Quoted from tonyf1965:

I think part on, the sticking magnets/ on to long. Check your software version when you first turn it on. Newest software is about 14 eBay, from Canada. Also I would test those magnets with an ohm meter. They should all 3 test the same. I am guessing 5 ohms. Any lower than 4 probably shorted bad magnet, any higher than 12 ohms probably bad. Marcos sells them. The buzz noise that electromagnet is just loose. Welcome to the club!

Thank you! Going to take another look.

#352 5 years ago

Yes, that sounds like the magnet is locking on and possibly bad. Early software I believe was more prone to this. I'm not sure if a locked on magnet will damage the board, but can certainly melt the ramp

Just joined the club! No doubt a stupid question, but I am trying to figure out (without snapping the plastic) how to remove the ball plunge button. I can remove the switch, but the plastic bracket that holds the switch is what I can't figure out how to remove. What's the trick?

Pop off the light bulb housing on inside of the cabinet so you can see it better.

Found the answer on Facebook, it pops straight out. It was just very tight from never being taken apart.

I have a No Fear that occasionally will boot up with an error, U6 sound board cksum error. I’ve re-seated the chip and sometimes it works and other times it doesn’t. Sound test works.
So do I just need to replace the ROM and if so which one. I’m confused on that part. Do I replace U6 on the sound board or do I replace the U6 2.3 chip ROM?

dare I get a 3rd?

Just picked one of these up this weekend! Haven't had a ton of time to play yet but wanted to see what everyone has theirs set at. I'm at about 6.5 degrees and while I wouldn't say its slow, the orbits don't feel super fast either...just kinda...normal? The flippers could probably use rebuilt anyway so I may do that in the next few weeks, it looks like it's been a while since they have been touched which may have something to do with it.

Does anyone have a good scan of the autofire decals or a source? My insert there is getting pretty worn

Nothing on Bay Area or anywhere else. Looks like I have to make one if anyone has a good DSLR and wants to take a pic for me of their playfield

Well I'm guessing it's definitely time to replace the bushing on the jump ramp flipper . Hopefully this helps my loop skills.

I played a No Fear in Texas last year at the pinball festival and loved it. Big Steve Richie fan as it is. She's been sitting around a long time so I'll have to strip and clean her up adding some LED's and such. How do you guys get the skull nice and white? Clean it? Paint it? Can't wait to get it working and play the heck out of it. It was time for a new winter project to keep me busy and I figured a No Fear would be perfect! Typical side art fade so I'll be replacing that.

Well I picked up my No Fear. It's been sitting in a warehouse a long long time but she came to life. Thankful for that remote battery mount because the batteries started to leak! I'll be doing NVRam anyhow to avoid that all together going forward. Started to clean her up and add some LED's. Just placed some orders with Comet, Pinball Life, and Marco to finish it off soon. Playfield is beautiful and is cleaning up nice. The subway under the PF brought filthy to a new level for me! I don't think anyone ever cleaned that! Wow! Any ideas how to get the skull pure white again other then painting it? I've been playing the heck out of it so far and loving it! Can't wait to get the rest of the game shopped out and really spend some time on the table. My drop target is stuck up so the main board will come out. I'm sure a transistor shorted out because it looks like they replaced everything under the PF trying to fix that when it went bad. Any tips and tricks for the rest of my shop out feel free to chip up!

For the skull, I'm not sure there's an easy fix. Often you can soak in peroxide and put it in the sun, though some will say in a year or so it will get even worse. I think there is also a product called retrobrite that some use. Basically all of these techniques seem to involve oxidizing (light etching) of the surface. I've tried the peroxide technique on white toys to varying degrees of success.

Good luck

I'm starting to think prep it and spray it with some white spray paint!

Anyone had a subway this filthy before? Thank god for Novous 2! Came up pretty nice! I had to scrub the heck out of the bottom of the PF as well! I think it came up pretty good! My buddy thought the actual plastic was black in color when he first saw it!

#370 5 years ago

Let the tear down begin! This turned from a simple shop job to all the way down. The crud was just too much! Little before and after... She cleaned up nice!

Seems I was WAY back on my rom no less! Proto-type? I can't believe all the play this table has had over it's life the rom must have never been updated! Talk about a huge difference in game play!

Waiting on a new main ramp but what a ride. About 20 plus hours into this thing so far. It's almost ready to play! I'll play it a bit then it's getting all new artwork. Can't wait to put some hours on it playing it finally!

#372 5 years ago

Out with the old in with the new! New main ramp is ready for install. This thing was filthy and trashed in several places. Few nice coats of wax before I moved everything over so it should play even faster! Hopefully I'll be playing this weekend finally.

