Had Ridge Racer 64 on N64 and loved it, bought a PSP on launch day and got Ridge Racer with it.

I think almost every console had a Ridge Racer on launch until after the PS Vita game.

Havent heard a new one from the series since that one tho i could be wrong

I actually got my N64 used from a guy who sold it to buy a PS1 back in the day. 1996 or 97 , would have been 11 or 12. My mom took me to meet the dude, was like a college kid , in a trailer park. got a sweet deal. Found it of off a rudimentary local craigslist type website called swap shop lol. System CIB with a CIB extra controller and mario 64 cib.

Optical games are dead. It's no secret Sony and Microsoft want to do away with them. I expect the the next XBOX and the PS5 to be digital only. That will leave Nintendo still selling cartridges. Irony of ironies, the much maligned cartridge will have outlived optical media.

In a quasi-related nugget, CD sales continue to collapse, while vinyl increases. Vinyl will remain a niche, for sure....most people will be streaming, but there will always be a market for people that want to own their music. Vinyl will meet that need for most. There will come a day within the next few year where vinyl will outsell CD.

If you had made either/both of these statements back in the 90's, you'd have been committed!

my buddy mostly only digital downloads for both switch and ps4 and his ISP is now screwing him cause of all the data used because of it lol

Quoted from Pinballerchef:

I loved the RR titles as well. That’s what got me into racing games. The original RR disc would allow you to pull the disc out during a race and add a music CD to play your own tunes during the race...really neat feature that was never used again that I can recall.

Some games let you do that if the whole game fit in the system's memory & the audio was redbook. The Ridge Racer sequels were much bigger, had tons more music, and had lots of loading between races for this and that.

Wow, yeah. Data caps are still a big issue for many and the issue will be even more prevalent next generation as games likely shift to using true 4K assets for the XBOX Two (or whatever it will be called lol) and PS5.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a version of the next XBOX and PS that is a streaming only device, where the games are streamed from MS / Sony servers to their devices, and a second that is a more powerful version that supports physical disks. I also think a version that supports physical disks is likely as a majority of XBOX One and PS4 owners will expect for their current games to be backwards compatible on the next gen systems. With the current generation using an X86 architecture (same as PC's) there's no longer an excuse for next gen systems not to support current gen games if its also X86 based.

it will be interesting to see what the impact of the new "5G" network everyone is trying to roll out will be on speeds and rates.

I remember when 4G LTE came out, L T E meaning Long Term Evolution, and here we are with 5G being the thing lol. It is crazy how many towers are on practically every street corner now and real low to the ground in compassion to other cell towers.

Dang, Starlink dropped again - it's $30 on Amazon!!! That's worth it just for the rad Starfox Arwing ship!!! ...but the game is actually really cool, too!

I think the whole "toys to life" genre is finally dead, Ubi soft missed the target by like 3 years.

Totally...but as a Starfox fan, it's a pretty sweet game featuring Starfox & crew, and the Arwing ship is really nice. You don't need any of the toys to enjoy the game, so that's good....and you don't even need the toys to PLAY the game. The now $30 kit includes the Arwing, another ship, 2 pilots, 2 weapons (plus the Arwing lasers if those 2 are disconnected) all digitally.

A bunch of the toys are already half off on Amazon. I figure I'll get them when they're dirt cheap like Skylanders just to unlock a few more things. Or maybe the DLC digital versions will get cheap, but based on Ubisoft's record so far, they're shitty about putting DLC on sale.

Ordered Smash Bros. for my son for Christmas, and two GameCube controllers. I had heard a few of the early shipments of 2018 GameCube controllers had some drift issues, so I opened them up and tried them out on the Switch to make sure they were OK. Man, did holding those bring back some memories. They really feel great. Glad we'll be using those for Smash, while his buddies get stuck with half a Joy-Con.

I can only hope Metroid Prime 4 supports using the GameCube controller. I mean, the basics will work with any game....as long as you don't need two shoulder buttons. I just hope they keep this controller in mind when Prime 4 being designed.

