What stage did you go with?

Stage 1 is really all it needed. The playfield wasn't in bad condition to begin with.

Let me know if you need any pics of anything if you get stuck during the rebuild. My LW3 is 'minty' and unmodified so should be a good reference.

Awesome! Thank you sir. I will keep that in mind as I rebuild her. If you look at the first pics you can see how many missing parts I had to begin with.

Looks like it is really coming along great, I can't wait to see how it progresses. Keep up the awesome restoration work!

That's pretty incredible! I'm a little shocked at the long haul, did you take on another project or was it just life? I was browsing like "this resto thread started a year ago and suddenly jumps to only a month ago!"
The pictures and progress from where you stopped and then picked up were so perfect I didn't even notice that a year passed! I had to double check the time stamps!

That LW3 looks incredible, I love the red and black! What is that little red box on the inner right?

Ha! Yeah this has been stretched out awhile. but you are right I did have other projects come up and life but I have committed to myself to have this ready for this years TPF. Fingers crossed!!

The red box is the Power Input box assembly. It's where the power comes in and the power rocker switch is under it as well as the volume control.

I had to solder a new fuse clip on the flipper board. It was cracked and wouldn't hold a fuse.

The shooter micro switch bracket had a lot of rust on it. Refinished it and it looks better now.

Love the touches of red inside the cabinet! I'm going to do that in my next resto.

I think LW3 is really an underated machine and for the price you can find them at its a great deal. I love mine and its not going anywhere anytime soon, if ever.

I agree, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

Nice cabinet! how far are you going to push it?
Will you make the "Lethal" "Weapon" decals for
your gun assembly?

I had thought about it. I reproduced the original decal that goes on the side but didn't like the look of it. I will probably do a custom design that fits better with the theme. The original decal sucks looks like an after thought.

Installing the cards in the back box. I had to order new third party boards because as you can see from the first pictures the game had most of them missing. I did have an OEM PPB board but there were several burned connectors. I decided to buy an XPIN board for now and send off the OEM board for repair. I will probably replace it sometime in the future.

Quick question...should I put spacers under the boards to "float" the boards off the back panel or should I just screw them down as normal? I am trying to eliminate (reduce) the curse of the Data East speaker hum. What are your thoughts on this?

#74 7 years ago
Quoted from TxJay:

On my game, the speaker hum is directly related to the DMD driver board and
the lamp strobe circuitry.

Curious, do you have OEM boards in your machine? And, do you have LEDs in your strobes? Just wondering if there is any difference in using LEDs over incandescent lamps.

#76 7 years ago

My game is all OEM, no mods.

#77 7 years ago
Quoted from vec-tor:

Okay, interesting. I wonder if changing to LEDs would reduce the hum at all.

#78 7 years ago

I just have the board mounted and the screws are loosened enough to make sure it doesnt fall off. That reduced mine a good amount.

Just realized that you dont live far from me. lol. You bringing this LW3 to pinfest this year?

That is the plan...may have to take some PTO from work to meet that deadline. I assume you are coming as well to TPF? Hopefully you will be able to get some play time on it that weekend.

I'll be an exhibitor once again this year, yes. I'll check it out of course. I haven't decided which machines to bring yet.

So when I bought this pin it did not have a speaker panel. After a bit of searching I found a panel and most of the parts that go with it. One of the things I could not find were the speaker grill covers. But even then I did not like the looks of them. They didn't really go with the rest of the cabinet now.

So after some searching I found Marcos had a set of Baywatch grills. I bought them and customized them to fit my pin

Does anyone in the Dallas area happen to have a rotisserie that they currently aren't using that I could possible borrow for a bit? I would hate to have to build one for just this build but if I have to I will. Thought I would at least ask.

You may want to post on this thread https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/vids-quick-and-dirty-rotisserie-guide?tu=minnpin or maybe post it as a new topic. I'm sure you won't have a hard time finding one to borrow.

Beautiful work. You'll end up having one of the nicest LW's ever.

Good idea.I will give that a shot.

Thank you. It's been a lot of work. I hope it turns out as well as I see it in my head.

I would love a rotisserie too, but sadly haven't made one yet. My alternative has been these C-clamps from harbor freight. They are over a foot long and I put one on each corner of the playfield. It keeps the PF off the ground gives me the abilty to slide underneath it to do work as if it were a car. Or just put some clamps in the reverse to where the extensions are above the top of the PF and then you can just flip it over. I'll post some pics of previous project to give you an idea....

Yeah, I may have to go that route. Thanks for the idea.

Well after no replies from anyone offering their rotisserie for me to borrow I decided to just buy the parts and build one for myself. Once I am done with it you are more than welcome to use it.

Cut the new wood (red oak) for the side rails. No way I could put that horrible pine wrapped in vinyl back on the machine.

I might be getting a Lethal Weapon 3 this summer (maybe if the deal comes through) and im looking forward to start modding it like you have done to yours. Anyway, i was wondering, are there any other gun handles you can get instead or is it possible to mod that original one? (like maybe making it look more like a gun?)

Not sure, but I would try the Last Action Hero gun handle. Wouldn't know why it should not work, especially since they are both DE games.

You could always paint it to make it look more like a real gun, but I completely understand your wanting to change the gun. I haver berm a fan of that one. I had thought about using a gun from an Indiana Jones pin or a Dirty Harry. Those are much better looking. If you are planning on refinishing the cabinet anyways you could make either of those would work I bet. As another person also suggested you could even try a Last Action Hero gun as well.

Yeah, the game is based and named after "Lethal Weapon" which have guns all over, but they made the handle look derp anyway.
