I recently finished shopping and adding LED's to my DE BTTF and I thought I would ask why this game is rated so low.

I know am biased since I grew up with it in my favorite pizza place in my hometown and was willing to drive 1500 miles to get one, but hear me out.

I get that the ruleset isn't the deepest, but it also isn't as simple as some would make it out to be. There are a few different strategies you can use.

1. You can focus on knocking down the drop targets and locking balls for multiball then drop the targets again in multiball and hit either ramp for the 2015 or 1885 (depending on which ramp) jackpot that progressively goes up as you drop the targets and hit the ramps from 500K to 1 million.

2. You can focus on hitting the MCFLY targets to increase the Casino spinner (which also randomizes the clocktower bonus).

3. You can hit the DOC targets to increase the multiplier.

4. You can hit the ramps to spell DELOREAN and get the million per ramp bonus (Deloean Millions), or you can hit the Clocktower shot to achieve bonuses (such as extra ball, 100K, Turbo Bumpes, etc) and the 500K century bonus for getting all of the Clocktower bonuses in one ball.

5. The Skill Shot requires you to hit the left ramp within a certain timeframe and before any other switch is activated, not a bad skill shot in my book, but not great either. The double your score skill shot bonus only applies to a score of less than 700k and it is random, you may get the 100k, 200k, 300k, or Extra ball.

6. The music is amazing! The BTTF theme, 2 Huey Lewis and the News tracks (my favorite band of all time), and a ZZ Top track. Not to mention all of the great callouts.

So other than not liking Data East and the lack of Michael J. Fox, what am I missing? Personally I love the machine and it will never leave my collection.

Nice! I don't know about the rating, but I love the backglass and I'd grab one if the price was right - especially if it was this nice.

#3 10 years ago

Well... I own all the movies and love them, but... as to your questions..... probably the biggest thing IS the lack of Mr. Fox and some of the speach calls. But who cares! Honestly.... if You love the game, who the hell cares! Enjoy your pin, and don't worry about what others think! Buy and play what You like! The common opinions don't matter. Have fun!~SpOoKy

I think a lot of DE games get undeserved flack. They had some really great pins.

Nice looking game!

I agree Director. Guns n' Roses, JP, there's a bunch of great DE pins out there. Heck, I even like Hook and Torpedo Wars. Sadly,..... the masses miss what good pubs they are.~SpOoKy

Very nice looking game!

SWEET!!! I would LOVE to own that game right there! The Back to the Future Trilogy is some of my favorite stuff of all time. ANY game is great when it sucks you in to it's "zone". I don't care how "deep" it is. If it sucks you in, it's great to you, and that experience can be on different games for different people. Top 100 lists be damned!

#9 10 years ago

I think it was fine for its time, and it's a great theme with great music...but once you start playing other games, you realize there just isn't that much going on in BTTF. It skates by on its theme & nostalgia. If I had unlimited space, I'd probably get another cuz the theme is cool....but from a pure play perspective, once my collection started to grow I realized I'd rather have a game with better layout/rules in its spot. Also, it's usually priced similarly to superior games - so it will always be compared to other games in its price-zone. It was my very first game, and at that time I thought it was the greatest game ever! Cuz hey, I had a PINBALL MACHINE in my house lol (and it was only $300 woooo!)

#10 10 years ago

Never played it. A DE with only 3000 made if you don't happen into it, you can just miss it all together

#11 10 years ago

that pin looks money, good job. and i would have no issue picking one. but they seem to be hard to find.

Now go kick Bif's ass!

#13 10 years ago

Why is this game rated so low. Because it could have been soooooo much better. Gameplay is average at best and gets old real fast. The music which is good, is probably the best thing about the game. This is coming from a huge Back to the Future fan. There is a reason MJF chose not to be on the game. I think we all know why now.

because they would have to add a shaker motor to it.

I am a HUGE BTTF fan, not the greatest layout but not bad. If I could find one priced right I'd probably pick one up (aint nutting wrong with DE). Friend is in a car club, one of the members has 3 deloreans and a ton of BTTF memorabilia, including a nice pinball machine.. They moved to another state but haven't sold the house out here yet. I'm half tempted to make them an offer on it.

