Hello,

I'm experiencing a problem with the outhole kicker switch on my Whirlwind. In the 1st video (see link below) you can see when the ball drains and enters the outhole trough, it does not trigger the kicker solenoid to kick it back into the ball trough. I ran a "switch edges" test and confirmed when I manually press down the switch the machine doesn't register a signal.

Furthermore, when I ran a coil test, the outhole kicker solenoid seems to work fine as the machine cycles through all the other solenoids. However, when I stop the test on the outhole solenoid to test it repeatedly by itself, it seems to get stuck after the coil fires a few times (see 2nd video linked below ). Not sure if this is related to the switch problem, or maybe a separate issue. I did notice the brown arm connecting to the solenoid seems to look loose and not straight. Should I tighten the nuts above it, or is it supposed to be this way?

Can anyone clue me in on how to fix these issues? This is my first machine, and I'm motivated to learn how to maintain and repair it. Any help is greatly appreciated!

It should be straight. C or E clip on top holding it to the things that kicks.

Check the switch matrix in the manual. Follow the same color wires from that switch around to other switches. A broken wire could be your issue, at a different place.

Be sure the leaf blades on the switch are clean too.

This is what your kicker should look like. Marco Specialties has the parts you need.

your outhole kicker appears to possibly have broken the stud off and maybe a screw with nuts added, it definitely doesn't look right.

in the second video the plunger appears to not be returning to its rest position and you can see it stuck in the coil getting pulsed.

maybe a new outhole kicker arm? https://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/A-6889
and I think it's 1/4 inch, an E clip to hold the bakelite piece in place: https://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/20-8712-25
and if that spring is stretched and/or hacked where it joins at the nuts, you will also need: https://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/10-101-4

I saw this on Marco as well. That's one reason I wondered if my outhole kicker was normal, since it looks different then what I have. Thanks for confirming my suspicions there. I guess I'll be investing in a new outhole kicker...

Thanks for your other suggestions as well @ltg!

That is a very interesting theory re: outhole kicker! I would've never thought of that. I guess that's what I get for purchasing a 33 year old machine

I appreciate your suggestions on a fix. Will be looking into them for sure. Much appreciated @rikoshay!

I think you're right. Found a broken wire down the line from the outhole kicker on the right ramp down switch, which is also having a problem at the end of my first video. Can't be a coincidence. Now to learn to solder...lol

Now to learn to solder...

Youtube has lots of how to videos. Practice with scrap wire and solder at a bench or table. Once you can flow solder move onto your machine.

You'll be good at it in no time.

Definitely, that's the plan! I'm excited to go through this and learn. Appreciate all your help!

For anyone that may stumble upon this thread in the future, resoldering the broken wire I found resolved the issue. My machine is back up and running!
