I'm assuming a colour filter over a masking/tinting filter would work too?

Yeah I'd think regardless of what order they were laying on each other, what'd matter is it's dark enough to hide the white on the segments. So a lighter color filter by itself would still cause the segments to stand out, but doubled up with the smoke/neutral filter (either below or on top) it'd be tinted enough. A dark color filter by itself would be fine (ie. dark blue or a dark green).

Get ready for a December Sale on the already low low prices of these budget DIY/assembled sets!
Too busy this year for a Thanksgiving Sale, but starting in early-December I'll be doing a multi-set discount on the displays as well as some FREE SHIPPING on US orders over $150 on the website. Canada/Australia customers will not be left out either and get some reduced shipping rates. I usually get a bit festive in December, so there's a chance for some other Holiday shenanigans to happen as well!

And how about a chance to win a free 6-digit or 7-digit display set?
If you purchase a set of UNO or TRADITIONAL displays from PINITECH, all you need to do is get a picture of the display set installed in your game and post it to this thread! You'll then be entered into 3x drawings for $250 in giveaways per drawing.. including a full set of LED displays or an nvram. So if you buy a set, you might win a set! Not bad, eh?

I'm going to set a hard-deadline of January 14th 11:59 EST to get entries in for the 1st drawing. That should give people that order in December time to get their displays built out and installed... or plenty of motivation for anyone that's had a DIY Kit sitting around since July to get 'er done! More info on the giveaway and prizes.

Facebook? Social Media? What's that?
Finally joining the party after years of avoiding a FB business page. Hey better late than never!
LIKE the page and be on the look-out for some FB-only contests!

Hi, I figured out a good size of foam tape to use with these UNO displays. The size is 1/4" x 3/8"

It's just the right amount of foam to hide the white edges around the digits and hides those shiny 0.156 header pins. It just about fills the entire window on the backglasses too.
Just wrap around the outside of the digits, mounted flush to the fronts of the digits.

Added Bonus:
If mounted flush to the front of the digits, there is just enough adhesive around the edges of the tape to grip the color filters! I didn't even need tape!

That's a nice tip there! Seems the narrower width wraps much nicer around the perimeter of the digits than the thicker/wider foam tape I have. I wanted to wrap around the sides of the led digits like that rather than cut individual strips, but with the wider tape it would have left too much adhesive exposed if you weren't careful (and thoughts of people having foam tape stick to their backglasses wasn't sitting well). Also wasn't sure if narrower tape flush with the top of the led digits might still allow light to bleed-in from in-between the backglass and foam tape. Looks like that's not a concern really, cause I sure don't see any light bleeding issues in your pictures!

It's great to have people experimenting and coming up with some better ideas! Beautiful machine and super job with the restoration! Glad these displays could be part of it!

Looks very nice.
Searched and searched no tape 1/4" x 3/8" or 6mm x 9mm size I can find in US.

I know Wayne has been looking into getting foam die-cut to size for his displays but all places he has checked have come back fairly expensive (something over a dollar a display). So he has been trying to find a better solution then several pieces of foam tape but has had no luck so far. He is trying to keep displays as cheap as possible for his customers so adding over $5 to the cost isn't something he wants to do just to have die-cut foam. What do you guys think - is it worth extra money to go that route?

Needs to be a solution to attach colored filters and black out edges. Taping them with scotch tape does not work. Tape comes loose. Minor thing but needed for complete solution. Have started several times to try to use piece of 99 cent black poster board. It is large enough to do Allot of these. Am not good at crafts and always at the bottom of the pinball maintenance list. Idea is to cut rectangle same size as black plastic mask pieces that covered the original tube display edges. Then cut the center and fold it out so it holds against the white edges of the displays. Then cut a slot in each end so filters can slide in. Have no idea what cost would be for something like that cut and punched, mailed flat. Idea comes from flat cardboard model of lunar lander I remember getting at school library for free back when.

Got my set of UNO installed in Big Game. Went with Straw Yellow filters...again going "off the beaten path" with colour choices. Green was the obvious choice. The yellow looks great...but it's damn hard to photograph. The closeup is done with the flash on, and more accurately represents the colour than the lights off pictures.

Awesome, glad to hear it! It's very difficult showing any of the color filters off accurately. The "straw yellow" really is a really slick looking yellow I think.

I'm pretty much decided that as soon as possible I'm going to work on getting some closer "color-accurate" pictures of the filters installed on a single white display. Pictures just aren't doing them justice and I'm at fault for not getting better pictures posted sooner. If it takes a tripod and hours of fooling with shutter/aperture settings, I'll find some setup to get more consistent results and then swap all the filters I have onto the display to get consistent pictures for each color. Stay tuned

On this Medusa I went with the traditional type displays using medium purple and magenta. For the playfield display, I used red and doubled up straw yellow filters. It looks great with the surrounding colors.

