Good morning/evening Pinsiders!

Many of you probably remember the PinVision Interactive Backboard Display that we released for Twilight Zone back in September. The demand was completely overwhelming. We started shipping those in November, and many of you voted us for the Best Pinball Mod in the 2020 TWIPY awards. We are still very very humbled!

Fast forward, and after months of research and development, tweaking and improvements, we’re elated to announce our next game!

We bring you the PinVision Interactive Backboard Display for TRON. This mod features a fully interactive and immersive 15.6” HD display on the back of the playfield with HD videos for each mode. TRON fits the mold for this mod perfectly as it's a very visual theme.

All animations were designed professionally by the award winning Stephen J. Silver. He has done a ton of work in and out of the pinball industry for Multimorphic, the Houston Arcade Expo and much much more.

To be clear, this mod is not a ColorDMD alternative. This is more or less a completely immersive/interactive wallpaper. The system knows exactly what mode you’re in and features HD animations and “heads up” graphics for each mode.

* Flynn’s Arcade
* Extra Ball
* Disc Multiball
* Disc Multiball Jackpots
* End of Line Multiball
* Portal Multiball
* Portal Jackpots
* ZUSE
* Portal Multiball
* Light Cycle Multiball
* Light Cycle Jackpots
* Terminate CLU
* TRON Targets
* Attract Mode

As with our other mods, everything is completely customizable. Just take the Micro SD card out of the unit, place it into your computer, and all modes/animations are organized into folders. Dropping one or multiple videos into a folder will cause the system to pick one at random when the given mode occurs. These units are compatible with ALL TRON models!

Each kit comes with the following:
* Display Controller & Game Sensing Card
* 15.6” display panel
* Wooden replacement back panel with digitally printed TRON-esque artwork/plastic shield to match your game
* Display power, HDMI and data cables
* Fully loaded & preconfigured SD card that’s ready to go

*** Pricing & Availability ***
The price is $499 for everything.

The deposit to get in line is $200

As we scale up, these help us get better lead times with our suppliers which is crucial during these times.

Shipping is expected to be in September. We have prototype units going out to testers in our beta program currently just to make sure our installation instructions and hardware are all that they need to be.

*** How to get one ***

Slots can be reserved on our website at https://86pixels.com/product/pinvision-for-tron/ - A portion of all proceeds will go back to Pinside for running such a great community here.

Once we reach general availability, we’ll have them available in our Pinside shop as well!

We gotcha! You're actually the second by about 10 seconds according to my email.

We appreciate the excitement we're getting for sure!

Wow! Great job

Thank you kindly!

Tell me about it! Thankfully between our beta testers and some very gracious local pinheads, we were able to get a hold of an LE to build and test on.

#6 2 years ago

Holly Wow! Tron values just went UP! Well done as always just amazing!!!!!

#7 2 years ago

Ordered! I’m in!

I think your "player's perspective" in the video is off, unless the cameraman is 7 foot tall. It's making the screen look very washed out in that part of the video (because LCD viewing angles typically suck). Also, the screenshot with it laid out like Jack/Pot irritates me, because that's not two words. Yes, it's a nitpick.

If this came out 8 years ago it would've sold thousands. Now people have spent thousands on mods already and this mod is going to require them to remove the Lightcycles off the ramps...no doubt some will prefer this, but if I still had EITHER of my Trons, I think I'd have a hard time making that choice to remove the lit hallmark ones or not. Less of a difficult decision if still running stock!

Quoted from Yelobird:

Holly Wow! Tron values just went UP!

I doubt that, for the reason above, and also, while Tron is the most likely game to recover your money in mods....at some point there's a limit. Pros are already going for NIB LE prices. That's ridiculous, regardless of how many mods are on it. Stern is the biggest bunch of morons known to man for not trying their hardest to get the license back and re-run the game at this point. They'd be charging 5600 or whatever for a Pro without any of the 'new expensive tech', making 1200 free bucks on each game due to "pinflation" from the last 10 years.

