BDYETP 34: David Thiel: Pinball audio from Q*Bert to Pirates

Since 1980, David has created interactive audio packages for 28 pinball machines, from Gottlieb’s Q*Bert’s Quest in 1983 to Jersey Jack Pinball’s Pirates of the Caribbean in 2018. Today, he’s working on projects currently in development with pinball startup Deeproot Pinball. David takes us on a journey through his career, from the early days of audio programming to today.

Great show guys, really enjoyed hearing you cut loose, especially Nick (who I agree completely with regarding Gomez games).

Can I mention an audio production issue? You guys both have great, resonant voices, but Kevin, in your case, you have a tendency to low-talk half of what you're saying. It's frustrating to me because I listen in my car while driving on the highway, and if I crank up the audio too much, Nick comes back blowing my ears off. Can you apply some kind of compressor/limiter inline to balance your level better? It's a common thing in the radio DJ biz, and I wouldn't be surprised if Nate does that (being a sound dude, in both senses of the word). Or just stop muttering into your collar!

Also, don't be too down on Buffalo. I've been there a few times to do some pinball deals and it's a decent scene, there are some cool places to eat, and my wife really liked hitting some of the estate sales. I'm not a big city person so Buffalo meets expectations reasonably well. Now, the Bills, that's another story...

    BDYETP Munsters review in short:

    Kevin: "It's pinball."

    Nick: "Doesn't interest me."

Hmmm ... Pirates or Munsters ... Pirates or Munsters ... which would the Bro Crew pick?

    #159 4 months ago

To be fair, these were Munsters first impressions, not an official review--but still, I think we've made the choice there pretty obvious over the past few episodes

    #160 4 months ago

Fair point and duly noted. Just givin' you guys a friendly jab.

Actually, the prior collective Buffalo Pinball videos and expressed opinions were a factor in me cancelling my Munsters LE order and purchasing a Pirates LE instead. So ... thanks!

That was great show, Nick and Kevin. I liked the hot takes segment! Lots of genuine honesty there and good insights. I was particularly interested in your commentary on Spooky's Alice and was disappointed to hear your ultimate conclusions... not that I think you guys were off the mark... but because I was hoping you'd ultimately say that concerns about it being a bit of a brick-fest are unfounded. Alas, that doesn't appear to be the case. That's a real bummer, because the game has a really appealing look to my eyes (despite the fact that I don't like Alice Cooper as an act .

And Thunderbirds... ugh. What a disaster!!

Anyhow, keep up the quality pinball content! The polish you guys put on your production is really impressive.

Btw, Nick, I'm guessing you have a PB-3000? I've got roughly 500lbs of subs in my HT room... so I totally get your desire to get it right. If you ever want to talk HT, shoot me a PM.

Yes! I ended up going with the PB-3000, even if it's hard to notice a huge difference with the 2000. I'm really digging SVS subs.

Would be cool to see pics of your setup.

I write in the industry - review a lot of gear. Fun stuff. The folks at SVS are super passionate about their brand. Last year I reviewed a 7.2.4 Dolby Atmos system comprised of their Ultra Speakers and dual SB16 subs. Loved it so much, I bought it!

That 3000 you have is a legit sub. If you really want to kick the bass experience into high gear, it’s best to have two. With the right placement, you can get a much more even response. Nevertheless, one of those monsters is good stuff! Not sure if you’ve played around with the tuning of ports... but might consider closing one or both and seeing if the repose changes to your liking.

Really enjoyed the podcast this month, guys. I know 90s game have been discussed at length, but it was fun to get a fresh run down - just so happens that Johnny is one of my favorites, also. I’ve owned one for 6 years and still enjoy it... although, getting to power down isn’t exactly difficult on factory. But, getting a great score in the process isn’t exactly easy.

So many fun titles from that era — two in my collection that get less broad love: JackBot and Indy 500. Both really fun games... JackBot is one that hits it for me.

Also - spot on commentary about deep root. The reading of the letter and accompanying comments: hilarious and sobering!!

Anyhow, caught the download before heading on vacation. Made for fun late night listening when my wife and kids crashed early!