I don't know how I missed this thread but need some displays for a custom pin and the uno's look perfect...

what is the discounted postage rate to Aus for 5 displays?

can you post a pic of what the UNO board looks like for the DIY option next to a fitted up UNO to gauge the soldering parts need to be installed?

is their a warranty period on the assembled displays?

Assembled UNO Display:
ballystern_led_display_single (resized).jpgballystern_led_display_single (resized).jpg

There's also an in-depth review for these displays that Rob @ Credit Dot Pinball did here:
https://creditdotpinball.com/2017/08/21/review-pinitechs-uno-and-traditional-led-display-kits/

Assembled displays carry 180 day warranty against defects, but I won't leave anyone hanging if there's a question or issue with the displays after that period. All assembled displays that ship out have nicely soldered joints, components lined up, flux cleaned up & look every bit professional. The products I ship are assembled as if I was building them for myself & look as-good if not better than product pictures. I've never been fan of "glamour shots" where you then receive an item that looks nothing like the picture.

Displays are a verified low-current design & will last a long time. At full brightness (dimmer turned all the way up) an individual AMBER digit display comes in around 100mA current usage. With WHITE or BLUE it's about 65mA. Dial them down a bit & the numbers get even better. This is a huge advantage over a lot of other displays on the market that are 130-160mA (or more) at full brightness. Lower current = longer lasting displays & less load on the 5v regulators in these machines that are already pushing 1.6-1.8A without the additional load of displays. I'd love to reveal further comparisons to what else is on the market because there's some not-so-great designs out there shorting or stressing components (including the LEDs themselves) that could limit the lifespan of those displays, but it's a bit unfair of me to do that, it'd help the competition figure out design problems & would also lead to unnecessary drama. So I'll just say that if anyone cares to setup some benchmarks, they'll find the Pinitech UNO and Pinitech TRADITIONAL perform pretty solidly

I'll send you a PM on the shipping. I can offer some discounts for Australia/Canada customers putting in $150+ orders or that want multiple display sets, but we'd have to set it up via PM. Unfortunately the Paypal shopping cart is pretty limited and with high international rates it's not something I can make automatic on the website.

I picked a set of these to try them out. I went with the traditionals. Everything came packed nicely. The components are all labeled on the board so it was just a matter of putting the pieces together.

Old 4 Player Display and new Pinitech LED Display installed. I had not yet enabled the commas but will. I think this product is fantastic and very reasonably priced. Acebathound also contacted me and responded quickly to question I had. If you are comfortable soldering components I would highly recommend getting the DIY kit. Thanks.

Cool! That's actually a good comparison shot of an LED display mixed in with plasma displays.. due to how close the displays are to each other in that style Bally cabinet. I also hadn't realized that game used a red lens to turn amber displays red.

Looking forward to seeing the whole set in there!

Good news came back from my LED digit supplier on a few items It looks like I'll be ordering in some more LED digits in January! So, get ready to see a handful of additional colors! What other color options would you love to see? RED is definite. GREEN is a strong possibility. YELLOW I'm not entirely sure on? I still think some people will prefer the WHITE with color filters, but variety for people that want native color digits is always nice.

For the entire month of January, I'll be offering a discount on BLUE led displays (as DIY Kits or assembled).
This sale is not active yet, but I'll make it happen by January 2nd and it'll be good for the whole month! The BLUE sets will be offered at the same price as AMBER sets if not slightly cheaper. This is due to having a lot more BLUE digits than the other colors right now. So if you've got a XENON, EMBRYON or any other machine that looks sweet with BLUE led digits -- January will be a perfect time to pull the trigger!

I truly want these to be one of the best display options available for Bally/Stern machines , so I'll be taking care of a few other items that have been on my to-do list to refine these displays a bit more. Always happy to hear suggestions/feedback too! If you've got any ideas, critiques, nice-to-have's on these displays that would make them even better, please send me a PM!

On that note, I'd like to know what people think of the current font & segment thickness. Years back I was looking at all the plasma glass fonts and was going to do something custom that matched my own preference in what an original display glass would look like. But after doing these displays & seeing how nice the thicker segments look myself -- and hearing other people's feedback, it's kind of changed my mind. Still, I'd like to know if there's any issues with the current look of the digits that are holding people back. The comma is a given.. not a deal killer for some people, but enough of a deal killer for others. I'll likely be addressing that going forward at some point. But aside from that, any gripes about the current style of the font? Are displays with thinner segments more of your thing? Let me know!

EBDLE has red filters right? Did the orange overpower the red filter or was it bleeding around the edges of it? I'd like to know if I can do anything there that might help with that.

The orange led power powered it and looked orange. I guess a red filter would fix the problem

I can't really tell from IPDB pictures, but I'm wondering how that bottom "backglass" (ie. red lens and masked area) works. Is it a choice at all to remove the red lens or is the black masked area around the digits part of that?

