Getting all the moons is going to be a massive chore. Sorry, I like the game but I can't see why everyone thinks it's so perfect. Ah well, I'll just buy moons 10 at a time in the shop.
Quoted from northvibe:those moons don't mark them off your list though. You just need those after you collect every one, to meet the 999 task
but they do power up the Odyssey.
Quoted from jayhawkai:Anyone else enjoying the music as much as I am?
» YouTube video
I don't know how much you are, but yes I'm enjoying it a lot. I can't imagine that any other company puts as much effort into their games music.
I've returned to New Donk City to complete the band, etc and it was wonderful. However, searching for Pauline's gift and trying to figure out where to plant seeds reminds me why I don't consider this a perfect game.
Flip Wars looked interesting but had some issues at launch, it may have been fixed by now.
Edit: I just read some reviews and they are pretty awful. Maybe Overcooked would be a better plan for some local multiplayer fun.
Quoted from winteriscoming:I honestly don't get the whole amiibo thing. I see those games with physical toys you scan to get a character in your game (Skylanders and Lego Portals?) and that makes sense, but what does an amiibo do other than let you get small bonuses in a game for paying for a toy? /blockquote>
They are not essential by any means but they can be useful. I like what they have implemented in Odyssey where tapping Amiibos gives you hints for the power moon locations (without paying 50 coins).
Talking of which, Pinball FX3 is out on the Switch and you can get 3 free tables at the moment. It has a very nice portrait mode.
Quoted from northvibe:Omg they have horizontal support.... freaking sweet!!! I can’t wait to see people make vpin mini cabs to hold their switch!
I hope it's just coincidence, but since I started playing that, I've had a lot of problems with my joycons freezing or going crazy. It was the same with another pair so it's the consoles problem.
Thanks all. My joycons even play up when connected to the console but it's a bit intermittent. I'll get onto Nintendo after Christmas but fortunately I have a Pro Controller (which may be why I didn't notice a joycon issue sooner).
I really like Splatoon 2and it's almost all that my son plays. A brilliant Nintendo answer to the FPS genre.
(Response to Tsskinne)
Quoted from Gov:Yup, once you learn to parry their attacks they are easy.
I never did manage to get the timing right and it still breaks most shields, right?
I must get back to Zelda, I had about 20 shrines to find when I got a bit bored and moved on to other games.
Quoted from Nexyss:It only breaks the shield when your timing is off. You can do it with any shield if your timing is good.
Therein lies the rub
It's perfect for the casual gamer, it obviously wouldn't be your only games machine if you have to have all the latest war games in 4K etc.
Quoted from Darscot:Not everyone can afford multiple consoles and if you can only choose one Nintendo would be a bad choice they just can't compete. Thinking the 3DS is anywhere close to the revenue of PS4 is pretty funny.
I've had a Nintendo console as my only gaming device for many years now (including the Wii U). I have been perfectly happy with that as (in my opinion) Nintendo games are always the most fun. I'm not constantly playing video games and I still have a bunch of games that I haven't even unwrapped yet.
Quoted from Darscot:A gamer from the UK and you only play on Switch trust me you are an insignificant minority.
That's fine by me and I wouldn't call myself a gamer.
I need to fire up the Wii U, I'm another one who bought Tropical Freeze but never played it (I have quite a few games still in their wrap). I won't bother to buy it again for the Switch.
I just saw a video of Beat Sabre, a VR game on steam. I'm a bit partial to a rhythm game and I can't help thinking that it would be a good use of the Joy Cons. Not as immersive of course, but I can't see any real need for it to be in VR.
Quoted from Rarehero:Thumper was a VR rhythm game that came to Switch. It’s awesome as a portable game w/ headphones during a break at work for a few quick levels.
I have Thumper and I agree that it's awesome with headphones (also on a big TV with a nice sound system in a darkened room). I find myself not playing it for a while and finding it hard to pick up again though.
