The new ColorDMD X-LED will be previewed at the 2018 Texas Pinball Festival!

ColorDMDX (resized).pngColorDMDX (resized).png

The X-LED is designed to extend full multicolor support to 192x64 DMD games including Baywatch, Frankenstein, Batman Forever, and Maverick. The X-LED utilizes the same ColorDMD Chroma controller board used in current LED products, and leverages ColorDMD's extensive colorization technology for a complete, large-format, full-color experience.

The TPF preview will appear at the ColorDMD booth, and feature Eric Priepke's astounding work on BAYWATCH! Baywatch is an iconic game that includes challenging full-motion video, video modes, and dynamic animation sequences that change based on gameplay. Eric has colored them all, and it's like nothing you've seen! If you're a fan of large format DMD games, this is an exciting preview you won't want to miss.

ColorDMD extends our sincere thanks to Mark Brown for sharing his game at TPF!

A limited pilot run of X-LED displays is in production now, targeting Spring 2018 release. On release, ColorDMD X-LED will support for both the Baywatch and SIGMA (single-color) ROMs. The SIGMA ROM allows custom selection from 97 different static colors, and also supports dynamic color variation using an external RGB controller.

Displays from the pilot run have been priced at $469, and will be available exclusively from ColorDMD. We will provide further updates and product information in the upcoming weeks.

Quoted from robotron911:

Is it an optical illusion or do the LED dots seem more tightly bunched on these than the normal LED display?

You've got a good eye!

The dots on a ColorDMD X-LED are 2mm spacing, and 2.5mm on our standard size (128x32) LED display. These are both very similar to the spacing to the corresponding gas plasma displays.

Another fun fact... the X-LED contains more than 12,000 individual RGB LEDs! 3x a standard size DMD!

Just a reminder to stop by our "Everything's Bigger in Texas" reveal at TPF and have a few games on Baywatch! While you're there, pick up one of these nifty pinball keylights! Perfect for storing coin door keys and finding stuff in the dark, plus it's FREE!

EVERYTHING'S BIGGER IN TEXAS... BAYWATCH MUST SEE PREVIEW AT TPF!

We're just one day away the Texas Pinball Festival and our preview for Baywatch on the new ColorDMD X-LED display! With the higher resolution, large format display there's a lot to see!

Of course, all the things you've come to expect from ColorDMD will be there... full color video modes, full motion capture beauties, and hard-to-color dynamic modes where multiple animation elements change based on gameplay... trapped diver, chopper rescue, shark flip, and more. But Eric Priepke's added one special feature that's never been seen on any ColorDMD before... full color animated scoring!

Watch waves crash and the sun's reflection dynamically ripple on the water, while fully colorized helicopters, boats, sharks, and jetskiers move between and behind embossed score digits that change with each switch hit. It's absolutely stunning!

Baywatch will be set up throughout the weekend in the ColorDMD booth at TPF! Find us along the back wall near the large Marco booth. Don't miss it!

Quoted from rubberducks:

It was reported that you said in a podcast (wasn't linked to) that you intended to discontinue LCDs and go full LED within a couple of years.
I assume the intention is to replicate 'high res' or smoothing with smaller dot pitch LED panels (that should be available and affordable within a couple of years)?

I haven't done any podcasts or interviews in the last couple of years, so not sure what was reported.

Supply for LCD has always been difficult, but we don't have any plans to replace LCD with high-density LED displays. Even if they were available, the cost would be prohibitive. The panels we are using for X-LED currently cost about 3.5x that of our standard LED display.

Parts are ordered. Currently targeting end of April for completion.

However this is a pilot run. We might encounter surprises that result in delays so plan accordingly.
