    Quoted from gaberm1972:

the budget for the basement started getting shoestring thin.

Hope you're prepared for when that shoestring breaks. Always does. And despite what you tell your wife, you figure out a way to keep your shoes tied.

I've broken quite a few shoelaces during my game room build...

Were prepared. Everything has been purchased and paid for. Contractor just left yesterday and collected his final check. Still have cash in the till, so we actually worked it out fairly well.

No, do I use the remaining money to pay off some of the credit cards used for the basement or on toys. Thats the hard part to tell the wife.

    #53 8 years ago

    Pay off the debt

Then use 0% credit cards to pay off part of mortgage & put the rest on a 6 month arm based on 6 mo LIBOR w/2.25 margin & ride it out till fed raises rates above 2 since prime & Libor always follow fed

    You're welcome

I have thought of getting a 0% card to do just that. Need to see how close we are to the magicaly PMI eliminating 80%...

My last refinance I used my Military VA home loan specifically to cancel out our PMI. House appraised high enough to finish the basement and lowered our monthly payment $120 just by getting rid of PMI.

That's smart but what did it do to the length of your house payments?

    #57 8 years ago

I started over again, 30 years. But the monthly payments went down and I had enough to finish the basement, raised the over all value of the house and also paid off other bills that had high interest.

I'd say it was a good trade off then. So you got a better interest rate I take it.

Don't fill all the walls right away, things will always pop up that you just have to have and you'll have no room.

I also bought that first picture. It's really nice and it looks great in our gameroom.

Almost done. Just getting the furnature, pool table and still need to find that elusive pinball machine the whole family wants.

Have you picked out a pool table light yet?

    #68 8 years ago

In ceiling can spots. We had a lighting chart form the pool distributer, Lay it on the floor and set the spots. Can't have a true pool table swag lamp because we want to get the ping pong topper for the table and the swag lights would just get in the way.

    #69 8 years ago

Don't get a pool light - no need if you have enough recessed lights. We're not getting the lamp either. We have so many recessed lights, I was concerned the recessed lights may cast a shadow of a pool lamp light on the table. You should be good!

    #70 8 years ago

Contractor finish and installed 22 can lights. 65 watts, yeah. That was expensive. We spent about 250 on led Lights. Not we have all the lights on at 222 watts.

    OK smart move.

That will save you a heap of money every year.

Slowly switching over myself...damn them puppies are expensive. The only issue is the few types I've bought don't dim all the way....but that's nothing new to us.

    #74 8 years ago

Ours only dim to 35%. Its brighter then I want, but you also don't get the annoying hig pitched hum / whistle of an incandescent when dimmed.

    Yep...always a trade off.

Video entertainment installed. One over the fireplace with 5.1 and one in the pub / arcade with just 5.0 No need for a sub in the back room.

I love watching the process here, this will be a great game room. Awesome color choice as well.

    #79 8 years ago

    Waiting for updated pictures.

    #80 8 years ago

What would be cool is put an overhead camera above the pool table and patch it in the the tv's.

Heresy! Everything is better with a sub!

Seriously, your game room is looking great!

If you actually read, you would see I am still on the hunt for a Pin that will be good for the whole family. It's coming, but I need to have the room finished and see where my funds are at to decide on what Pin I will be able to afford.

    #83 8 years ago

Pick up a White Water (WH2O) - fairly inexpensive (~$4K) and very classy - family friendly theme with excellent sound and call-outs, good visuals / light show, excellent game play action and an attractive cabinet with a cool topper. (That's probably my next addition.) Other recommendation would be Pirates of the Caribbean (POTC). Newer machine, family friendly as everyone loves the Disney theme, another movie installment coming soon so still relevant, lots were made by Stern so can get one for under $5K - also mods available that you can have fun with as well...

Not to worry my friend. Most of us enjoy the updates as they are related. The title does say "game room" after all. And about getting that first machine, you'll get there when you get there.
Enjoy the thread, keep it up!

Furniture is ariving. Next Wednesday the pool table arives.

Are there any pinball shows in the Midwest coming up soon? Need to find the one.

I gotta see that table set up, I really miss mine.

Not sure if I ever made mention of it, I placed my down payment on the pool table before I even hired a contractor. I have been wanting a pool table ever since we bought this house (10 years ago). Kids and life got in the way. Now that they are growing up and I had the time . . . The rest is on the posts above.

    #88 8 years ago

And now I really want to get a pinball machine or 5 or 6 too. But I left plenty of space in the back arcade room for future expansion of the collection.

    #89 8 years ago

Can't wait until you get your first machine, then we can watch in real time how everything you currently have in the basement starts fading away to make room for more pins I remember when I first thought I had "plenty of space".

I remember when i had a pool table taking away pin space too

Don't let these other guys dissuade you from getting a table. There are many Pinsiders that want or have a table and love having a variety of things to do in their game room. I just wish I had room to set my table back up.

Oh if I had the space I'd have one.

    Set up starting.

Looks great I just hate bringing games up and down the stairs in my basement.

    #95 8 years ago

if you are buying just one haha yeah right only one, I would test out many and find which one u really want as a keeper. show is a good idea to play a variety.

    basement lookin good!

Thinking about a family friendly pin for your basement - Diner or Taxi (if you can find ones in good shape) are usually around $2K. Not a bad price and totally loved by kids and adults...

    #99 8 years ago

    Scared Stiff....

    #100 8 years ago

I don't consider Diner family friendly.. not the way Babs is going at that hot dog.
