LOL... AMC are likely the ones who said "you can't use actor assets from the show" ....LOL ...you think they've been "wronged" and are going to "battle"!?!? Are you insane!?!?

then don't agree to the terms and do something else. why make something that doesn't look like what it's suppose to be.
big amc logo everywhere but don't used the actors voice........... WTF is that?

Quoted from judremy:

Stern doesn't do original themes. They were Seg and Data East before that. When did that company last do an original theme?

Data East: Time Machine
Sega: none
Stern: High Roller Casino

Some of Stern's games seem to me to be more or less original themes, but have a license attached to it to draw more attention. Sopranos comes to mind. The objective to make it to the highest ranked mobster is pretty universal and has nothing to do with the theme. Add a few elements that relate to the show and the license is justified. haven't played the game in a while, so i don't know if that game has speech from the original actors.

Mustang is also an original car themed pin in my eyes. None of the modes have anything to do with Mustang or Ford. I see it as an original game that happened to be Ford/Mustang branded. there must be more past games in which the license was only used loosely, while the game itself could also have been a universal theme. As I don't know the TWD show, to me this is just a generic zombie themed game. The music is great, the voicecalls don't bother me either as I have no reference from the TV show.

To me it seems the current code has 2 multiballs integrated and some other basic essential stuff. The rest will be implemented later. Hope it can only get better (and I already like it).

It's called licensing.

Look at "Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean". Translite features Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightly, etc. None of them are in the game. Clearly featuring their character likenesses was part of the licensing, but using their voices was not.

Iron Man has Scarlett Johansson and Samuel L. Jackson prominently featured....neither are even remotely featured in the gameplay AT ALL.

Avengers uses the actors' character likenesses. None of the movie voices are in the game.

This is nothing new. The Walking Dead Pinball LOOKS like The Walking Dead. It doesn't have to stuff the entire literal nature of every season of the show within the game to represent the license.

Quoted from littlecammi:

A lot of you hated Mustang just because of the theme. From the looks of the videos posted here on Pinside, if you play Mustang and then play TWD and you'll fall asleep while playing TWD.

So far Looks to be very true

#105 5 years ago

Love the theme but so far the game looks a bit unremarkable....

#106 5 years ago
Quoted from Jvspin:

It's unfortunate but you may be right. That's one disadvantage of only showing the game when it's all but ready to ship. If there is a huge backlash to some aspect of the game, there is no time to make a major change.
Still, if people make it clear that they're not buying the game due to the lack of call outs from the show, that is something that Stern can enhance later. Would make current buyers happy and would boost sales for the Premium .
We'll just have to see how well the game does or doesn't do and for what reasons.

assuming that there will be an premium at all.. i mean if people are skipping their orders massively because they dont have faith on this game for whatever their reason is.. then i think there wont be an premium at all

Quoted from DutchTommy:

Agreed. It all depends on how successful the game is.

#108 5 years ago

Gameplay vids appear to show sterile play so far IMO. But I know that I need to play one in person to really know if I like it or not. I have done pre-orders before because there was some cool looking toys or new interactive things on the playfield (IE, the spinning disc on Tron that spits out the ball) that made me want to buy it. The only thing I like on this is the title, and that's not enough for me.

When I look at this, I can't help but think how they thought it was time to up the price by $500 for the pro? Zero creativity with new toys/ideas and just the same 'ol, same 'ol bash toys and magnets.

Oh, and the long ramp on the right that looks kind of tough to complete kind of reminds me of the right ramp shot on IM. Hopefully an unsuccessful attempt (reject) does not lead to a drain between the flippers!

#109 5 years ago

Judging by the comments here, the sales projections for this game look a bit dim.

#110 5 years ago

Yes. Plus:
Sega: Derby Daze (http://mirror2.ipdb.org/images/4460/Full_View.jpg)
Data East:Torpedo Alley, Laser War,Checkpoint
Stern:Striker Extreme

I feel the same. I'd like a MM-esque ramp split to prevent a nasty ball backlash...

No, this is the same thing that happens with every game.

Title announced: HYPE FRENZY!

First shitty videos from a trade show or test location with rudimentary code: THIS GAME BLOWS!!!!

People actually play the game with (quasi) finished code: ACTUAL OPINIONS FORM!

Remember....the quick-to-judge hobbyists thought Iron Man sucked at first...they thought Tron sucked at first...they thought AC/DC sucked at first...

Sorry but a code update is not going to save the mechanics of this game.

That's what everyone said about AC/DC, Ironman, etc.

Lyman lyman lyman lyman lyman lyman.

I think it'll be fine. In any case...no reason to get worked up over it. Wait till the game comes out, hopefully you can find one to play. Decide if you like it.