Quoted from Rarehero:How far can you get? I'm in the middle of level 5 and it's SOOOO hard. I HAVE to put it down for a while and then when I pick it up, hope I can complete just one more small section before I'm exhausted again lol
I'm on level 4 with 4 stages to go.
Quoted from Rarehero:Holy moly! Up thru level 4 there’s some leeway if you don’t get everything perfect...Level 5 has those things that kill you instantly if you miss something. Ooooph!!!!!
I took it up to 5-11 (Boss) yesterday, it really is something else in TV mode with the sound up and the controller(s) rumbling in your hands.
Quoted from tomdotcom:I played Thumper on HTC Vive VR, it's pretty sweet on that system
I can imagine.
The middle section of level 5 is quite an adrenaline rush.
Back to Thumper, is it possible to stay up long enough to get all the hoops in 6-1? I always seem to fall down before I get them all and I'm wondering if I'm missing something or if I have controller issues.
Quoted from Crash:2. Emulation does not equal piracy unless you download game ROM/disc images for games you do not own. The emulation software uses no code from Nintendo and thus no copyrighted content, which makes it legal to own and use. Unfortunately the two ideas of emulation and piracy have been associated by the masses and it hurts the image of people working on this type of software with the end goal to play the games they already own on a different platform other than the actual console, and for hombrew software development on real consoles.
What percentage of people who download games for emulators would you say own all those games? I would guess that it is in single figures.
Quoted from Crash:Oh definitely, it still does not equate emulation itself to piracy. If I wanted to play a pirated Wii game, I can do it with or without emulation. The emulator just runs the games. A better explanation if you want to get in to it:
Well yes, technically it's not emulation that I don't like, it's the fact that people will be ripping/downloading Switch games instead of paying for them.
Quoted from Frax:How the HELL are you guys NOT talking about Smash Bros..
My faith in you is severely shaken.
Never got into it. I'm more likely to enjoy Fortnite.
Quoted from Frax:I would downvote this if I was allowed to.
You want to download someone because they like different games to you?
I never got beyond button mashing in Smash Bros, Fornite is fairly easy to get into and good fun. It just needs motion control on the switch.
Noted that you hate it.
It seems that anyone who has played Zelda and Splatoon with motion controls but hasn't played a lot of FPS games on consoles thinks that motion control is the best thing since sliced bread but anyone who comes at it with FPS gamepad experience hates it at first. Stick with it, it's so much better (says someone from the former camp).
Quoted from FatPanda:I usually don't go for third party peripherals, but does anyone have a good alternative to the Pro controller? I can't justify the $65 price tag on those puppies.
I'm a bit late to the party but there is an official Nintendo wired controller that is about a third of the price. It doesn't have motion control though.
Quoted from northvibe:Negative. Only the pro controller. There are licensed wires controllers though.
Well, OK it's made by Hori but it has so much Nintendo branding all over it you would hardly know.
Quoted from ozuba:I’m curious about this as well, and also Overcooked vs Overcooked 2
I haven't played 2 but 1 is a fun party came with plenty of frantic shouting and stuff. I even had my non-playing wife taking on a bit of a managerial role at one stage.
Bought a new surround sound system and found out that Fortnite doesn't have surround sound on the Switch (yet?) Grrrr. (And yes, I know some of you hate Fortnite but I've been playing it a lot lately.)
Quoted from j_m_:physical edition of worm w.m.d. coming in 3 days. limited to 4,000 copies
https://superraregames.com/products/srg-6-worms-wmd-switch
I might have to get that and Yoku's Island is on sale again too!
Quoted from Rarehero:Word is that all GameStops converted their new Yokus to used & selling them for $16. Pretty sweet if you want it physical.
I didn't require physical this time, it was £9.something in the UK eshop.
Quoted from Pinballerchef:I own the game buuuut never got into it...I will at some point though. I’m not exceptional at FPS gamrs.