If for any reason anyone wants my old ramp pay for the shipping and it's yours. It's dirty as hell and broken in several places but still worked if your missing one. It might clean up as all the other ramps cleaned up nice and they were just as nasty.

What a fun game! I played this one on route yesterday ..... fast and a heck of a bang for buck.... played forever !

#374 5 years ago

And the final product! Came out really nice and plays amazing. ColorDMD going in tomorrow!

#375 5 years ago

Well I "thought" I had a bad DMD. Seems I have a bad ram! Installed the ColorDMD this weekend and thought it would cure the bad line in the display. Guess I'll be rebuilding the display board and hunting down the bad ram! Other than that, the ColorDMD looks amazing in this one! On the plus side I have a spare good DMD now to stash away.

I have some before/after photos on the cleanup of the No Fear: Dangerous Sports reimport I picked up a few weeks back. Man, that subway was dirty. It's now got full LEDs, LED OCD board, tri-tone powder coated armour, brite buttons, and new rubber.

So I'm about to go into my machine and do some work; replace the armature on the kicker, rebuild the skull(he works most of the time but then stops for a bit, can hear it trying to though), and replace all the lamps with LED's.

Something I was wondering about, has anyone done any sort of mod to shore up the wood block that's under the ball kickout? I know it's there to absorb the impact of the ball coming down onto the ramp, but on my machine the plastic is cracked and bowing from this happening repeatedly, so I don't know how well it's doing that job now.

I have this issue- see image. There are no sound issues that I can tell. Game still plays as it should. Ribbon cables have been replaced- did not help. I made sure all connectors are firmly seated. Any other suggestions? I am thinking I should maybe replacing the sound ROMs...

Hi there, just joined this club this weekend.

While setting it up harder so I have to "play better" I noticed an adjustment not mentioned in the manual: Accel. Difficulty (easy, medium, hard).

Not sure if anybody has experience with this? Does this simply refer to the force of the magnets, or does it pulse differently to make repeated jump ramp shots harder or ?

I can't fined this answered anywhere on the internet, though I admit I have not manually searched this thread...

#382 5 years ago

I'm selling - anyone interested?

I have a really tuff time making the jump. Not sure if it is my lack of timing skills or if the ramps aren’t positioned correctly. Can someone please post a similarly angled photo as I did so I can determine if my setup is correct
Thanks
(Assuming your makes the jump)

Was working on my No Fear late last night and when I put the subway back on it seems that if there's one ball in it, it won't roll all the way down to kick it up.
Two balls are fine. Anything to check? I'm away from it at the moment so I can't snag any pics. I looked at pics of a few subways installed to check my work.

#388 4 years ago

I'm in this club twice with 2 out on location.

Wow; how does it stack up as a location game after all these years? Given the prices these go for (I know I just picked one up for what felt like a deal at today's crazy prices) I can see these getting snatched up to fill a route slot over a hard to repair Spike era Stern pro...

I traded my No Fear in on a Black Knight Sword of Rage (Pro). Good thing there's another great No Fear just down the street at a friend's house!

#392 4 years ago

I recently picked up a No Fear that needed to be shopped. The seller claimed the skull jaw was not working. After completely tearing the game down and replacing all ramps, magnets, ect.... I found the skull coil was completely burnt and fused to the piston. I was able to remove it and replaced everything.
When I powered the game up last night the skull coil started smoking right away. I assume the coil was locked on.
I was hoping you guys might help point me in the right direction for repair.
Thanks and happy to be in the club.

Anyone have a good way to line up the flippers? I did a shop on mine with complete flipper rebuild and I matched them to the outlanes like I normally do but I think they are aimed down too far now. Sure wish the PF had the holes to line up the flipper bats!

Well, I just bought my very first pin. And yeah, it's a NF so I'm pretty psyched! It's pretty much ready to go with minimal issues (I need to adjust the plunge to hit the drop down) but I do have a question: What are these clearly pointy things? I can't see a real benefit to them, but surely they have a function. I look forward to a reply that a) is enlightening, and b) makes me feel silly for asking

I'll be honest I've been collecting games for several years and had no idea either, just assumed it was cosmetic. The more you know!

I put a little white round post rubber on those when I shopped mine out. Just in case the balls gets up there it will bounce away and it least with the rubber on it, it looks like it belongs there

Hey there,
Helping a friend fix his No Fear and was hoping you guys could help with a pic or two. He seems to be missing 2 sets of optos, so I am looking for the wiring on these mostly. Any help is appreciated! Here are the two spots. Both on subway. One by the VUK is only missing a white one.
