Quoted from SkitBPinball:

Here's a full size scan view of the preliminary artwork. Not to the extreme res that we need, of course, but it is large enough for those of you who weren't at expo to get a nice look at. You can see a lot of it is sort of "patch-worked" on there, which obviously won't be on the final product.

Adjustments are happening very quickly. I woke up to this on my phone this morning:

Holy crap! That's awesome!! The colors and textured are way more consistent with the awesome job on the rest of the playfield. Thanks for posting the latest full playfield pic as well - it's higher res really shows off James' skill in color, variation, texture, etc.

Quoted from hAbO:

The red skull wasnt bad but the new skull totally rocks! Love the extra detail.

I personally liked the red skull a lot, as I thought the art could use a bit more color in that area and, looking at the stills from the show itself, the skulls he pulls are exactly that color. I do agree, though, that in practice, the coloring does look a little "off."

It's not widely known to anyone who wasn't at the expo that we brought some finishing artists on board recently, and this is the turnaround we're quickly becoming accustomed to. The two recently-added artists were on hand at the show on Saturday and heard lots of comments and suggestions right there at the booth. So the longest it could have taken to get this redone skull is about two days.

With that in mind, I urge you to take a look at the playfield posted above and voice all concerns now. We have to send this out to get a proper print on a real playfield very soon! Some things to note, first:

The skull is obviously being addressed.
Detail is going to be added to the huts up top.
Empty space, even in the upper center, won't be seen due to population.
UV layer isn't being shown yet.
Anna will likely be added shortly.
Dutch will be moving down to accommodate the light-lock insert position.
There will likely be much more foliage by the end of the project.

#3453 9 years ago

Not a huge deal but can Dutch have his delts/shoulders evened out?

#3454 9 years ago

I really hope you have jungle foliage plastics that layer up and over the ramp giving some depth to back of the playfield.

#3455 9 years ago

Fix the shoulder! Love it Kevin!!!!

(2 cents on a topper, if the unhelmeted one is offered, as you mention, from another vendor,
ask if he can make them with light, (eyes?) and some wire leads out the back.)

Where will the pony be going on the playfield?

Ok, somebody with a little insight, please help me on this. What is wrong with the shoulder? I don't get it, and I need to pass this information along detailed.

Change the colour of Predator's hand holding the skull. Maybe something of a darker shade. Looks wrong the colour it is now.

Add some blur to the chopper blades.

the left side of his shoulder when looking at PF looks too small. Also looks to me like right side and left side are trying to show him at differenr angles if that makes any sense.

Yeah, something is odd with that hand. It lacks some detail too.

I do remember one of the skulls being absolutely coated with blood in the movie. I'm indifferent though. Modders will be able to paint and detail their skull toy a variety of ways.

Sounds great....especially the "much more foliage"!

Overall I feel like I love the playfield more than most, but some things I would love to see altered:

-Some sort of motion blur on the Helicopter blades.
-Dutch's shoulders or general pose altered to look more natural
-A little more foliage on Jesse Ventura's left to cover that the rest of his gun is missing
-Slight darkening of the background colors. Not out of control but just a slight adjustment.

Really, you guys are hitting it out of the park. The fact you let us have input like this is amazing. Thanks again!

Different skull.

So I passed around the link at work to get some other opinions.

Only a couple of points... other then it looks sweet lol.

Arnold:
His peck shading is kinda off. The shading looks like his pecks are being spread out. Also the outside of his right arm needs some more shading to define it as its more in shadow.

Right helicopter:
The left helicopter looks sweet. The perspective is kinda off on the right one and it doesn't have the same awesome lightened areas as its twin.

Pred's skulls:
The skulls the pred is wearing don't have the same awesome detail as the others on the middle/Left side of the PF. They dont really need blood, but some more wear/cracks would help make them look less bland white.

Pred's hand:
I think its good it just could use some more detail. It looks kinda flat as it is.

General:
More foliage is needed, but i have a feeling i wouldn't have the same opinion if it was in a populated cab so....

