My Simpsons Pinball Party had a sound problem, so swapped in a new Rottendog MPU board. But it seems I've traded one issue for another.

Now the bottom right flipper is not working. The upper right flippers still work fine. All flippers were working fine with the original board.

I've checked:

- The flipper coil works fine in test.
- The right flipper button doesn't work in the test menu, or register in switch test. So looks like a switch problem.
- I've checked the switch with a multi-meter and it's good. The wiring looks fine.
- The second stage in the cabinet switch tests OK, hence the upper right flippers working fine.

Seems the problem is with the switch not registering with the MPU board. Possible I have a fault on the new Rottendog board? What's the likelihood of that?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Your EOS switch is broken but I don't know if that would cause the flipper to not work

Yeah I did notice that. I think the EOS switch is only there to assist in maintaining power when a ball hits the flipper at force. The flipper worked fine before as is.

Because the flipper switch is not registering in test and the flipper coil works, I think I have an issue with the switch talking to the MPU board. So its either a wiring issue (don't know how, when nothing changed in the cabinet when swapping MPU boards) or the new Rottendog board has an issue....hmm

Highly likely from what I read on here. RD boards have patchy/sketchy problems quite often.

Damn, I hope not. The board was purchased from the UK and I'm in New Zealand.

I guess as a final testing measure, I can swap the old board back in to see if the flipper works again.

Thinking about this, would testing the pins on the MPU board directly give me the ultimate answer?

I.e.

1. Machine turned off
2. Removing the connector on CN6
3. Connect wires to pins 1 and then pin 4 (see image). Electrical tape on the rest.
4. Power on machine
5. Touch wire ends and the flipper switch 'should' activate?

This would tell me if the board is accepting a closed switch or if I have a wiring issue.

That test is valid, but you've over complicated it.
All you need is a jumper wire with a clip on one end.
Clip the lead to CN6, pin 4.
Make sure the other end isn't touching anything.
Power on.
Start a game.
Touch the other end of the wire to the backbox metal.
Flipper should fire.

Thanks Chris, I'll try this tonight and report back

Tried the wire from Pin 4 to the backbox plate, did nothing. Starting to look like the new board has a problem.

Will now swap the roms back to the original board and see if flipper works again....urgh

This is now resolved

For anyone who has a similar problem in the future:

See attached pic, the resistor lead had been soldered at the factory to the via pad right next to it, shorting that pin and giving weird readings with the meter.

My dead flipper issue is now fixed. I had to pay a tech to diagnose and repair which was a bit frustrating with a brand new board. But the game is now running again.

Well done finding that issue - the techs bill was well earned.

That is one of the things I dislike about those boards.
I've seen that before.

With those leads bent over like that the saw (or whatever removal device is used) can't reach them. I bend the leads over to hold the device in until soldered but I'm not doing the entire board.

Since you said the board is repaired, your picture is before the repair. Otherwise there is a vacant thru hole below the yellow circle and what looks like a cold solder joint to the right of it.
