a free package of LEDs the very first day Pinball Life got them in stock. That was 8 years ago. Not saying they weren't around 10 years ago, but they just hadn't been sold by the parts suppliers until late 2009 or early 2010. Granted, that's pretty close to 10 years ago though...definitely longer than 'a new thing on the pinball scene' for sure.

    #845 1 year ago

Yeah, this was from a company that is now gone. It may have been a year or 2 before CoinTaker but I cant remember. Compared to LED's now a days they were kinda cheap.

    #846 1 year ago

I don't get toppers either. Not sure what started people having to put something on top of every one of their pins. It just makes the games look cluttered imo. The backglass is suppose to be the center of attention on a pin, not some gigantic neon peacock sitting way up on top of the backbox.

Shakers are okay. They don't cost too much and plug right in on Stern games. I don't think every game needs one but it does add something to gameplay.

    #847 1 year ago

Yeah, toppers just seem silly, excessive and honestly look pretty dumb.

yes, the old school LEDs were pretty terrible. horrible light distribution. It was around 5 years ago when things started to really brighten up. But it seems to be only the last 6 months, FB sellers lost their ability to see.

    #849 1 year ago

This thread is about a phenomenon called "clown puke".

"Clown Puke" is where people put super-bright LEDs and colored LEDs all over their games, to the degree that you can barely tell what game it is.

There is no aesthetic rhyme or reason to the clown puke, the objective is to simply make the game glow with as much LED brightness and color as possible.

This thread contains multiple pictures of games that look absolutely horrible. The pictures are the evidence that clown puke is a bad thing.

Now the thread has been invaded by a couple of trolls and a couple of Clown Pukers who are whining about how their taste in art is being insulted and how a few "tasteful LEDs can enhance the look of the game."

    Here's the reply:

    1. You are correct, taste in art is purely subjective. Everyone is allowed to like whatever they like. You're allowed to make your games look like super-bright purple colored ass. But here's the kicker: other people are allowed to think your games look awful.

    2. Since this is a thread specifically devoted to hating on clown puke, it's entirely within normal rules of polite society to mock on clown puked games in this thread.

    3. If your feel-feels are all hurty hurt when people say they don't like clown puke, then why did you come to a clown puke hating thread?

    4. This thread is not about "tastefully enhancing a game with LEDs". It's about the exact polar opposite of that, sticking the brightest and most garish bulbs possible into a game. Nice try, though.

    5. Trying to win an argument by bickering, insults, semantic quibbles, etc. is a flat waste of time. Instead, do this: post up pictures of your clown puke games and let the public judge the game on its merit. The proof of the pudding is in the tasting thereof.

    You know what?

I've decided to switch teams and become a Clown Puker. The CPers have convinced me with their cries of anguish.

I see now how wrong I've been.

This translight is indeed "tastfully enhanced" with the judicious use of a few ever-so-mild colored LEDs.

Why not make an undersea themed translite glow bright red? It's AWESOME.

    What fantastic taste in art.

Polite golf clap! Tastefully done! Bring on the chateau le blanc 68 and veal cordon bleu! Such refinement! Such timeless artistry!

    None could have done better.
