This is my new homebrew pinball i'm working on right now. I am using an old Williams Smart Set cabinet. The positioning of the playfield in the cabinet is not how i wanted it, but one of the main goals of this build for me is to use everything i have without spending lots of money on new parts. So in addition i won't build a traddional backglas, and maybe something else to make it a little bit more "different" than usual.
I am also using the coils of the old pinball, i hope these will all work. i plan on making a boss, much like Medieval Madness or Attack from Mars. As Background music there will be classic rock/metal.

Thank you very much, videos are coming, i haven't powered in on yet. i just received my P3Roc boards, and meanwhile i worked on the code, so my plan is to solder and connect everything and hope for the best, when i power it up for the first time

The boss head will wobble after being hit

#10 3 years ago

Thank you,

the diver at the bottom is actually from the game Bioshock

#13 3 years ago

thanks

right now i'm trying to get the cables on the playfield finished. still need to solder the 72 leds..

#15 3 years ago

Thank you,
in the helmet there is a led too, and on the corals there is a little bit glow in the dark paint on it.

1 week later
#16 3 years ago

finally started on the LEDs, but ran out of cable. Also this time i am documenting much more than on my first homebrew.

#18 3 years ago

thank you @nokoro
yes for the prototyping i printed some sticks and ring, melted everthing together with a soldering iron and heated it up for bending. That helped me a lot when bending the wire.

the 3d print looks quite stable and it would work too, but i quess if a ball hits it from the side it will shatter.

#19 3 years ago

so i have soldered and connected all the LEDs that are under the playfield... but ran out of cable again

#21 3 years ago

Thank you @alexanr1
First i tried to get the playfield with the glued in inserts as smooth as possible, then i orderd a self adhesive decal with my design online, put it on the playfield and cut out the inserts.
then transparent decals cut to shape for the text of the inserts. then separate decals cut to shape that fit over the inserts to hide the corner of the inserts (black line around the inserts). i just did that in a separate step because on my previous homebrew, the scaling of the big playfield print was a little bit of, and some inserts where not perfectly covered.

and then self adhesive clear pvc decal over the whole playfield. the same as you would use for schoolbooks to protect them. that also holdes everything together und decreases the bulge of the layers.

you have a great gameroom! looks awesome

I used inkscape and krita. Both are free and available for windows and linux. Inkscape is vector based, i started with that to make all the clear shapes. Krita is similar to photoshop, i quess it has less features but it was enough for me to put detail in

I used myposter.at. It is settled in Austria

#24 3 years ago

Inkscape is really cool, you can use layers. I just hide a few layers and have ma print for cutting the playfield, and hide some other layers and have my playfield graphic

#25 3 years ago

so my wiring is complete. Today i hooked it up with the p3roc. The switches work, but no coil and no led is working.
Does anybody have an idea where i should look for the error?
the boards do have power, the power entry board has it's 48Volt as well.
here is a diagram how i connected the boards, am i missing something?! maybe something with the dip-switches...

if anybody has an idea please let me know.

Ok already found one error and a bad connection on my serial in to the pd16. The coils still dont work, but 2 of my 3 pd led now work . And of course i seem to have swapped some color channels...

Quoted from Cmartin1235:

How the wire forms integrate with the tentacles.Do you use on the wire forms?

what do you mean?

#29 3 years ago

well this is frustrating right now. after 3 hours of trying out, testing connections and making new cables, i came to the conclusion i have a faulty power entry board.
i borrowed the power entry board from my Yucatan Homebrew and got flipping .
after 3 games one bank on my PD-16 doesn't work anymore. The LED indicates that there is no 48V power on this bank. haven't checked the fuse yet..but boy that is frustrating... i quess i'll check all of those coils for wrong wiring now and hopefully find something.
also one PD-Led isn't working and i don't know why yet. The watchdog timeout led is on, but the serial cable is fine.

Could it be, when i wired a LED wrong and there is a short, that all of the LEDs on this PD-LED won't work? Does anybody know that?
or will de Watchdog timeout LED then be on too?!

#30 3 years ago

good. it's the fuse.
again i don't see any obvious error yet. maybe it's because i have a right flipper and the right upper flipper on the same bank?!