I received my fangamer flip grip yesterday and it's really nice. the only thing that has me scratching my head is why the system itself goes into the flip grip the way that it does (blocking the on/off and volume buttons

am I doing something wrong or was this just a huge oversight to put the system release button on the opposite side?

edit:
apparently, this was a design choice so that the game card slot and SD card slot were still accessible when the system is inside of the flip grip. personally, given the number of people going with digital releases, I would have thought that the other features being accessible would have been prefered

however, it is still a really nice quality product and this little design issue won't impede my enjoyment of it

Parents will tell you....get the cartridges. When your 6 year old kid clears out a game in 2-4 weeks, you'll be glad you can get $25 credit towards the next game with a trade-in.

Guys let me ask you a serious question here......please no down votes! I know that Smash Brothers is a huge hit on Nintendo and everyone is dying to play the new Smash Brothers game.

My question is why is it so popular? I have never played it but ive seen people play it and i don't think it looks all that fun? Its just a bunch of characters beating the shit out of each other like mortal kombat looks like. What am i missing here?

#1681 5 years ago

Give it a shot and you may sing a different tune. But if fighting games are not your thing you may not like it. I am pumped and if anyone sees me online aying send me a challenge!

I think the franchise cross over aspect plays a big part of the appeal. Sonic vs Mario is a 90's dream match. Plus Nintendo works really hard on the game and it shows. Also "Smashing" guys off the screen seems to get people excited.

Im definitely not knocking it, i just dont see why everyone likes it so much. Maybe fighting games just arent for me because im not a big fan of MK either. I think its fun to play a few matches of it and then i quickly get bored of all the button mashing. Thats why i was wondering if Smash Brothers was anything different than like Mortal Kombat. It sounds like pretty much the same thing maybe?

Maybe I'll trade Splatoon 2 in on it because i dont like that game at all and i can still get a fair trade in on it. Worst thing that happens is i end up with another game that i don't like but has good trade in value.

It’s not like most fighting games. Beyond the novelty of various unconnected Nintendo and third party characters brawling, it’s very simple for non-gamers to pick up and play. It doesn’t have overly complicated button combinations. It’s a grab and go game that also has seasoned players.

And don’t underestimate the coolness of the GameCube controllers.....which you can still use on the Switch!

That sounds a little better maybe because one if the things i dont like about mortal kombat is theres no way in hell i can remember all.of those button combinations so with the exception of a few moves i am doing alot of buttom mashing while fighting and hoping for the best.

I have a question about Nintendo Online. Can I share one individual membership if both my kids will be playing on the same Switch, or do I need to purchase a family membership? They want to be able to each go online and play games using their own profile.

If they all have their own profiles you will need the family play if they plan on playing online with their own profiles.

Thanks! I figured it out, but only after I had already signed up for the individual plan. I then signed up for the family plan. Hopefully, I won't get charged twice.

I am loving Smash right now. I haven't played since Melee and it is bringing back all of the feels. Just sitting here grinding out unlocks all evening and listening to music. Pretty good way to spend a gloomy cold Friday night :p

#1694 5 years ago

With its dual joysticks; the Switch needs a port of Smash TV.

#1695 5 years ago

Smash is a interesting fighter. It’s only a few buttons, unlike most with 4 (kick, high kick etc), however it still has the techniques and technical play to make people watch moves per frame aka competition.

We play the wiiu one at work for fun, I die a lot via falling off the level but it still is fun.

Okay, so I'm posting this because there is a chance I'm not the only one this daft.

I thought the my Nintendo points you only got if you bought the digital download games

Physical games you get them too, but have to redeem in the first year of the games release, so missed out on a bunch like Mario, Mario kart and Zelda

Anyways, from the home screen press the + button and in the bottom there is a my rewards redemption tab, click it and follow the steps to get your points.

points are not very valuable but over time might be able to at least redeem something worthwhile

I bought yokus island express as it was on sale. Wow, this game is a unique fun puzzle pinball platform game! I’ve been trying to play as much as I can between house work etc. you go on one mission and boom you’re doing 50 other side things and exploring. Some of the path travel is confusing but once you get a feel for the layout it seems to be better.