I think anyone who has a strong opinion one way or another about the actual gameplay of this game is nuts. I'll maybe grant the people who've gotten a chance to flip it some leeway, but even they haven't really experienced it yet, it's obviously still raw.

Instead of complaining that Stern releases games 8 months too early just wait 8 months to buy it.

Exactly. Wait for better videos and code updates.

#119 5 years ago

The question I have and someone may have answered this but are there RGB LED's in the pro? In the video 90% of the inserts have no color. I only saw maybe 3 inserts that had any tint? I know a lot weren't lit but they all looked white. If they are RGB's completely ignore what I said and it will be fixed in code

Please..yes we have to play it in order to really cop a feel, yes the code update will greatly improve it, yes the voice call outs updated with actors will also go a long way, but I'm talking about the big zombie that my blind grandma can hit and I'm also griping about the buzz kill floating head toy behind a big prison tower. That's not bashing it just for the heck of it...it's fact, it's right there and it's not changing.

#121 5 years ago

At this point, it looks sort of boring to me. The upper pop bumpers sort of slow down the game play. I know that's the case on several games...just commenting on this one.

I seem to get the feeling from what I've seen of the game that whoever was all involved in making it weren't big fans of the show. I just don't see a lot of connection to the show that would make me want to own it. It does seem like you could have not done the license and just make it generic if you were going to go this route. And the voice is a joke, they have to fix that crap...

My mind is not made up in any way, shape, or form. Not sure why you think that.

And I certainly never said anything about "the mechanics" being good or bad. You know why? Because I haven't played it. You are the one making proclamations like the mechanics can't be fixed...without ever having played the pin.

Rob, it's cool man..you can say what you like and you're free to do so (hint) I play it fast and loose and eat crow later if I'm wrong.

#127 5 years ago

All I know is that if I watched a video of Metallica pro in a well lit room with original code my thought would be this is a bit of a piece of crap, but latest code on a Met Pre with updated magnet board in a dark room loud is the greatest pinball experience I've had in a while so please lets just give TWD 6 months or so before passing judgment. I love it now, just because its dark and a little evil and that match animation makes me all misty inside, awesome.

#128 5 years ago

Did anyone else see Stern's recent reply on Facebook regarding if quotes from the show are in the game? Look's like the announcer guy is here to stay....If they can't use quotes from the show at least get rid of the current announcer and have Steve Ritchie do the callouts. Heck just have him do the same voice from ACDC and it will be awesome!

Only because you aren't paying attention.

Gary Stern even nailed the right ramp shot in one of the first videos ever posted of TWD.

The game looks slow and weak. I'll go pro 3700- 3900 time Christmas.

And THIS is the exact reason for Pinsider crap talking a new release.

Game looks fun. Adult theme like we wanted.
Lots of gore like we wanted.
Zombies are the focus like we wanted.

#131 5 years ago
Quoted from markmon:

Funnily enough I think Gary Stern did. Apart from that video. None.

I have a deposit down on a LE but I'm starting to have second thoughts. That redneck is shocking. No clips from the show. People seemingly unable to hit the ramps. It's got me a little worried.

Perhaps not a "strong" opinion, but after owning 30 pins and just about all of the last Stern titles in the last 5 years, I feel that I can view the gameplay by itself (flow, shots, layout, etc.) and determine if I'm going to personally like it or not. Sure there are exceptions, and code is usually king, but on this one I'm approaching with caution and absolutely will not buy before some good seat time behind it.

Maybe the announcer guy heard in the current videos won't be so bad with a healthy dose of original characters and callouts.

Played this game last night at local club night. First impressions were it was just ok. Nothing too special.

PRISON - Hitting the prison doors a couple of times will trap the ball on the magnet in front of the doors. It will then ask you to clear the prison yard or something like that. All of the major shots will be lit and a pretty ordinary animation of some very blocky zombies will appear on the DMD. As you hit each shot a zombie will be killed. From memory I think you need to hit the zombie head inside the prison doors 6 more times (spelling out the word prison) to start Prison Multiball. Very Metallica Sparkyish. It seemed like the prison wasnt registering shots every time, unless you hit the zombie head dead on with force...
It was quite a tricky shot from the right flipper because of the giant...

WELL WALKER - The well walker toy is too big in my opinion. You hit it 4 times to spell WELL and then you need another 5 hits to start multiball. Probably easier to start this multiball than the prison multiball. I wasnt too sure of what was required during multiball, I dont remember seeing any instructions before multiball began.

