Since you have gotten these programs to work on a system 7 board, is there any reason why they won’t work on a System 9?
Quoted from pincoder:They might work as-is, but I doubt it. I am currently in the market for a system 9 game so that I can create a set for system 9. How quickly I'm able to adapt the existing code to system 9 depends on how much they actually changed on the board (mainly addresses, sizes, and quantities of PIAs, RAM, CMOS, etc). I believe they went into alphanumeric displays too, so I'd have to write a driver for that.
Is it okay to assume you have a sys9 game? If so, what do you think of the onboard diagnostics? If they're better than these ROMs there might not be any point to keep expanding this project.. Thoughts anyone?
Right now I am dealing with a dead system 9 Sorcerer. I think I may have a reset issue on the board. The onboard diagnostics work ok, unless you are like me and have a locked up board.
I don't think there was a whole lot of difference between the system 7 setup and the system 9 boards in terms of the PIA interface (both use 3). I think the biggest difference is in the memory size, CMOS, and obviously the sound section. However, if you get it to work with system 9, it will also work on System 11. You can actually use a System 11 board in a System 9 game in a pinch.
Ok, I have a firepower that has been modified to run the Firepower Deluxe roms (You can find them here: https://www.pinball4you.ch/okaegi/pro_softfirepowerdeluxe.html ) The machine is running these roms on a system 7 boardset.
I have been chasing a problem with my lamp matrix that I was hoping the pincoder test rom would help me find, as I would be able to run each lamp independently of all the rest.
Since I do a lot of work on system 3 through 7 boards, I went ahead and ordered the combo board from Pincoder adapter board.
I pulled all the rom chips from my board today, and set the dip switches for the lamp test and plugged in the pincoder adapter at IC17 of my system 7 board, with the jumpers set for a 2532 and stacked the board on 3 extensions to clear the crystal next to IC17. I turned the machine back on and... Nothing. I reset the board for the LED test, and still nothing. The on board display reads a 0 with the top led on. Nothing else.
So how do you all suggest I troubleshoot the pincoder adapter chip? Am I doing something wrong here?
The game works fine with the ROM chips I burned for firepower deluxe.
IMG_4365 (resized).jpegThe board is setup for system 7. In fact the base board I am using came out of a Black Knight.
I will have to trace out my adapter board, and make sure the stack is working.
Another question: The directions that come with the adapter seem to indicate that you must run this program with chip 1 of the flipper roms in place. In my case this would be IC20. Is this true?
If this is ineed the case, I may need to burn a rom 1 of the blue flipper roms for system 7 to get this work. Right now I am trying to run the adapter board in IC17 with no other chips on the board.
Edit: Ok, I think I figured out the problem. When I put this System 7 board together several years ago, I did the mod on IC17 to allow for the use of 2732 chips. The pincoder adapter is setup for a 2532. So I am going to have to create an adapter to run the 2532 output to a 2732.
