Whoa! This is incredible. I've been into Tiki for 20-25 years, and have an entire basement full of tikiphilia! (I think my basement pin collection might be on the gamerooms thread?? I forget).
This is an excellent project. You need some Martin Denny background music!!
BTW, I'm thinking about thinning my tiki mug hoard, if anyone is interested in some mugs, shoot me a pm. I don't have a photo selection available yet, but if enough interest that'll force me into it. Mugs are mostly Orchids of Hawaii varieties.............
-Nate

PM Sent. Been a fan of Tiki since I was a kid (Like a lot of people, it was caused by the Tiki room.) Still waiting to have the space and $$ to build my own lounge in the house or a separate building in the backyard. I have been REALLY wanting to theme my son's room to it, but so far my SO has put her foot down on that

How can I get a Set of 3?!!! I have a Gilligan that needs these! Please PM me when you make more, I'm in, my money is good! Thanks Eric.

Love those

Just saw this thread. Awesome work! Love it. Used to have a Tiki theme in the basement of a prior home. I liked the idea of adding some tiki to POTC that was mentioned early in the thread. May have to play around with that.

The tiki theme is great something new can't wait to see the finished product. i think you need lights behind the eyes to light them up. Have other ideas but its an em pinball so can't add them to it.

#60 7 years ago

Cp1610: Way ahead of you, already have two LED candle flicker kits that are designated for behind the eyes... ?

New photo is 8 hours in on the carving:

Wow, nice job on carving - I wouldn't have the patience!!!

#62 7 years ago

Seeing this makes me think of the hidden temple game show that used to be on tv.

#63 7 years ago

Another 3 hours of carving tonight, and fixed my earlier boo-boo with the tongue...

Not done yet, but got far enough along on the tiki to use it on the backglass for the Let's Play expo in Plano this past weekend...

Long time, but new progress! I'll have better pics from TPF, but heres a few closeups of what I've gotten done lately.

Great idea and well executed! I think this is the way I would go for a re-theme project. Who wants to help (make it) for me? lol

#68 7 years ago

Wow, great progress!! Looks good.

#69 7 years ago

Is that real mother of pearl? Awesome! Looking forward to the TPF pics, I love looking at this pin.

#70 7 years ago

I loved looking at this at TPF. Such a great looking project.

What an incredible piece of art. Fantastic work man, I love it.

Still not dead! I'm VERY lucky to have the assistance of NicoVolta (of "Nic's North American Pinball Tour" thread) to work through all of the mechs. We've done a full refurb on the main board (need to replace one coil, otherwise finished). Next up is a full refurb on the backbox, with the playfield to follow.

TPF 2018, here we come!

#76 6 years ago

Polynesia will be flippin'

Perhaps we should wear Hawaiian shirts, sandals, and be sipping Mai Tai's with umbrellas...

#77 6 years ago

I have debated making Polynesia themed Hawaiian shirts with custom printed fabric for TPF in the past. Considering I should have a vendor booth this year, I'm thinking I need to make it a reality.

Wooo, making the hard push to get Polynesia 100% finished for TPF this year. I am *most* fortunate to have NicoVolta helping me out with a full teardown and restoration of the entire machine (backbox, playfield, and main board), and will be having the playfield clearcoated by Keith Holbrook.

First time seeing this. Super cool.

Just found this thread, excellent work. Your in good hands, the game will be mechanically humming along in no time at all! I am impressed with the woodworking, looks like you have access to a really well stocked shop! Do you do this type of work for a job or is this a hobby for you? Either way this is something cool I would not have imagined existing, thanks!! Super cool.

I've been a picture framer for 30 years, and am a member at the Dallas Makerspace. Gotta love 24/7/365 access to 2 tablesaws, drill press, 4 lathes, disc/belt/drum sanders, router, planer, jointer, and a 5' x10' CNC Multicam router. The 4 laser cutters make doing the veneer marquetry work just a bit easier as well...

Playfield is now sanded, and ready to lay down the new hand painted artwork. Getting the old artwork off was a chore, ended up having to hand scrape the entire thing along with regular heavy application of rubbing alcohol to get the old paper and glue residue off.

Old artwork and paper removed, but soooo much glue residue...
20180111_192358 (resized).jpg20180111_192358 (resized).jpg
Glue all scraped off, and sanded to 120 grit. Ready to laminate on the new paper and start painting in the artwork.

And no, that's not OSB plywood or other icky cheap stuff I'm painting on. It's a sheet
of sugar cane/rice paper laminated on top of the original playfield and lightly sprayed
with shellac. It will be clear coated to a smooth glossy finish after I'm done painting
the designs.

#86 6 years ago

That was my first thought. Chipboard, really?

Rice paper followed by clear is a cool idea, perfectly in theme.

Very cool

#89 6 years ago

Wow- thats a cool idea. Will the paper be as visible when your done or will it fade a bit and clear up with the top coat? Will you see colors on inserts clearly when not lit?

I'm hoping to build up the clear deep enough that the top surface will be physically smooth. Gonna take more than a few layers, but I gave the playfield a good solid coat of shellac and then a run through a vacuum heat press today at my work to lock down the paper fibers. It helped quite a bit, it is much smoother.

The insert colors are only slightly visible on the two green inserts, otherwise they disappear under the rice paper.

This is really cool! And you have some phenomenal skills! Gonna keep an eye on your thread. Good luck moving forward!

And I just noticed that you left the original game name on the playfield in the bottom right. Nicely done!

Looks great! How do you handle the inserts? Do you spot clear those once you have them in?

#96 6 years ago

The inserts are already in, they're under the sugar cane paper. Can't see them until they're lit.

#97 6 years ago

if they are in in those photos, then they aren't level with the top of the play-field and are crystal clear with no refraction?

#98 6 years ago
Quoted from Hardsuit:

Freaking cool, can you throw a flashlight under the pf to show off the effect?

#99 6 years ago

Very nice! Love the theme, I am a big fan Tiki' s as well!! Although you have me beat by a mile with all the tiki decorations!!

I think those holes are for roll over discs
