For those with early solid state games from Williams, Gottlieb, and Bally which use a 6 inch full range speaker, they have been hard to find at times. I've found an excellent replacement at Newark (formerly MCM Electronics).

    http://www.newark.com/mcm-audio-select/55-5690/6-5-full-range-dual-cone-speaker/dp/95Y2940?ost=55-5690&scope=partnumberlookahead&exaMfpn=true&searchref=searchlookahead&ddkey=http%3Aen-US%2FElement14_US%2Fw%2Fsearch

It's 6.5 inches but the mounting holes all line up with 6 inch original speakers. This is full range, 8 ohms @ 50 watts. I just put one in an Eight Ball Deluxe and it fit & worked perfectly. So crisp and clear is the sound now. We just bought a dozen of them because the price was so good. Each speaker was individually boxed too. We paid about $6 per speaker.

    Newark # 95Y2940 or MCM # 55-5690.

Have you found any good replacement speakers for the stern pro model speakers?

    Quoted from SDAmusements:

Have you found any good replacement speakers for the Stern pro model speakers?

No, I haven't really looked for modern Stern machine speaker replacements. Most people were simply buying Pinball Pro or Flipper Fidelity upgrade speaker kits.

The specs I've seen for Stern "pro" speakers are these:

Cabinet floor speaker: 8 inch, round, woofer, 4 ohms, 25 watts

Backbox speakers (both are the same): 4 inch, square, midrange, shielded magnet, 8 ohms, 10 watts

My buddy Welby Bergum and I have been doing so many older Williams, Gottlieb, and Bally solid states lately. I'm seeing more and more coming in with bad speakers (rotted, corroded, blown, or dead). Had an Addams Family come in 3 weeks ago which had virtually nothing left of the paper cone in the cabinet floor speaker. Those MCM/Newark 6 inch speakers are a godsend and at such a reasonable price too.

Do they have an 8" you have found works, Ken?

Thank you sir! Just ordered 6. Had to replace a missing one in Data East and ended up slapping a Stern modern one in as a placeholder

If you're talking about an 8 inch woofer for the cabinet bottom in a Stern Pro, check out these two speakers:

    http://www.newark.com/mcm-audio-select/55-3231/70w-rms-4-ohm-rubber-surround/dp/43W7872

    http://www.newark.com/mcm-audio-select/55-3210/100w-rms-4-ohm-paper-cone-woofer/dp/43W7867?st=8%20inch%20speaker

And check out those prices, very reasonable.

One is rated at 70 watts and the other at 100 watts. They aren't gonna blow!

Those were from just taking a quick look on Newark's website. I have not actually tried those 8 inch ones.

I forgot about Data East. Never paid much attention to the speakers they had. Guess I'll have to check out the next one that comes in for repair or restoration here.

Game Plan might use the same speaker too.

Thank you sir! Just ordered 6.

You ought to receive them quick. Newark is in South Carolina and ships speakers via UPS. We got ours in a week since we are in Washington state.

Thanks for the notice. They looked good so trying 10 of them.

Wondering if these will work in a Sinbad?

Thanks - I ordered a few of these.

Picked up a Bunch too! Thanks!

Just to add to this thread, if anyone with a Bally classic with the volume control mounted on the coin door, here is the correct volume control for you:

    https://www.jameco.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&freeText=140514&langId=-1&storeId=10001&productId=140514&krypto=jnhODawy5%2Frl%2Ff63cm3HsfgdnTUpjE2armGD8g1oT3G12sxv0QS5GjyMxoLNTTys5cAP765sw6fT8ZXqORrVytXVGtZyQSJ%2Fg7DxMjY3kDc%3D&ddkey=https%3AStoreCatalogDrillDownView

Jameco Electronics # 140514 just $3.95 each. Time to replace those old "scratchy" or fluctuating ones.

This also works on classic Stern solid states.

thanks for the links! Will have to keep this thread in my back pocket for when I'm needing these!

I have a PLPW8D laying around from an arcade project it wouldn't fit into. I will have to try it out also. Glad I found this thread.

I just put one into a Stern Orbiter 1 machine. It's a bit tricky getting it to fit because of the unusual mounting place in the neck of the machine. I'll try to get pictures later today. It does fit perfectly on the speaker mounting board, but you need to use 3 inch long screws to mount the whole works back in the machine.

Ken, I have quite a few Gottlieb, Bally and Williams early SS pins. The speakers all appear to be original and work. Is it worth $6.00 to replace these speakers in your opinion? Is the fidelity and clarity a little better or a lot better? I like to keep original parts on my restorations, but good sound is important enough to spend a few bucks on if they are noticeably better.

Mr. Layton, I want you to know that you are one of my favorite posters. You are knowledgeable and always willing to share your expertise here on Pinside. If it is a KenLayton post, then I know that it will be worthwhile!

The Eight Ball Deluxe and the Stern Orbiter 1 I just put these speakers in sure sound alot better and crisper! Great for games with speech.

How much are you guys paying for shipping?

    #25 5 years ago

I think for the dozen we bought was about $25 on UPS. US Mail would have been about $45.

Thanks. I put 10 in my cart and cheapest shipping was $45. Must be more expensive to CA.

The cost of shipping 10 to WI is $24.72

Will have to get a few of these soon! They look mighty hefty compared to the stock units.

    #29 5 years ago

Any other speaker sizes/games in this value to share?
Backbox speakers that rock as well?

    #30 5 years ago

I just ordered six. Shipping to Tucson, AZ was $24.49. Check all shipping option pricing. The USPS priority mail was cheaper than the 3-5 day ground shipping.

I am only going to replace the talkers and pins with more sophisticated sounds. I will not be replacing the speakers in Future Spa , Harlem Globetrotters On Tour and Phoenix. I doubt the speaker will add much to the simple bleeps and bloops of the really early SS games.

    Thanks Ken!

Ken, thanks a ton for posting this info. Just used one of these to replace a damaged speaker in a Jungle Lord and it was a perfect drop-in replacement.

    Cheers!

I have one in my Meteor and while the original wasn't blown, I put one of these in there anyway since I had to order one for my Stargazer build. It sounds soooo much fuller. Well worth the few $$.

    #33 5 years ago

Just got my order yesterday, while my current project doesn't have speech, this is a much nicer looking speaker than what was in it.

Just picked up a 1980 Gottlieb Panthera. My 1st non-EM. Will these fit in backbox? Someone stuff a car speaker behind the mounting bracket

    Update - it fits.

    #41 5 years ago

Have to say, these work as advertised. Dropped one in an Eight Ball Deluxe and a Meteor. Couldn't have been simpler. The sound quality is improved, but not dramatic. Also, I ordered 4 speakers to get the price break and one was bad (no bass). At $6, it's not worth returning, but just a heads up.

If you need a replacement speaker, don't hesitate!

Daughter: DAD!! huge box at the door!! What you get?
Me: WTF ? What can be in that box?
Daughter : Can i open it?

Bought a set for my machines. I have yet to install them, but this is how they were shipped less the brown packing paper I already removed.

Thanks Ken for the lead, just ordered a box of these myself !

    #46 5 years ago

Just checked their stock. As of today, there is only 16 left. Next shipment is due on June 17, 2019. I'd say if you guys need any now, you'd best get them ordered now or else wait until June 17th.

    #47 5 years ago

Thanks for the tip KenLayton! I ordered 4 and am expecting Time Warp to sound better than 1979.
The other 3 are for future pins.

This speaker model is now listed on the Newark website as "no longer available". Any other recommendations either at Newark or elsewhere?