Splatoon 2 is a great one to play if you are not great at FPS games. Fortnite on the other hand...
Quoted from j_m_:the other major issue is the voice chat. without having a dedicated/optional feature built into their controllers or system and no requirement for games to accommodate it, again it makes it difficult to try and retrofit the existing games to support it
It doesn't seem to be a problem on any other system, everyone seems to realise that you have to buy a headset and even really cheap ones work. It works fine in Fortnite.
Quoted from Who-Dey:Guys let me ask you a serious question here......please no down votes! I know that Smash Brothers is a huge hit on Nintendo and everyone is dying to play the new Smash Brothers game.
My question is why is it so popular? I have never played it but ive seen people play it and i don't think it looks all that fun? Its just a bunch of characters beating the shit out of each other like mortal kombat looks like. What am i missing here?
No idea, I played Smash on the Wii U about 3 times and sold it.
Quoted from northvibe:Some of the path travel is confusing but once you get a feel for the layout it seems to be better.
This is the problem I have, I pick it up for a game, wander around lost and put it down not having got anywhere. It sounds like that can be overcome though.
Quoted from ralphwiggum:I often forget it is on the Switch because I bought it on the WiiU when it came out. I am one of like 12 WiiU owners, and love that System too. I held off on the Switch when it first came out because all of the early launch titles were games I already had on WiiU. Once Super Mario Oddysey was released, I bit the Switch bullet. I still play our WiiU as much as the Switch...... A lot of great titles on both systems.
I just started playing Tropical Freeze on the Wii U after having it on the shelf for probably a year or so. Af first I wondered why everyone is saying it's a hard game, then I played a few more levels!
Quoted from gweempose:I also own a Wii U and have Tropical Freeze for it. It's a great system and great game! My favorite Wii U game, though, is Rayman Legends. That mariachi "Eye of the Tiger" level is fucking brilliant!
I loved the musical levels, I wasn't quite so in love with the rest of the game, I didn't bother to complete absolutely everything like I would in most Mario games.
Quoted from Eskaybee:Got a switch for me and my 6 year old for Xmas coming. Any recommendations on memory card? Will the 32gb internal memory suffice for a few games before we really start downloading more? I was thinking a 256gb stick once we get rolling after a month or so.
Also, what’s the consensus on joysticks. I got 2 pro controllers to go with the console but are joycons where they’re at? Will I want the pro controller being a bit older...err wiser
I'm still managing without an SD card, I have about 6 cartridges and about the same number of downloaded games.
You will want a pro controller unless you are happy with awkwardly placed tiny buttons (it is possible to get used to them). Beware though, we had 2 pro controllers in our house go bad after a year to 18 months. (Left stick stops responding properly).
I played Tetris 99 today. Every time I was getting somewhere, my Pro Controller D-pad let me down with an unwanted instant drop. I've had a go at modding the controller, otherwise it will be joy-cons for me. It is a very fun game and a very nice present from Nintendo.
Quoted from Rarehero:Wish I could get a handle on the T-Spin thing. I’ve played for almost 10 hours and have done it once by accident lol. I watched a guy streaming with 85 wins - and it was just non stop t-spins without even thinking...I’ve tried to set it up and do it and I just can’t figure it out.
There's a good t-spin tutorial on youtube in 2 parts, it covers how you should be looking to set it up (including triples).
Quoted from Rarehero:I understand it in theory, but I can’t actually do it well enough to be useful in actual gameplay.
Yeah, I'm much the same. It does look like a black art when they rotate them in for a triple.
Quoted from Kronlar:Mantis burn was a fun one. Reminded me of the old RC Pro Am on NES or ivan stewart off-road with better graphics.
Ooh, I loved RC Pro Am.
Quoted from Hobbypinball:If you haven’t tried Yokus Island Express then go do so now. It’s a pinball/platformer. It doesn’t sound like it should work, but it’s awesome.