You won't get a true RED out of a plasma display or amber led digits since the color wavelength is already decided and you can only vary that so much. So it'll be a more red-looking orange color. That said, adding an additional red filter should help at least make it look similar to when plasma displays are used in there. The downside would be as you stack filters it'll reduce brightness/intensity. If you'd like to try anything there, let me know & I can send some red filters your way. May not be able to send anything out until 1st week in January but I don't mind helping you to experiment to see if you can get a nicer red out of AMBER digits. The other option would be WHITE displays in the game.

Assembled my Christmas present Uno6 set today. Very nice instructions. It was easy enough for even a noob like me. I found the foam light block included greatly improved the look. I need to fine tune placement because my lift bar for my backglass sits a bit high, so the displays are a bit low. It was fun to put together and looks great.

Over time the bottom board on the head on some of this machines tends to warp a little keeping backglass from dropping down into the channel as far as it should. I can see the "bow" in that board on your machine. If you have any woodworking skills (or tools) you could dig that channel backglass rest in out a little deeper in the center so backglass would drop down further.

I have also "propped up" both corners of heads on machines in the past trying to get that board to "warp" the other direction and straighten it out some. The issue with doing that is it can take months (or longer) and you can't play the machine correctly with two wooden post under the head. However if you don't play your machine on a regular bases putting a 2x4 post under the front corners of the head holding back legs about a 1/2" off the ground sometimes helps over time.

Just 10 entries so far! Looks like good odds to me!

Another reminder bump for the January 15th contest!

Figure a pre-weekend bump might give one or two more people the motivation to get their displays assembled over this weekend and/or pictures posted!

Here's another one for the gallery! My restored KISS with white Pinitech UNOs, with neutral filters lit at about 75%. The neutral filter offered by Pinitech is just a smoky filter that takes some of the edge off of the nude digits and hides the "white-ness" of the unlit digit segments.

I have red filters too, but I'm really digging the look of these white digits with respect to the theme. It's almost a blue steel look (insert Zoolander joke here).

Do any of these work for the Taxi jackpot meter (p/n C-8364-1)? The website specifies Bally AS-2518-15, Bally AS-2518-21, Bally AS-2518-58, Stern DA-100, Stern DA-300, but I was wondering if 7 digits is 7 digits, and these will work?

Thanks!

No. Will not work. You need a Williams numeric display. Completely different animals.

I have basic soldering skills, not too much board experience but I think enough to make things scary. It seems like everything is labeled and easy enough to install? Looking to get a set for UNO for Paragon in Amber. Again, real dummy here

If you haven't soldered much or otherwise consider yourself a beginner, check out Adafruit's video and guide on "Excellent Soldering"..
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-guide-excellent-soldering/tools

I link the PDF for that in the instructions because I know that some people may not have a lot of soldering experience under their belt. As long as you read that guide and have the desire to get better at soldering, you shouldn't have any problems. That's what the DIY Kits are great for, so many people have purchased kits and mentioned how much it helped them with being more comfortable soldering and how it improved their skills and speed.

You'll likely find the first display or two take a bit of time.. maybe 45-60min (or possibly longer) per display if you're a beginner, whereas someone with more soldering experience might find it takes about 20-25min per display. That said, after you build the first couple of displays out, you should find you're making a lot better time on the rest of the displays for the set. Instructions are included and step you through the assembly. I cater instructions so that experience isn't assumed and try to make it as easy as possible for people to get the kits built correctly the first time That said, if there's ever anything unclear let me know and I'll make a note to get the instructions updated.

Hope that helps you decide which direction you'd like to go! Happy to answer any other questions for you here or via PM!

Dig out that old Betamax, take it apart and practice your de-solder / solder skills on it, as the saying goes, practice makes perfect.
Don't perfect your skills on a new pcb!
These aren't so tough once you get going.

I installed a rectifier board on Paragon. With that, I also installed SCRs on the lamp board and reflowed some header pins. I guess the list of parts, and making sure the right part goes into the right place was the only real concern for me. I do like that everything is labeled. There isn't a way to royally screw up is there? As in the incorrect component in the incorrect position?

Well, with most kits there usually are things that if installed backwards could damage the components. ICs could be oriented wrong. Polarity-sensitive capacitors could be installed wrong (definitely don't want to do this). The only way for that not to have any chance of happening is if the components only fit into the board one way. Sadly, most components don't fit in that category. So with that said, it's key to follow the steps in the instructions.

Tell you what, I'll PM you with the link for the instructions and you can look them over and let me know if anything looks unclear or if you have questions. At this point with a fresh set of eyes on it, I'm thinking it'd be good to add an additional link to some more detailed pictures of the front/back of a completed display so people have those to refer to.