Truthfully I have been staring at it with my coworkers for a while just trying to find things that could be changed.... not an easy task. Honestly, If the art didn't change much at all i would still be happy. I like the art and i think James is doing a great job! Keep up the good work! Just some spots for more trained eyes to look at.

To me, it seems his body is twisted in an unnatural way where his back shoulder is back so far that on top of perspective it is being hidden a bit by the rest of his body. It makes him look like that guy who only works out on one side of his body in Lady in the Water. phpThumb_generated_thumbnailjpg.jpeg

I like the playfield art. Since you guys are looking for input, if it where me, id go even more blood and guts everywhere for a r-rated machine. Just give everything a good splattering. But im very happy regardless.

Here is a quick PS of the issue (and easy fix) showing the shape and perspective of the deltoid muscle (with Arnold twisting his upper left shoulder essentially out of the PF, his deltoid will have a much broader shape in the front of him instead of behind him). It's a very minor tweak, but it makes the body shape agree a lot more with the perspective he is posed in.

This is the original:

Here is the edited version making his shoulder have the correct perspective/shape:

Hi,

In terms of the artwork, if possible if you can update Arnold's rifle it appears off compared to the minigun. Here is a pic and more info on the rifle he used in the movie.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cSWHytubBHs/UPMV3QL4RQI/AAAAAAAAAtc/u171gTyXznc/s1600/predator-1987-03-g.jpg

http://www.imfdb.org/wiki/Predator#Fake_39mm_M203_Launcher

Basically a M16 with a M203 grenade launcher, note the updated hand guard. If you need a picture from a different angle PM me and I'll take a picture for you to reference.

Note: Main items that appear off to me are (1) missing front sight (2) hand guard shape (3) flash hider is just a cylinder.

Not sure if you can easily fix it but the alignment of the carry handle/rear sight to the rest of the rifle is off also.

Thanks!

Kevin,

You need to add a picture of your new puppy somewhere in the playfield or at least in the DMD somewhere obscured of course.

In the movie, the Predator used some sort of galactic goo gone to make the skulls and they were basically bleached white.

He used a grinder. I put the before and after pics up a few pages ago. Since this thread is running like wildfire, I don't see a reason not to throw them up again.

Before. Immediately after ripping it from Billy's back. (Which I think is the extra ball animation. AWESOME.)

Dillon, Does not look like Carl Weathers that much to me(but can figure it out ) , I seen no one else say anything so it must be ok . But looks like a smile of a clown image on his left cheek ,I know it is hard to draw people of color as most portraits and Statues often do not look like whom they are to represent . Awesome work . Much respect for the constant replies you at Skit-B take the time to do when not working on this project . Keep up the great work and thanks

#3484 9 years ago

This is fantastic. It may have been addressed, but the maybe the explosions seem to "Saturday morning cartoony", am I being to critical?

#3485 9 years ago
Quoted from SkitBPinball:

That's right. The two stand-ups on Predator are used for lighting locks, so they are super important, but you have to be really ready for some ball-saving if you're going to contest with them. It's a risk vs reward thing. Predator has been designed to reward good shots with controlled returns, but if you're looking for a solid score, you're going to have to battle with those center targets at some point or another

Quoted from SkitBPinball:

Somewhat related, this is why I said "no toy bashing" either. Pardon my language straight away, but I f*ckin HATE being punished for making a shot in a pinball game.

So I really don't want to open the wound (and my condolences on your BSD loss), but like BSD will there be alternate shots (similar to the big ramp in BSD) which when hit continually allow you to light locks (i.e. big ramp shots = castle lock)?

#3486 9 years ago

Kevin, really glad you are taking feedback. I don't want to sound as if I am putting down the artwork. It looks very good. But if I was to say anything, as others have said the shape of Arnold's sholders are both off a little, maybe his right side is too small and his left side is too big. I understand his perspective is that his left side is facing us so it's slightly closer and thus maybe bigger. But to me it's over sized on the left, like he's a hunchback(shoulder).

My other main area that I don't like is that his pecks (chest) is very over lined (like a washboard). I understand that this can be shown in body builders (low body fat so the muscle fibers are seen) but to me it's not really normal especially in a more natural stance (I mean he's not flexing his muscles or lifting weights.) I think his chest area should be more smooth.