Oh yes, the day ends well. Gerry helped me with my wrong dipswitch settings on the not working PD Led. And for the power entry board he als had advice, since it is an old revision there is an additional cable neccessary, havw to try that out soon. But for now every light is working

thank you, i quite don't know exactly what i'll make next to the diver on top. I thought of something like a big "Deep Blue Rage" Sign and some corals.
On the playfield i also have some empty spaces where i didn't decide yet what will go over the flashers.

Nokoro

Quoted from Nokoro:

Amazing! I’ve played around with several projects using RGB LEDs and always struggle getting the timing and colors just right. I’m not very good at it. Yours looks great. Very polished and professional.

i used the light show creator for mpf. That makes it really easy to create lighshows.
Are you using mpf?

#47 3 years ago
Quoted from miracleman:

I like the raw/weathered look, you've incorporated that well.
Your 'boss' octopus on the playfield is to small for the big red tentacles on the pf.
He should be on the top of the backbox with a head as big as a soccer ball, and big tentacles wrapping around your diver and going down to line up with the ones on the pf.
When someone asked about the wireform ramp earlier they were asking if you were going to make it a tentacle too.

Yes you are absolutely right. I didn't think ahead when i made the playfield graphics, i wanted to make the bosshead way bigger, but didn't think the bossshaker coil mechanism would take that much space.
Your idea to put the real Head on the backbox is great, that could fix the proportions.

I' don't really want the wireforms to be tentacles. i think for that they would have to be red, and i really like the brass look. and it goes really good with brown.

#48 3 years ago
Quoted from Stebel:

Attract mode is really nice.
Isn’t Squishy just a minion of the big red Octopus? Or is he suppose to be the head of the tentacles?

well originally i wanted the head to be bigger.
i like the idea, that the actual head is just a minion, and i think i'll try to make a bigger head on the backbox. that would be cool.
and for the minion on the playfield a couple of small tentacles on top.

Thank you all, those are great ideas

#49 3 years ago
Quoted from wisefwumyogwave:

Looks like a fun shooter!

i hope so haven't had much time to play before a fuse burnt through. right now i'm waiting for new coils, then i'll hook it up again.

1 week later
#51 3 years ago

so i put in new coils for the flippers and slingshots. and added a PD-16. Everything seems stable now . It developed a couple of mechanical problems, but for the first "real" game it was fun.
the left ramp need a bit of tweaking and of course there are still a couple of things missing.

Thank you, i do like the angler fisch idea. i have thought about it before but couldn't find a place on the playfield.
so this will the plan then: the octopus on the playfield is the minion of lord rage, who is a big red octopus on the backbox. and i'll try to put an anglerfish there as well.

Have been coding the last couple of days. the first 4 Bosses will appear now in random order, and all of my multiball modes work like the should now .
I have a 4 Ball Multiball integrated and i have to say i really love it. On my first homebrew machine i had issues with physical locks. so i ended up having a 2 ball Multiball. Gonna revisit that sometime in the future.

on the top left there is still a ramp missing. gonna try out with cardboard soon, to get an idea of what works and what not. i want some kind of looping or whirlpool like in whitewater. The ball should drop out into the kickouthole.

#60 3 years ago

The screws on the flipperlink of my upper flipper keep getting loose... i wanted to save money with using old parts, but i end up buying all new ones..
But here i hit the skillshot. After plunging when the ball comes around there is a red standuptarget below the octopus lit.

and i also need to find some spring steel for my ramp entry on the left to prevent jumps

#61 3 years ago

The 2 wire ramps need tweaking there are not that easy to hit, but in this video it just worked ,.. so satisfiying.

#62 3 years ago

and the 4Ball Multiball with 30s ball saves

#65 3 years ago

Thank you ,
my girlfriend actually never liked upper flippers. so i tried to design it, that it isn't mandatory. For me i really love it, it is a lot of fun, when the ball comes around the curves of the plunge.

oh i haven't even thought about the spinner decal yet .

#67 3 years ago

Thank you, at the end of the spinner orbit, there is still a small wireramp missing, i want it to feed the upper flipper, unless that takes the fun out of it

2 weeks later
#69 2 years ago

today i hopefully fixed my "upper flipper getting loose" problem.

a "new" link doesn't fit, unless you screw it together the wrong way
that flipper is going nowhere now.