Any tips on figuring out where to go next as opposed to getting hopelessly lost?
Quoted from PinJim:Anyone have a recommendation for a game that’s comparable to Super Mario Oddysey? I have 4 and 5 year old boys and they love watching me play, but we’ve almost exhausted Mario. Zelda is a bit heavy for them, hoping to find another light hearted game.
It's not really the same thing, but you/they might like Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. It's a fun and beautiful platformer, very hard in places but the Switch version has various options that make it easier if you want to use them.
Quoted from Jarbyjibbo:Now to decide the next game to sink my teeth into... that is as soon as we finish binging Downton Abbey
Haha, I'm in the same boat. My Nintendo and Pinball lives are suffering.
Quoted from Darscot:I completely agree with the travel times on the original Windwaker, I got through it but the sailing was ridiculous. Didn't they fix it in the HD version allowing you to warp or something. Once was enough for me so I never played the remake.
If I remember correctly, you could fast forward the sailing so it went much quicker.
I'm patiently waiting for my copy of Bubble Bobble 4 Friends. I didn't notice that I was ordering from a place with 2-5 business days delivery (read that as 5, if you're lucky). Meanwhile, it's cheaper on Amazon now with next day delivery
Quoted from Rarehero:It came out? I’m looking on Amazon and there’s isn’t even a listing.
It's [Bubble Bobble 4 Friends] out in Europe but for some reason other places have to wait until next year. I have to say though that as a huge fan of the original I'm totally underwhelmed. They just seem to have sucked all the magic out of it.
Quoted from Rarehero:That’s too bad. Was it developed by a Euro company & not Taito in Japan?
A company called Inin Games, yes European, I think.
Quoted from FatPanda:I've owned my copy for about a year now. I haven't given it earnest gameplay, but it's also a game that I don't find myself wanting to load up either. I can't be the only one, right. What am I missing out on?
I played it through and got all the moons with the help of online guides. It was a really good game but I wasn't blown away, 3D World was more enjoyable for me.
Quoted from Jarbyjibbo:Any feedback on Ring Fit Adventure? The wife brought it up that it looked "interesting" and that she'd be willing to play it but wanted some feedback if possible before I dropped the $80 on it.
It's definitely a fun way to exercise but the game would not keep you coming back if you had no desire to exercise more. IMO.
Just keep cleaning out that dust that appears around the Pro Controller sticks, otherwise you might be taking it apart just after the warranty expires to fix the stick drift.
Quoted from bowtech:Anyone play the rings of adventure work out game? If so, do you feel the work out? Looking for something for the wife and daughter to play while cooped up in the house.
I played a few mini games Sunday morning, my arms were killing me after.
Quoted from Eskaybee:Any bubble bobble fans? New one looks cool, 4 players! I’ll be downloading it this weekend to play with my son (7) “, daughter (soon to be 3), and wife. Should make for a fun family time. The original bubble bobble was one of my favorite arcade games growing up.
As a fan of the original, I really didn't like it. It did get a little better later on but I played it through and sold it on. The included original Bubble Bobble is perfect.
Quoted from Backyardace:Anyone have Ring Fit Adventure? It’s selling for stupid money. I’m curious if it is a good workout option? Why are people paying 3 to 4 times the retail price?
We have it, nobody has played it much although we enjoy it when we do. It's a fun way to exercise but it's not such a great game that it makes you exercise.
Quoted from InfiniteLives:Been playing Rayman with the wife , is really good if you haven't played it. I had in on Wii u, forgot how much fun it is.
Do you also have Yooka Laylee?
I murdered a joycon trying to fix it. I was trying to be careful with the ribbon cable but ended up knocking a half off the table or something and ruined it.
Quoted from tacshose:Is the Pro controller worth the money?
I think it's overpriced but it is a good controller. We've had 2 fail (drift issues) in our household just outside the warranty period but taking them apart and cleaning them fixes them.