COMPY IS BACK!!! Now we need this game to get vaulted so I can get one!

Thanks, we've got you as well! Feel free to forward any questions along, we know you'll love it!

We design mods with Todd McCullough in mind! Yeah, it's a bit high now that you mention it.

Good eye, these still look good even with the Light Cycle mods. We designed the viewing area to account for those where possible as well. We'll shoot some video with those installed.

Thank you for being sage counsel on this!

Hey Compy , it looks like it’s another ball out of the park! I just signed up for one.

#12 2 years ago

Release day!

#13 2 years ago

Many thanks for all of the hard work you're doing on this mod! You have a true talent. (And if anyone hates the animations, I'm so glad it's your fault!

Thanks a ton! We're so excited to get this into your hands. The good news is that we've got all of the electronics required for this one so we're ahead of any supply constraints on that side.

#15 2 years ago

I'm in!!

Thanks Jimmy and Stephen.

TOTALLY pumped

“Blame Sponge” is the top line of my resume! Come on, everyone! Buy this and you can be mad at me online!

#17 2 years ago

Sjsilver , from what I’ve seen the animations look great! I know a lot of time and effort has gone into this. It’s gonna be greatly appreciated by all us Tron freaks!

#18 2 years ago

I'm definitely in. I also have the Total Lightshow ramp light mod on mine, is this kit compatible with that? The TLS kit taps into the switch and lamp matrix to detect modes and if this does the same I'm just wondering how to install them together?

#19 2 years ago

Ordered, thanks!

#20 2 years ago

Awesome! I love the depth it creates in the back. Perfect mod for this game.

#21 2 years ago

Freaking awesome! Quorra here I come baby! Ordered!

#22 2 years ago

Message to Compy: Very cool, but I don't own a Tron. Please review the list of pins in my collection and restrict your next several PinVision Interactive Backboard Display mods to games on that list.

#23 2 years ago

This is massively cool!

#24 2 years ago

Unfortunately I don't own either TZ or Tron or I would be in, but I was wondering about the viewing angle for a 6' to 6'-4" player? If there is truly some LCD washout, would it not be possible to somehow incorporate a few degrees of angle into how you mount these panels?

Yeah, it is indeed possible. We did the same for TZ on ours as the brackets could be angled backward.

I can say at least three of your games are on our list! Otherwise, alright, guess I've gotta get busy!

littlecammi and I have 9 games in common. Compy, how many games are potential for my collection?

I will gladly relocate the light cycles mod to have this mod. Light cycles don’t do squat for me.

Also not seeing the Recognizer in the pics/vid.

Very cool mod... just would like to see with cycles & Recognizer in place and/or relocated maybe.
LE model has a moving Recognizer, doesn't it? Isn't the LCD going to block that arm, and therefore the whole thing need to be removed?
(Maybe I missed it.)

#30 2 years ago

Really terrific work Jimmy! This exudes style from its core! Is there any way to retain the 2 back panel blue flashers that get removed when adding the new panel? Maybe they were making the install difficult? It would be a pity to lose those.

I'm designing replacement flasher PCBs for that actually! Agreed that they add a lot!

The recognizer is installed on the old backpanel and was removed when we replaced it with the LCD back panel. There was no way to install the recognizer because the LCD glass was in the way. We're investigating a way to put the recognizer back in, however.

We do not patch into the LEDs or switch matrix, so you should be 100% compatible!

Are these made with TN or IPS panels? The "players perspective" angle looks like the image is whitewashed a bit. Other than that, this looks like a bad ass product!

#36 2 years ago

This is a terrific mod, Congrats !

How long does it takes to boot-up on power reset ?

One of our company's core areas is operating system design for other pinball companies. As such, we boot into the attract mode in about 6 seconds, which is even faster than our TZ mod as displayed here (

)

Don't tell my wife I used our kitchen for production/testing while she was on vacation last year.