IMG_20210402_153446 (resized).jpgIMG_20210402_153446 (resized).jpgIMG_20210402_153456 (resized).jpgIMG_20210402_153456 (resized).jpgIMG_20210402_154217 (resized).jpgIMG_20210402_154217 (resized).jpgIMG_20210402_154954 (resized).jpgIMG_20210402_154954 (resized).jpg
#70 2 years ago

i also fixed a broken wireramp and changed the design under the octopus head slightly. The ball runs now very smooth into that curve into the scoop.
and i shortened the guide on the right of the drop target. so hopefully hitting the drop target gets more easy
IMG_20210401_151655 (resized).jpgIMG_20210401_151655 (resized).jpg

#71 2 years ago

i also fixed my center scoop ramp, that feeds to the left inlane.
in there is now a piece of foam, when the ball hits it, it won't bounce out again. i don't even need a one-way gate anymore.

and on my "lock ramp", i cut the entry off and glued on a new piece that eliminates the bump. no jumping anymore.

and furthermore on the left is now the new "whirlramp". i might reprint the top peace in clear, so that the light can shine through. it is pretty steep, but does work okay so far.

and i'll upload a new gameplay video.
funny thing happened, the ball got stuck on the drop target. so the code counted a lot of boss hits. Starting at the second boss, you need to hit a specific ramp before you can attack the boss. if you just hit the boss anyway it will give you a 2-Ball Multiball at the 5th hit. (and there is a cow sound and the 4th hit).
For players who just try to hit the boss and don't see what the need to do to advance, they will still have a cool Multiball.

Glad you like the fish .
i have thought about a Treasure chest. maybe on the backbox. i might also get rid of the jellyfish on the left. Maybe swap it out for a better one, not sure yet.

#83 2 years ago

in the meanwhile we played it a lot. some difficult things emerged, that i have to solve. but all in all it is so much fun. the final boss hit, is a very hard shot, that bounces out a lot.
i also am buying now complete new flipper assemblies. the old used parts keep breaking.. the shaft of my left flipper broke.

Quoted from Stebel:

The black one that has the wood background looks really good.
Maybe make the Octopus hold a pinball or a flipper, just so others know it’s a pinball T shirt.
Or make the Octopus over your pinball machine.
The shirt looks great as is as well!

i tried to include a Ball, but that just didn't look right. but i might make another shirt when everything is finished, with the diver and hopefully a good looking big Lord Rage Octopus on the backbox. then i'll try to make a good foto and go from there.
Making the graphics is not really my thing, i find it very hard and it takes me such a long time until i get something thats acceptable.

Hahaha oh people will know that it is a pinball shirt, because i won't stop talking about it )

#88 2 years ago

added a piece of metal for protection to my "whirlramp". the 3d printed wall was not strong enough.

and another piece for the scoop entry. i feel like it improved a bit.

swapped out the right and left flipper assembly for some new ones yesterday. The upperflipper will get one of those as well if it fits.
It's incredible what problems appear when working on a pinball machine. I've screwd the left flipper as tight as possible, but the flippershaft still manages to turn with all the forces... i think i will roughen the shaft up a little, hopefully that works. I already broke a screw from tightening.
IMG_20210429_142915 (resized).jpgIMG_20210429_142915 (resized).jpgIMG_20210429_183754 (resized).jpgIMG_20210429_183754 (resized).jpgIMG_20210429_195200 (resized).jpgIMG_20210429_195200 (resized).jpg

hm interesting, that is really weird that that problem really exists. i have sanded in a few lines, we will see how that goes.

#93 2 years ago
Quoted from DOOOMTRAIN:

I don’t know if this helps, but your problem reminded me of this Jersey Jack video on flippers I watched a while back (go to 11:41 in the video). He says that the shaft should never be tightened all the way.
Love the project, man!

Thank you for the video, love that!

ah really cool, that was totally what i had in mind.

#101 2 years ago

I have been playing a lot, i am really happy with all the mechanics now. Have to do some minor things, and of course Lord Rage on the Backbox is still to do. I am also very satisfied with my code. It is a pretty hard pinball, so i put in a couple of possibilities to get an extra ball. today i finally beat Lord Rage Boss 5, and even a Bonus Boss after him. Took me a while to learn how to play my machine ..

Hm. Turns out my temporary installment of a piece of metal clamped down with a post was only temporary. It came loose and blocked my droptarget from coming up. So i said to myself screw this. So i screwed it.

