    Introducing the Pinside Q&A’s

For some time now we’ve been thinking that it would be interesting for our community (that’s you!) to be able to learn a little more about the people in pinball that matter the most: the people that are best at creating, playing, modding and telling us great stories about the past of our favorite toys. And for these persons to reach out to our community by taking the time to tell you about all the things you ever wanted to know about and maybe even some of the things you never knew you wanted to know about. To share the passion and devotion needed to work on pinball machines on a daily basis and, ultimately, to try and create a better understanding between the pinball ‘community’ and the ‘industry’.

And what better way to get there than to give the community the opportunity to come up with some interesting questions? Questions that will be selected and forwarded by Pinside moderators to the invited guest, hopefully giving our community the answers to questions long overdue or insights that can only be shared by those that are situated in the midst of the industry.

Well, ideas themselves are not worth a thing, so it's time to set things in motion. Allow us to introduce you to the Pinside Q&A's, a new initiative in which we'll reach out to interesting people related to pinball and ask them the questions for you that you have been wanting them to answer for a long time.

    So how does this work?

As this is an unique opportunity to ask questions to someone we don’t get to ask questions very often, everyone who wants to participate is given the opportunity to ask a single question in a topic especially opened for this purpose. To get an insight in which questions interest the community most, all Pinsiders also have the opportunity to up or down vote the questions being posted. We will use these votes to make a selection of questions that will be forwarded to the invited party. Note that this selection will be made by the moderation team as a whole and that while the votes will be an important deciding factor in the selection procedure, a high vote count won’t guarantee an automatic selection. The moderation team will have the final say in this. Also note that to begin with we strive to do one Q&A a month. However, this timespan may be subject to change based on interest from our community and the industry.

What kind of questions are we aiming for?

We’re aiming for an experience that is pleasant and informative for both the community as well as the invited party, so we’re looking for questions that invite our guests to share some interesting stories with us. It’s ok if your questions are critical, but please keep them decent and try to give them a positive vibe. We consider the invited party ‘our guests’, so we hope that as a community we can make them feel welcome and at ease. We're convinced that ultimately this will lead to better answers.

We are looking for questions that spark answers with some longevity, that’s to say questions that will be interesting to know the answers for in some time to come as well. It would be great if our guests could share some of the creativity, inspiration and passion they feel for pinball with us. We hope you get the drift.

    The rules

Please consider the following guide lines before posting your question:

    • One post and one question per Pinsider. This is not a discussion topic.
    • Up- and downvotes will help us select the questions that the community likes best. Pinsiders can up or down vote as many questions as they like to indicate they find a question interesting or not.
    • Please only post questions related to the topic subject. Q&A topics will be strictly moderated to remove any disrespectful or negative questions to our quest(s).
    • The Q&A will be open for questions for exactly a week after which a selection will be made and forwarded to our guest(s). This selection will be made public.
    • The guest(s) will be free to choose which questions they wish to answer. When we receive answers back from our guest(s) they will be posted in the relevant topic. The guest(s) can choose to answer all questions in one session or to use several sessions to answer the selected questions.
    • The Pinsider devising the question that our guest(s) find the best / most interesting will receive a free Pinside.com t-shirt of his choice!

We hope you will all enjoy this new section to the site! Now go visit the first Q&A session featuring the developer team of the 2013 Star Trek and start making up questions!

Oh wow, this is excellent. I almost pitched this very idea recently, but didn't get around to it. Obviously we were both inspired by reddit's AMA, because you're dead on with what I was hoping to see.

    Very well done.

Can I make a suggestion? This is a super cool feature, for special threads, that people probably don't want to miss.

Maybe give them a blue background on the thread listing page, similar to how promoted for sale posts get a red one? Make them stand out?

Would be annoying if a ton of threads had that, but for something infrequent like this it would be perfect.

Great idea. Thank you sooooooooo much

    Fantastic innovation, thank you!

Good suggestion. A featured topic, something in between a sticky and a normal topic. We will think about it! Thanks!

Can i suggest adding a date when question submission will close?

I agree this makes things more clear, so I added the following rule to the first Q&A session: The closing time for submissions for this Q&A will be the 28th of March at 11:00 AM CET (= 05:00 AM CDT).

Topic had to be drained because it was made sticky.

I'm not sure what you mean by that.

Any movement on this? Any progress with Stern's Star Trek responses? Any other Q&As incoming?

Is there any chance that a friending feature or instant messaging will be added in the future?

Please place feature requests as new topics in the feature requests forum. One feature per topic thread please.
