Documenting a Joker Poker SS Joker Poker playfield swap with another beautiful kruzman example. This is my second JP and ironically it was also another one of Ron’s.

This one is in excellent condition but they wanted it as nice as possible. So it will be getting new rails from TaylorVA with nearly everything else new. Huge thanks to my friend Turtle who was kind enough to share his PR order list. Thankfully Jimmy wasn’t too hard on me on some mistakes on my order. I’ll be using Ron’s kit to prep the holes as usual.

I won’t spend as much time documenting all the playfield prep as it slows me down and I think I’ve shared much of it already in turtles’s swap. If anyone has anything I should document, please ask.

Here’s the beauty about to go in:

I bet its nice to get to do a title you have done fairly recently. It seems in my case of swapping pfs you learn something new every time, weather about that title or maker or in general.
A JP would go great with my collection of restored gottliebs. I have about 15 sys 1 and sys 80's but I have a restored dragon, monte carlo (possibly the only one) and a eldorado city of gold. I had to sell the 007 unfortunately, so a JP is something I think I will look for.
I will say I love pascels board set. I really dig the skill shot, as well as the ball save that I can adjust for time. On dragon its easy to have a ball sink that I never touched. I cant say enough about that board, just really dig it.
I am sure you will do another beautiful job. Looking forward to the results.
cheers, rk

Bottom side is stripped. I’ll be running new lamp holders and ground braid so the old will be staying. Same with the rails.

Waxed the playfield and got the new rails on. The holes need opened up so I used Rons Dremel bits to open them up, countersunk hand tool, blow out and glue to cinch in.

I try and get rails on first to help keep playfield straight and will give it some rigidity.

Nice, really looking forward to watching this unfold.

I did my JP last year and replaced those light strips with discrete sockets to avoid having to deal with them (although they were working fine previously). Just easier to change bulbs in the future.

In hindsight are there any disadvantages to doing it individually like that?
Do you think it was designed that way for ease of assembly when building?

Ya know Taylor came up with a fantastic niche/angle with those side rails. He offers lots of options, and high quality materials and workmanship, and they make a big difference. my friend got some for his cenatur and they really stand out, and look fantastic. Since I have my own land full of different hard woods, I have all ways wished someone around me had the equipment to make stock from my round wood. I burn the most beautiful walnut, cherry, several kinds of oak, and hickory (in order of most used). I really hope the trend of individual craftsmen offering their high quality workmanship continues to grow. Its super hard if you have a family because america is for the most part set up so the employer provides the health insurance. I know several people with the skillz to pay the billz, but have to stay at their corporate gig because said billz for insurance are way to high for individual policies, and said skills are left without being utilized.

Not much to show today. The drop targets are dissembled and were cleaned today in ultrasonic.

The lamp wire was laid out and soldered in.

Next step is to lay in the harness and assemble the drop targets with new drops.

Quality control checking the old playfield.

I’ve started to lay the harness in. Everything is mostly close but some of the switch dimples are off or crooked. So I’m cleaning them as they get cinched down.

About 2/3 of the switches are in. I’ll have a long road of soldering ahead of me however.

Switches are all installed other than the ones for the drop target assemblies. They’re all adjusted and ready to go.

Soldered most everything other than the flippers and drop targets. Making progress with the supervisor checking my work.

I did catch her sleeping on the job...

Getting back to it... My father in law went with me to my clubs cruise down to Gettysburg for National Mustang Day yesterday.

The Titan rings I needed came and liking the yellow. If rodcom doesn’t like we’ll go back to white.

The drop targets are assembled, adjusted and installed. I have to solder them all in but otherwise it’s done after lamp and switch testing.

Pulled off the rotisserie to install the end pieces. Did a triple check and hoping for a Friday or Saturday install and test.

Quality control supervisor cleared it for install so it’s officially a wrap!

We had a successful install this morning but not without issues. Thankfully the two issues were simple. The first was the out hole kicker needed moved off to the left slightly. It was too close to the right and wasn’t able to kick the ball onto the rail. So something to check and the only thing the dimples weren’t right on.

The other issue really kicked my ass. The 10 point switches (there’s 11 and they’re all the same switch number) weren’t reading at all. We checked all of them and they were all showing closed yet none were actually closed. My next thought was the diode bank but I never touched them other than to clean. Tested those and they were all reading the same so wasn’t that.

Finally I figured it best course is to disconnect one at a time until I find the issue. On the second switch I found the issue. There must’ve been some solder that was closing the switch. After adjusting the switch it was all working!

So here’s some pics of the playfield up and running.

Looks like it plays really smooth.

I can attest that it is very smooth. Ron does such a nice job and huge reason why. A hard game just got harder!

It may be hard, but when they’re that smooth.... it’s your fault if u miss a shot. U can’t blame it on cupping, etc
