Starting this thread for everybody who hates color gi that washes out and ruins the look of playfield art.

Feel free to post horror pics. Also looking for pics of games you bought that you removed the color gi from ( before and after pics).

    Happy venting.

Life is too short to be hating.....

I use warm white leds for all playfield GI. That way I can’t go wrong- they are a little brighter than incandescent but don’t wash out the colors.

    #4 6 years ago

I should be able to provide some quality entertainment in this thread with some of the games that go thru the shop.
    Great thread idea!

Now come on. Dracula I will say is the one exception that looks good with blues and reds for GI. But pretty much general rule of thumb is clown puke is bad! Lol.

Don’t upset the BSD guys lol

I did my T3 in blue and red and it looks freakin' awesome.
Other than that, cool white GI on the playfield for me.....

I agree that Dracula is an exception. It's the only machine I own that has non-white GI. Blue gives it the perfect night time feel and you're not drowning out any of the colors since all the plastics are blue.

I thought I would be cool to LED my flash a few years ago...yeah. I changed it back pretty quick...

I know its not quite "skittled" because its all blue, so I added this pic in honor of the thread theme...

The examples above are not mine, however this MM was, boy did I take some heat for the GI in my for sale thread...

I like using comet faceted 2 smd clear white bulbs. Lights the plastic without spotting and throws a little light out under the plastic.

What I can't stand is when color gets overused in backboxes. Here's a batman I saw recently. Joker looks like the hamburgler or Barney.

I have a High Speed that I'll be converting to LED soon. I was considering doing some green GI under the plastics that are supposed to be trees. Think that will turn out bad? I saw TNT posted a video where they did it and it didn't seem too bad.

yeah, it will turn out bad

If you want subtle color at the back half of a game then they only thing I have found acceptable for golor GI is to use a WARM White Frosted 2SMD form comet and then put a bumb condom of your desired color over that. The bulb comdom gives less saturation and the white warmness still comes through. use it sparingly and it is a nice effect.

LEDs are alot like cologne. A little bit is tasteful, too much is nauseating

    46
    #22 6 years ago

    I have hundreds.
Taste the rainbow, the flavor of burnt turdburger.
If a person thinks any of these examples are in good taste, their taste buds are already damaged from LED flambé.
Use common sense and subjectivity is not an issue.
Also, try to avoid contracting NCS (New Collector Syndrome), as bad LED usage is a direct symptom, and the disease is highly contagious.

I am a fan of warm whites or even incandescent bulbs in the GI. While I find many of the color choices bewildering, I only hate one; I truly hate the pinbot blue and red side GI.

I get it, one side has blue stuff and the other has red stuff. Do we really have to wash out every single other color? All that sweet artwork visually destroyed by a bad choice. It's just terrible and no picture of it will make me change my mind.

I think most people who do it think it's a good idea until they see it. Then they are $200 into the conversion and they refuse to change it back. They can't really like it!

Color LEDs should come with a warning label that reads: CAUTION - FOR INSERTS ONLY. GI should always whites - warm or cool to taste/game.

The issue gets confusing when you have color-changing GI like in Star Wars. Most of the time it's white but on some modes on the new code it changes to blue and red. The jury is still out on this.

Black Hole also looks great with some well placed ice blue on the upper playfield

    #30 6 years ago

Ice blue is a nice color that works really well in some games. Galaxy, BOP and others that have a cooler feel.

Is that an alternate back glass for Pharaoh?

    #32 6 years ago

It is an it has flame LEDs behind the torches and a 7 LED strip plugged into the "high score to date" socket that flashes and is placed behind the cobra.

Here’s my TOM. I think it has four purples for accents. Acceptable?

I think that looks amazing. That’s why I think the blanket statement of “whites only for GI” just doesn’t always hold true. But....warm whites and cool whites are def the safe bet.

Pharaoh looks good the one above it not at all in my opinion.

    #37 6 years ago

I'll admit at one point I did my Congo gi in green and then tried to convince myself it looked good by saying hey all the plastics are green leaves. I eventually stopped lying to myself and went cool white

    #38 6 years ago

I find the worst part about color GI is, people put how it looks ahead of how it plays.

We played a BSD in our league with the blue GI treatment and the owner doubled down by adding blue flipper bats.

It just looked awful, was almost impossible to see the ball and the blue GI almost made the flipper bats disappear into the art work in a big blue mess.

Mitch I never saw your Congo done up with green GI, good thing you changed it or I don't think we could've been friends

It’s “Better THAN most” mate. Not “Better THEN most”. Don’t you mean “opinion BASED”? And you start a thread calling out other collectors “fails”.

    #40 6 years ago

Does this not pertain to the newer games? Are we just talking like pre 2012? Most of the newer games have been coming color washed for years, but look incredible.

If they came from factory like that I'm ok with it.... except magic girl but that's barely considered a pinball machine.

BSD with blue GI looks killer and doesn’t change the way it plays. Practically a must barf color game.

Funny how people come to a thread devoted to people who like the original look of a game and call them haters. If you "hate" the original look of a game the way the designer intended it and think you have better taste then you are the hater. Wrong thread for you.

    14
    #45 6 years ago

I just did a writeup on facebook about the shitty use of LED's in games. And lately it seems to be an epidemic. So either we are getting a lot of newbs in the hobby, that other newbs are trying to encourage. Or the blind community has really taken a liking to pinball in the last year. I can't believe the amount of colortrash out there.

And no, it's not a matter of opinion. There is a science behind light distribution and how it reflects off other colors, both reflective, as well as translucency.

It's like cooking. If you want to make a cake with mayo instead of eggs. Sure...you can do it. But expect people to give you rave reviews when they are puking because of what you did.

I personally do not like the dull yellow of incandescent bulbs but I cannot for the life of me understand all the pink and blue in this thread. A color here or there to accent I can handle. I will put color in the back of games under solid ramps and I color match about all the inserts but mainly warm white led for me
