I recently picked up a Night Moves, and I'm having a number of intermittent issues with it. I've done some reading and can't determine what my best "first step" should be for trying to remedy them. I see a lot about connectors, but don't know which ones to target first, if I need to replace the whole connector (or just re-pin them), etc.

Below is a list of just some of the oddities I'm experiencing. I'd appreciate any insight on what to try first. Please be as specific as possible, as I'm not very familiar with 80B. For example, if I need to work on connectors, which ones? Any I should target first? Any tips on where to purchase?

Thanks in advance!

List of Issues:
- Credits drop to 0 after a game completes, even though there were plenty loaded.
- A 5 ball game will continue on to ball 6, 7, 8, etc.
- Random display issues where unknown characters replace the numbers in a score.
- Both "lock" and "bonus collect" lamps flashing simultaneously.
- During a one player game, additional players will be added after the first player drains (without credit button being touched).
- "Club" and "Rio" touch target lights freeze and light solid. Won't register hits.
- Score over a million will drop significantly, and sometimes go back up.

Gottliebs are not exactly the most beginner-friendly pins to repair. Repinning connectors in Gottliebs from the System 1, System 80/A/B era is absolutely necessary. I personally think you should repin all connectors, except for the display connectors as I find those don't really give me any issues. This includes all connectors on the power supply, the interconnect harness, and most plugs on the MPU and driver board. Also, ground mods on every board are a must. I think most of your issues will go away after you do this. When recrimping you will want to reuse the housings as these edge connector housings are unobtainium.

Another thing for these 80Bs, there is a small reset board which you can unplug and throw in the trash (or keep for posterity/parts). It causes more issues than it fixes. Read about it in the link below.

As for your credits dropping to 0, and garbage in the score displays, that sounds like either a RAM issue, or a battery backup issue. I would start by adding some kind of battery solution, whether that be a coin cell battery, a remote battery pack, or NVRam (NVRam being the best, but most costly solution). Then clear the memory as it will get corrupted after adding your battery solution. Does your board have any alkaline corrosion damage? That could also be causing weird game issues.

What an awesome and helpful answer. As someone with a mostly working night moves. I will be referring to this if I have any of these issues. Thanks.

A couple other things...

The 80B MPU has a daughter board which commonly gets bad solder joints causing the game to lockup or not boot. If you find this happening consider getting this replacement board which bypasses the original daughter board. This way you don't have to worry about removing the old, and you can simply use the new.

Check out the suggested repairs for the 80B power supply, it's fairly simple stuff. The 80/80A power supply rebuild is way more involved.

Just wanted to follow up and let everyone know I have finally solved all my issues!

First I re-pinned all my connectors, which didn't fix the problems.

I finally consulted a tech in the area and he suggested a new MPU since mine was an original and likely susceptible to issues from age. I purchased a new MPU from Swemmer Electronics, plugged it in, and it immediately fixed all my issues. Thanks to everyone for their help!

Nicely done! The re-pinning will also ensure reliable operation.

Also, props to Knxwledge for that super-informative post further up the thread.