Here is a more natural pic of a chest (a muscular chest).

#3487 9 years ago

I think maybe his right shoulder needs to be sloped on more of a downward angle. Right now it is almost out at a right angle then comes straight down. If you look at the pic from the movie, it slopes down right from his trap.

It starts at the top by his neck and is just one big curve down, not out then down.

Quoted from luvthatapex2:

If you overlay the new skull on the old red one, its a marked improvement! Well done!
I hope this was the intent for the new artwork ... here is what it could look like.

Oh wow, that skull looks fantastic. I feel like instead of the blue, just have the bottom of the playfield the same shade of green and then just fade the green up going darker green as you go up the playfield and then into the black. I think that would go great with the jungle brush on the rest of the playfield.

#3489 9 years ago

I agree, that Dillon does not look like Carl Weathers (looks like John Amos) and agree his left cheek looks funny. I also noticed his eyes are crossed. I mean his right eye is looking at his nose and his left eye is looking straight ahead.

#3490 9 years ago

I would agree that most of the likenesses resemble who they are supposed to be, but Dillon does not.

#3491 9 years ago

Shape of Arnold's left shoulder a bit off and too big IMO. Image posted by spfxted above has a much different more natural shape to it. An artist should be able to identify it. New skull looks great big improvement IMO. Love the idea of adding more foliage To make it more jungle like darkening the background color/tone would also be an improvement. Man I am getting so excited to see this beast come together. Best of luck on the home stretch Skit-b.

Your response to customers feedback is absolutely unheard of and very much appreciated!

#3492 9 years ago

I figure I will be looking at this playfield for the rest of my life so Im really stoked that your asking our opinions and listening. Too cool. I love the all the jungle art- so appropriate and spot on. Also love the characters overall, especially Billy. Nailed his glare perfectly. Carl Weathers character appears a little high and chunky in the left cheek-just my first thoughts.
The huts....ok lets talk about the huts. I admit I find them a little too-cartoonish. I realize once the playfield is populated appearances will change but still... any chance on maybe adding the dude that Arnold nailed with the machete or knife or whatever? Seeing him pinned up there to the side of one of the huts would be cool. Overall, Im pleased...sweet looking pin so far. I am very excited to be a part of all of this. Thank You SkitB!

#3493 9 years ago

New skull is awesome! I have to agree about Dillon too doesn't quite look like him.

#3494 9 years ago

Nice improvements all around. I like Kevin prefered the bit of red or color on the skull but majority rules. My wish list is basically echoed by others but I wanted to emphasize the rework of the gun, the artist needs to re-draw the rifle with the front sight added in. Of course bonus points if he can make the handle look right. I also agree with the stacking of plastics at least near the back to give it a feeling of jungle canopy cover. Last point is with the uv art, this could really make the pf something extraordinary. I think it should be a different scan all together rather than lighting up what's already there, yes perhaps blood splatter all over the field and finally revealing the pred's face without helmet. Hopefully the ramps will glow in that environment along with some key plastics for a totally different playing enviroment. Again thanks for allowing us to sound off.

Ps: there is no way I'm putting that ugly Mofo's head as a topper on my pin. So I hope we can have the helmeted laser sighted pred instead.

Quoted from playboywillis:

Also, whoever guessed that the skull would be where the ball dropped out of way back when we first saw it, Nice guess.

Seemed like the only reasonable place

All I can say is this:

Damn, I glad I'm in on this cool machine!

#3497 9 years ago

Gosh DAMN I would love to see another full game video. That last one is still badass. Can't wait to see the DMD work.

#3498 9 years ago

Here is another screen cap of a VP table made from the latest updates - predator holding skull, insert lettering and skull ramp to give you an idea of what it might look like lit up. Not sure if there will be a hanging guy on each bumper, if not I can take 2 off

I love the red at the bottom of the playfield. I would love if the artwork would incorporate more blood in those areas.

I think the LED lighting is going to give you alot of red glow in that area.