And rhe screws are behind the post now so not even visible

I havent had a good idea for Lord Rage on the backbox yet. I made this mockup, i like how it looks, but it is much to small.
So i think i will take some cardboard and draw up a bigger head and go from there. I already have a functioning motor on the backbox. I want a little bit of movement, but i guess that will be the next problem, when everything is bigger, that it might be to heavy.

Quoted from Nokoro:

Nice prototype. Are you going to add tentacles that droop down over the back box?

Yes i want to make one tentacle that goes behind the diver. the rest i don't know. gonna try it out with some bendy things .
and i still want to put a Deep Blue Rage Sign in front of Lord Rage, so maybe he can hold it somehow.

#107 2 years ago
Quoted from Stebel:

Nice prototype. Are you going to add tentacles that droop down over the back box?

I think so too. i made a 3d printed base already, printing it right now. i trying it with to hard springs. hope that will hold the weight. a tiny, but strong motor will push a little piece to wobble it. it will be very slow, but a coil is just too loud outside the cabinet.

on top goes a cardboard construction. and then i will model details on top with epoxy sculpt. let's see how that goes.
but right now i'm pretty confident that this will all work

It feels a weird when you use white glue and paper towels for your pinball project, but it is my cheap solution of making a giant octopus.

Could you do a color changing LED under the jelly? Could be a nice effect.

oh yes there is a rgb led and a rgb flasher. i could definitly put in a lightshow for the jellyfish to make it look more alive

No beak, that is just an inprint from the bottom part. I fixed it, and there will be the DBR Sign in front. I just plan to put 2 leds in the eyes, the cables for that are already finished. And i have a flasher there already, so i guess i'll put that behind both eyes. And flash it when he speaks. So that is next, and then i'll put the motor in it's place. It should slowly push the head forward, and a spring will bring it back again

#130 2 years ago

My idea with a motor shaking the big head doesn't work. Head is too heavy, or motor too weak. Anyway it still wobbles when i nudge the table, so thats cool.

Glued on the tentacles today. Have to do some touch ups but i really like the look. I will make some glasses for the goggles, with transparent filament.
Then i have to code the lights in the goggles, a lightshow for the jellyfish. And hopefully find a solution for the few bugs left in my code.

And fix some broken stuff, but the finishline is in sight

Quoted from Cmartin1235:

I need to up my game on my 3D modeling. What software are you using for non-prismatic objects like the angler fish, diver, octopus etc? Thanks.

i didn't make the angler fish myself, modeling such complex figures is not something i can do. i searched for a fish on thingiverse and then imported it into the webbased tinkercad. in there i made adjustments to the fish model for the cutout for the flasher.
The line from the fish to the bulb is just 2 strings of 3d filament heated up and twisted.

for the diver: the diving helmet is also from thingiverse, and the gloves and shoes are cut from an astronauts model from thingiverse. then i made the divers body with cardboard, wire and for the details i used epoxy sculpt "milliput". and also some 3d pen for the corals.

Quoted from MeesterPieter:

nice work stefan, any problems yet with 3d printed parts breaking? what type of filament are you using?

Thank you, just one real problem so far. The left wall of the left ramp entry was to weak, it kept breaking at the corner from wall to floor. Thats the exact point the ball would hit shooting from far right. Solved the problem with putting some brassmetal over the edge. I think i used PETG there. Thats usually quite strong. Should have rounded the sharp corner i guess so that it doesn't break that easy.
everything else is anyway thicker, so im not aware of any other weak spots.

#160 2 years ago

Also i tried to protect every edge with a post when possible, so that nothing can be hit straight on and break off.

Code update for Deep Blue Rage.
Made some things to make it easier. More and longer Ballsaves, and created a Mystery wheel, that will jump to the last phase of the current boss on certain things.
For me it is now much easier to get to the last boss Lord Rage.
so the final boss fight is now harder.
when you get to the attack phase, the flippers will be reversed. Also when you hit the blue targets on the left, it will reverse the flippers. It will however start a ballsave, that it isn't unfair.
the reversed flippers are crazy

#172 1 year ago
Quoted from Cmartin1235:

Great light shows. What play events activate the ball saves?

i enable a ball save when the flippers are reversed. You definitly need a second to get it in your head that the flippers don't work normal anymore )
so technically, if you are very good at this, you could go for a target on the left (when you are at the final boss) to start the ball save and shoot for the boss.

when in Multiball it is just mayham, when a ball hits the left targets. but you will be fine because of the ball save. that is really good fun.

