I bought an original nes.
I bought an everdrive. (Holds every nes game plus hacks and nes arcade games)
I bought a light gun.
I bought a small crt at a thrift shop.

All under $200
Sheesh... this little classic console is serious old old tech. The buzz is just ridiculous

#311 7 years ago

Lol!
We make all this room for pinball machines, but for classic gaming we want the smallest area possible... and then want flat square cell shaded graphics??? Go original! Get a crt! It plays perfect and looks perfect! Get an everdrive and you can have every game!

Not to mention using a real nes light gun

Just bought a Rasberry Pi 3 with Retropie. NES30 Pro Bluetooth controller. Can't wait to try it out!

Let us know how it goes!

Quoted from chuckwurt:

My brother built me a raspberry pi with retro pi on it and like every game from nes to PlayStation. Awesome!!

I really like that little design, did he have a like for what he bought to put it all together?

Did anyone have the Power Glove? Fess up!

It's so bad!

Should have kept it, but it traded for JD, guess I could make another sometime

Quoted from woody24:

Also probably doesn't hurt that Microsoft screws up their systems. Just bought a XBone before Christmas with their special pricing, after loving my PS4 for over a year now. And they're still making the menu system a cluster. I have no idea how to navigate around. They ended up doing the same with the 360 over time, and I eventually stopped playing it because of it. And I actually haven't touched my Xbone since Christmas because the menu makes me feel claustrophobic.

What are you talking about!??!! Do you just fumble menus with consoles, or do you play games?? I'm confused abou.. (sorry, confusing question)

#613 7 years ago
Quoted from woody24:

Microsoft has just made it confusing to use. I had no idea where to launch my game from. It's pretty obvious where stuff is at with the PS4. The first gen of the 360 software was so much easier to use and navigate through their menu system.

I just had to rib you, the xbone menus totally suck, but I think that about a lot of UI's these days, including pinball menus and everdrives

#618 7 years ago
Quoted from xsvtoys:

I've had an Xbox One for quite a while and I agree. The menu system sucks. Every time I turn the damn thing on I fumble around before I get to what I want. You would think Microsoft could figure out how to design an interface by now. But like you said, UIs everywhere are pretty lousy these days. It seems the art of designing a simple, effective, and efficient interface is fading. But I will tell you what I think is a nice one: LaunchBox. I have this installed on a gaming PC and it has a nice menu to launch everything - all the PC games including Steam as well as all of the emulators, MAME, NES, SNES, Gameboy, Wii, GameCube etc etc. It works great and is customizable. I haven't been able to get it to work with the pinball software yet though. I think it will do it with enough work. It's worth a look if you would like a gaming PC front end alternative to Hyperspin. I tried Hyperspin and it was such a tiresome mishmash I quickly gave up on it.

I'll have to try launchbox, I dove into hyperspin a while back and fell in love. I have several setups that work great, it's not for everyone, it's very hard to set up in the beginning, but that was years ago. Hs used to have a great community, but the site crashed or something and the backlog forum was lost, it hasn't been the same since. There were some amazing artists there, they would have done well in pinball.

Quoted from mbaumle:

I personally love my Wii U, and I love the fact that I can play my library of Wii games on it as well.
But if we're talkin' Zelda, the BEST console to play the most amount of Zelda games is definitely the GameCube hands down. You can literally play every single Zelda game released up to that point (given you have the gameboy adaptor and the Zelda: Collectors Edition), AND OoT and Master Quest.
Honestly, the GameCube is a pretty damn good console. Had good processing muscle too. Arguably more powerful than the PS2, but just shy of the Xbox.

Dang good console, wish I had more time for video games in general, I never had enough time to explore the gc library... but I do have enough time to put 100+ hours into a pinball restore

So, I was looking on eBay for the new nes, and it looks like folks are selling them fully modded with a whole list of games now

Anyone else see this?

Quoted from BoJo:

Very easy to do on your own. 2.12 is expected to be out soon.

Very nice, I should stay in more

Quoted from dmbjunky:

Man I loved hanging out on gbatemp about seven years ago. It educated me on flash carts and emulators.

dood! GBAtemp was the place!!! for me it was 10 years... I feel old now

#980 7 years ago
Quoted from dmbjunky:

Don't worry about it. I'm in the prime of my life and I'm probably older than you. It's all in your outlook.
So is the consensus to wait a little longer on VR? I'm not an early adopter. I like for there to be good games available when I buy a system.

yes, Im waiting on VR....I need a solid plug and play solution with most of the bugs worked out and accessory equipment available, and when Im ready, I'll go all in... ever read "Ready Player One"?

#984 7 years ago
Quoted from dmbjunky:

I'd like to sometime. I know it's gonna be a movie soon.

Read it before you see the movie, its chock full of 80's reference in arcade and pop culture, I'm sure the movie won't do it full justice.

#986 7 years ago
Quoted from woody24:

That's my worry. Read a while back that it sounds like Spielberg may strip a lot of his own references and other 80's references out. That the story isn't about all that stuff. I think that's what I remember reading anyway.
Hopefully it will at least be fun.

I have no doubt it will be fun, the nostalgia that kept me hooked was waiting on the next reference that tied my arcade and movie and tv hobby with my childhood... so I hope he doesn't strip too much out

#989 7 years ago
Quoted from dmbjunky:

I find that watching the movie, based on a book, first is a better experience. It usually doesn't make the book worse.
Does anybody think Spielberg isn't as good as he used to be? I'm just not excited anymore when I hear his name attached to something. The last movies of his I watched were Lincoln and Tintin and both were OK but forgettable. Sorry for the OT.

Everyone seems to be on one side of the fence or the other when it comes to book before movie...

I agree now that you mention it, Spielberg is still good, but not as good as he has been in the past when it comes to revealing mysteries

Hi guys, I see you’re all mostly into original or at least official hardware.

I’d like to introduce the MiSTer project. It’s an FPGA device that has had a great backing. It has most consoles 1to1 hardware emulation (not software emulation) cores .

https://www.retrorgb.com/mister.html

https://hothardware.com/reviews/mister-diy-console-fpga

I think It’s absolutely amazing.

I built a project out of it, I’ve been waiting 30 years to use this broken GE alarm clock. I was considering the pi4, but then stumbled on the mister when researching Some shmups stuff.

I ripped most of the broken guts out and wired in the switches and buttons, as well as a pico clock to keep that old school alarm clock feel. This boasts entire organized collections for more than the cores listed in the photos. It’s pretty much the all in one hardware accurate cart/arcade/cd/computer console. It’s an ongoing project, so new stuff is added weekly from the developers.
About to bring in my 37” Sony trinitron crt to run this on.