MODES - Got a few modes started including CDC and BARN modes but didnt really do much with them. I noticed that during CDC mode hitting the CDC ramp earned 1mil, next shot up the ramp was 2mil... didnt get a third shot so cant say if that pattern continues. I did find that hitting the same ramp/orbit during normal play didnt seem to be rewarded. It appeared to favor combos like hitting CDC ramp, then BARN orbit etc. I guess kind of like during a mode in Star Trek where combos earn you more points.

There are a few tricky shots in the game. Once extra ball is lit (by killing 10 walkers - not sure really how I was doing this. After hitting random shots it would say that a walker had been killed and there were x more to go for extra ball) you need to hit the WOODBURY lane. Seems like trying to hit the scoop in Metallica (which I have trouble with) Ball then travels down into the shooter lane and is shot back up into the pop bumpers.

I found that as the ball was coming down from the pop bumpers it would deflect off the side of the right ramp and drain SDTM.

The right ramp is slightly harder to hit than the left. It is quite a long ramp so your shot needs to be hit with a bit of power. Didnt seem to have any SDTM ball drains if the ball did not make it all the way up the ramp. This applied to both ramps. Ball seemed to either come back to a flipper or occasionally a slingshot. I did enjoy making both ramp shots as the ball goes behind the back of the machine and comes back to the opposite flipper.

I also didnt manage to hit the RIOT shot around the back of the prison often at all.

The dots didnt seem to be very good except the match sequence. There are no animations from the actual tv show but that didnt really bother me. I have found that games like BDK which have animations from the movie/tv show seem to be difficult to make out. There is too much going on. Thats just my opinion anyway.

Flow of the game was pretty good. The only time the ball wasnt moving was when it was locked on the magnet before prison mode started and it did seem to be in the bumpers for quite a while. Having said that the Mustang at the club we play at has the ball up in the bumpers for longer... Angle of the game might have been a bit shallow. Ball wasnt moving around as fast as the Metallica, Star Trek or Mustang on site.

As many have mentioned the callouts are not the best, but I think the music is pretty good. I dont leave the venue with any of the songs or call outs stuck in my head. I still have the song from WhoDunnit stuck in my head a day later...

When you say the well walker is too big, how does it compare to wolverine in x-men?

#139 5 years ago

Havent played Xmen for a long time but I reckon its about the same size? It is more centrally located than Wolverine though and blocks off some shots to the prison from the right flipper

Thanks for the summary nich2pat. I think there was so much built up anticipation for this title that anything short of 'the greatest game ever' was going to cause a fair amount of apprehension or negativity. My initial impression of the gameplay video and comments also left me feeling somewhat disappointed.
At this point, the game looks a bit underwhelming; but hopefully with updated code and for LE models, the extra toys and colour changing LEDs, the pin will shape up nicely.
When I first saw and then played ACDC and MET pros, neither seemed all that impressive. By the time both premiums were released and code was updated (a few times), these pins stood out as two of Sterns best ever released games.
I'm still holding out hope that TWD comes to life and all will be well in the pinball world again.

Glad I did not part with my proto Tz for this if they had call out from the show or original call outs it would be a home run but the dude they got now nooooooooo way !!! Even if they don't have the actors doing cal outs at least get good voice actors to sound some what close to the actors / characters

Wash, rinse, repeat……

I fully expected to see a fully functional and mind blowing coded pin right out of the gate. Didn't everybody?

It's a great looking layout, a great theme, awesome art package and Lyman is developing the ruleset.

Did you really expect mind blowing innovation?

I'm getting exactly what I thought I would be getting at this point. In fact, my expectations have been exceeded so far. I'm thrilled.

The callouts will be fixed, with AMC its not like they are working with Disney or a huge movie company, I'm confident they won't want it to be represented as a piece of shit.

None of the whining and annoying BS has changed my mind or opinion one bit.

For me, I just don't like the Xmen theme, the huge Wolvie clinched it for me. The Well Walker size is my biggest issue but not too concerned about it because of the placement.

Did Lyman do the code for Xmen?

Also, the theme for me is as good as it gets. With my own two eyes i can see enough with the potential of this pin. As the story gets put together here, it will be good enough for me, more than good enough.

A lot of people love Xmen, on theme alone. I'm very satisfied here.

#148 5 years ago

TWD the show isn't so much about zombies, but the characters and their interactions with one another. Since that probably wouldn't fit well into a pinball game it seems like Stern just used TWD as a theme for a zombie action game. Hence we have Big Zombie Hunter I guess....

Rob

#149 5 years ago

Other than idiot redneck call outs I think this game looks, sounds and hopefully plays solid.

I have absolutely no idea what some of the more vocal critics were expecting. This is an early model sent to a show internationally to promote this title.

Of course stern could have had the updated software revision in the game if they didn't want to get spanked for poor implementation; but I like the dots. Alot!

Game has a shit ton of potential.