Reading the topic from the beginning, it's crazy how fast you worked on it !
I did not understand how did you do for the figurines (the fish or the octopus).
Is it some 3D print at the beginning, with paint ?
Is it sculpture ?

thank you, yes the octopus and the fish are 3d models from thingiverse. I imported them into tinkercad to cut holes for the leds etc. The tentacles are from a different model, i heated and bent them to fit around the spinner. Then painted it with acrylic paint. The fish also has some glow in the dark paint on it.

Deep Blue Rage flips again!
Had a bunch of fantastic problems when i put the playfield in the cabinet:
What i expected was that i had to cut into the backbox for the ramp, since i made all guides higher and the lock ramp sits on top of the guides. So the hole into the backbox was to small.
what i didn't expect was that the new position of the scoop now was in the way of the subwoofer box. The playfieldbwas 1cm short of sliding in place....
So i cut the housing of the woofer up.

2 super problems remain. I cant put the glass on yet, because one tentacle and the corals behind are to high up.
and i put in new flippers. You guessed it, my hated problem nr. 1 is back. When flipping the flipper changes its rotation like it is not screwed tight. But i left myself a bit of room there, to make it tighter. So i will go cry a little and the try that.

Other then that, the playfield swap went very well. I am very happy with it. Love how everything just looks a tiny bit better.

Quoted from leeoneil:

Man thats awesome to see it in a cabinet !
I don't understand your flipper problem. It's not "squeezed" enough ? So i'ts moving after a few plays ?
And the tiny version is so cute ! What do you want to do with it ?

Yes the flipper is tiltet up after a few flips. With the right flipper it worked now, it stays now in the correct position. I made the screw a little tighter. The left flipper sucks... The problem is, you should tighten the screw and the metal piece that clamps around the flipper should leave a small gap. Because whe the gap closes it cannot get any tighter. On the left flipper it is closed now but stills moves... . So i will have to try just tighten it further... So next time i will have to take the whole flipper out, i will not be able to get it out i think...

Well. I even sanded grooves in the flippershaft that helped before. Will see.

The small pinball model will go on my work desk , i can even take the playfield out and tilt the backbox forward. I will put some leds under the playfield. I origally made it to have a reference right at the desk. I took every measurement from my bride of pinbot.

#192 1 year ago

ok the flipper seem to be fixed now....
sanded the flippershaft again and the insides of the flipperlink, than i still had to tighten it until it wouldn't go any further.
anyway seems to work now. had quite a bit of deep blue rage with that problem..

but hey the glass goes on as well.

this is my problem/toDo list for now:

- The powerswitch is too weak. it seems that when i turn it on, there is a spark and welds the switch to closed.
- on the whirlramp entry, sometimes the ball jumps (doesn't seem like a major problem, maybe i can leave it as it is)
- fix the legs with new style brackets
- fine tune Slingshot switches
- swap out some single star posts with double star posts. on the left and right it is cooler when there are double star posts
- big problem: right ramp doesn't work at all
- mpf: new attract mode and fix some bugs

And apparently this is not enough to hold a deep blue rage flipper.
Deep Blue Rage has eaten quite a few flipper links...

#198 1 year ago

So the flipperproblem for the left flipper kills me. Screwed it tight until it wouldn't go no more, ruined the screws, so no chance to tighten it further anyway. So took it out put on a new flipper link. And now the plan is to change the coils. I have now put in some old 11630 coils (need to buy new ones) instead of the 11629 ones. So far it is working, but need to replace it because it seems weaker than the other. Let's hope for the best

Thank you very much, i am almost finished with the visual appearence now. On the back of the right ramp, there is room, maybe i will put a small squid there

#199 1 year ago

Had an awesome game, beat all the Minions and Lord Rage and even 4 generic Bosses after Lord Rage, crushed the previous highscore.
So i would say it got a bit easier, but because the shots are a lot better now. Some ramps are a bit tighter and therefore more difficult. The boss area is so much fun now. The shots in there just work soo nice now.
The upper flipper is more fun now.

That is so satisfying right now, all the changes really paid of. Deep Blue Rage is more fun now than before.