Thanks and welcome to the club! We're ordering more parts now!

We use 15.6" IPS display panels for these. We'll adjust the brightness a bit and shoot some different angles so we can be completely up front about it!

I really appreciate the refreshing honesty here, even though I'm not a potential buyer. Maybe in the future...who knows. I'm still sitting on a new Tron playfield....

Quoted from kklank:

So you bought for gameplay rather than theme then. Okay? That's perfectly fine.

*edit* The positioning of the cycles is pretty generic really...they could probably be moved to other parts of the ramp that are less obtrusive to this mod if someone were really inclined to do it, assuming there's clearance. I can't remember if there's a flange of extra plastic where they are or if they're just drilled into the normal ramp edge width.

ahh! I was trying to figure out why it looked so odd.

Good evening!

Answering a few questions that have been asked on our website, emails, DMs etc so it might help the next few:

1. Do I have to remove my recognizer in order to use the display system?
If your game has a fixed (non oscillating) recognizer unit, absolutely not. We just replace the backboard assembly. If you have a moving backboard unit, yes, the recognizer is removed with it (it's part of the same assembly). For that, we're researching two options: a) mounting your recognizer assembly in a fixed location so it's still there, and b) a moving/interactive motor assembly that mounts in front of the display.

2. What about my lightcycles?
Our mod can still function very well with the Hallmark Light Cycles in front, but we're also designing alternate brackets so that they can be moved farther to the sides for those that wish to keep them out of the way.

3. How does the mod get power?
Our mod takes 12V in from any source. We ship it with a power brick and cabling for the service outlet. However we know some people might already have something there, so our mod can also be powered outside of the game from the wall if needed. The circuitry is still designed to switch on and off when 5V is detected from the game's power supply, so you never have to worry about it constantly running.

4. Can I add more videos?
YES! Once you insert the mod's MicroSD card into your computer, you can drop multiple videos into any folder (organized by mode) and the system will pick one at random each time.

5. I have a set of TRON side blades that I want this to match, can you make some to match mine?
We have not run all of the plastic prints yet, so I'm doing several design options so that you can choose which one you want when your unit is about to ship. I'll post pictures here once they come in!

Thank you for the overwhelming support! We've ordered more parts and are busy assembling/testing things! We can't wait to ship this out to everyone!

Keep the questions coming. They all help us build a better product!

Am I reading that a) the intent is to mount this into a fixed position so that it no longer moves? Or b) keeping the moving part functional by mounting on the front of the display?

#45 2 years ago

Color me intrigued here... While I understand how the mod for TZ works (tapping on sound commands), I must say I did not expect this to come to Tron, since the sound board is pretty much highly integrated. So geek in me does beg to know how it works...

Only rationale explanation I have is that you're using DMD grab and interpreting DMD data to trigger game modes.

Either way, may I suggest that you add a communication bus (I2C for ex) with an option to send I2C commands to external arduinos based on gameplay ? That would give potential to additionnal mods

#46 2 years ago

My guess is that the "Game Sensing Card" piggyback's onto the MPU similar to Eli's ramp lights, at the ribbon connector J9 on the top left of the MPU. I'm sure Jimmy will get some pictures of how it's done when ready.

#47 2 years ago

Remove light cycles… remove recognizer… and for that reason…

Really looking forward to seeing these options. I love how my side art integrates with the current backbox art, so this will make it all systems go as far as I'm concerned. I have a pro so I won't have to worry about a moving recognizer, and I'm tall enough that I can still see the back area even with the Hallmark cycles on there. Thanks for listening to feedback and providing choices!

If so that would be an interesting development. I've not hooked up my logic analyzer to this bus, as my understanding based on the schematics was that it was a control bus for the power board, and therefore would not reflect the game status. But I could be wrong.

(and no I'm not in the mod business, just like to tinker and understand how this all works)