BTW, love the mods you did to yours!

#19 10 years ago

im part of the de fan club. they have made some great pins.

#20 10 years ago

That looks great! I just missed a chance to pick up a BTTF about a month ago. Great music, good layout, nice art package (even with Michael J Faux), and the family & friends respond real well to the theme.

Don't pay any attention to the ratings. If you enjoy it, it's the right pin for you.

#21 10 years ago

Take me away...

I dont mind...

BUT

you better promise me

ill be BACK IN TIME !!!!

==

was my first DE pin and i dug it but as my bud Greg stated gets old fast

Thanks! It took me a couple tries to get the right Delorean, but the one 1:43 scale on tracks works perfect in that spot since there are track graphics down the shooter lane. Also, the hoverboard worked perfect since it's right next to the hoverboard art scene.

The blue XPin display was in it when I bought it and it came with a NOS backglass in perfect condition.

The Pepsi Perfect stickers are probably my cheapest and favorite mod. Pepsi Perfect Pingulp...Perfect!

I was thinking of making a custom topper out of an actual Delorean license plate bezel (perfect size), and add a future license plate to it and light it somehow, but they tend to sell a bit high. One of these days...

#23 10 years ago

Great game, love the Biff callouts and multiball lightshow with LED's is stunning.

#24 10 years ago

I do love mine, first pin I bought and it took a long time to get it up and running. I don't think I can ever sell it. It plays nice and fast, great sounds and lights! It is kinda simple, but that doesn't bother me at all.

Oh and I'm the biggest fan of the theme!

Very nice finishing touches. I like the game from time to time but just get bored over time.

DE had a lot of great titles. It was the Gottlieb of the 90s =)

#26 10 years ago

Only DE game that I've ever owned that I am now looking to re-acquire, love the way the music changes as it locks the balls Not deep, but fun, I know someone who has one, just haven't dangled the right bait yet

#27 10 years ago

This would be a the perfect license for a JJP style remake. Modes and Video from past, present and future and all 3 films. This would rock!

#28 10 years ago

I own a Secret Service, and just up to recently a Playboy 35th. Great digital stereo sound, good fun games.

Only negative I've ever seen is that purist of BTTF will hate that Micheal J Fox is not on it. He would not sign the papers and they had to use the likeness of someones kid. Other than that, I'd snag a BTTF, Robocop, Hook or any of those in a heartbeat if the price was right and I was buying.

Hook I have a special fondness for. It was the machine I was taught DE on by a factory rep when it was first released back in '92. I still have the original Hook manual with all my class notes in it.

That license plate I dangle off the back of my beefed up golf cart is one from the BTTF ride at Universal. "OUTATIME"

While I love the theme, the game is just too simple and boring for the long term. I'd drop a few bucks into if I ever saw it again, but I don't think it's a keeper for the home. And no Marty McFly...whaaaat? He's glaringly missing from the sound package. Bummer.

Yes, Paul Faris (the artist) used his son for imaging Marty and for Phantom of the Opera (Christine Dae) he used his daughter.

Nice looking game. Love the extras. Never thought to do that to mine when I had it. You can get the futuristic and outatime license plates for like $20-35. Bttf.com or.net I forget. Enay definitely has that stuff. Amazon may have them. The company that makes the repro Bttf stuff is called diamond select...I have a working flux capacitor and the 2015 holographic hat by them...they're great. Actually used the hat as a topper. Cheapest topper ever and you don't have to nail anything in!

Thanks! I have seen those flux capacitors, a bit spendy for the replicas but it would be a great topper!

Also here is a pic of the light show right before Multiball.

My first pin, got bored with it and sold it for this reason--plus the initial plunge is lame which adds to the lack of excitement. Music is great, clock tower is fun--but makes up for that by usually draining the ball right down the middle unless you wrack the table. Most of the voice calls are cool, multiball is fun and takes some work to get, but that still did not save this game for me.
