Year or so ago I converted an old Sega Genesis 6 button joystick into a bluetooth controller. Today I connected it to my Switch to play the 30th Anniversary Collection of Street Fighter. So cool. I played SFII with this controller on the Genesis all the time. Takes me right back.

I was sorting through some boxes and found a winter 2002 Nintendo product catalog. If anyone wants it I'll mail it to you, if it's not claimed by the weekend it'll go in the trash.P1030568 (resized).JPGP1030568 (resized).JPG

#2554 3 years ago

I’ll take it before it goes into the trash. But if any other collectors want first it that’s alright too.

Pm me if there’s no interest and I’ll send you money to ship it out.

That was kind of a fun time. Used to work at Kmart when the PS2, Xbox, and Advcanced all came out. I always enjoyed when we got a new shipment of consoles in. Opening the big box of random stuff. Finding them in there. Stocking them in the case. Pretty sure I USED to have some of the advertisements or displays we used to have. But were thrown out during one of my many moves since.

After a lot of research on arcade sticks that can change from 4-way to 8-way on the fly without opening the cabinet, I just ordered a trio of Mag-Stik Plus (https://www.ultimarc.com/arcade-controls/joysticks/mag-stik-plus/) from the UK plus ball tops. Two for my Tankstick, one for my Mayflash F500 Elite. Lots of nice joysticks out there that can be changed between 4 and 8 way, but pretty much all of them you need to open the cabinet and swap out the restrictor plate. Kind of a deal killer. There's one stick that seems to swap between 2, 4, 8, and other modes on the fly via software, but I have no idea of that's easily swappable into other joystick cabinets like these are.

Really excited to get these. It's pretty damn huge to be able to play 4-way games with true 4 directional joysticks. There is a little workaround you can do in MAME that will help though. https://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=370173&page=&view=&sb=5&o=&vc=1

But it's kind of tedious to make these files for every game you want to restrict to 4-way. There must be an easier way?

Ultimarc used to sell a stick called the E-stik that offered 4-8 way switching by reaching under the CP and rotating a restrictor plate ring. That's what I have on my MAME cab. They aren't too tough to work with. And you simply MUST have a 4-way stick for some games; it's nearly impossible otherwise.

Quoted from VALIS666:

Anyone have a good arcade stick recommendation for classic arcade games and SHMUPS via MAME? Almost every stick on the market seems to be made for fighting games, so the joysticks have a long throw action. I need really short, quick movements for classic stuff like Pac-Man, Robotron, DK, and all those great shooters

Ultimarc have great products and I would have recommend that joystick for one that will switch between 4-way and 8-way, but your original need was a really short, quick action. I still suggest a leaf switch joystick for better fine tuning and quicker smoother action. That ultimarc one will just have clicky micro switches like a fight stick. Personally I prefer a clicky micro switch joystick, but if you want to be authentic to a old arcade then leaf switch is the way to go.

Yeah, yours was a great suggestion I considered for a while, but for now I'm better off with quick switching between 4 and 8-way. If I ever build a cabinet or control panel, I'm definitely going to put that authentic arcade 4-way in it as an extra stick.

Can this Mag-Stik be installed in place of the joysticks on a X-Arcade?

#2565 3 years ago
Quoted from djreddog:

I don’t know for certain but you probably could with some customization. The ultimarc sticks are the same as a (American) Suzo-Happ style joystick so I think the mounting plate is larger and thicker then a Sanwa joystick. I don’t know what’s in the X-Arcade but I’d assume it’s The American style Happ joystick from looking at pics quickly on the web.

#2566 3 years ago

The bat top or ball top is inter changeable depending on your preference. Usually Japanese games had ball tops and American games had Bat top. You can also get long or short joysticks depending on your control panel thisckness. The choices are pretty limitless.

Quoted from djreddog:

There's enough height clearance, but it looks like this guy used a universal mounting plate to get the holes to line up. It's such a long video I might have missed something though. I wanted to wait to see them in person though to find out what I might need (or not need).

#2568 3 years ago

Got my Mag-Stik Pluses today. It's brilliant, just what I was looking for. Solid and heavy, short throw, firm action, and like I said, switchable from 4 to 8-way from above. Feels like a classic Williams or Atari arcade stick, if not better. So I figure I'll drop one in the Mayflash F500 first before I tackle the bigger job of the Tankstick, and...

IMG_20210121_190005 (resized).jpgIMG_20210121_190005 (resized).jpg

Yeah. Well that ain't happening. Luckydogg420 you seem to know a lot about this stuff, would you happen to know what cables I'd need? Presumably I run one pair of wires from each of the Left, Right, Up, Down parts of the board to the corresponding switch? Thanks.

#2569 3 years ago

There’s one wire that is a shared ground for each switch, that’s the outside tab on the micro switch. You can just daisy chain them together. It’s probably the black wire, or the thickest trace on the board.

Then one wire for each direction will go onto the (I think) middle tab of the switch, you’re looking for the one labeled N/O normally open. Remember you’re looking at the back side and the directions are flipped.

If your not concerned with returning to the original joystick then I’d just snip off the connector and solder wire extensions onto the switches. Use heat shrink on the connections and you’ll be going in no time.

Cool. The one question ----> Will It Pac-Man???

If it works for a good game of Pac-man, then this should be a great solution for getting 4 way and 8 way in one stick. I think that is the key test. All other games should work OK if that works (I don't do fighting games though). With Pac-Man, you have to have instant and consistent response in the exact direction you want to go, otherwise, it never seems right.

The one thing you miss out on is a 45 degree setup for QBert.

#2571 3 years ago

The mag sticks (in 4-way mode) do OK for pac man. But nothing beats the orignal control.

I got a raspberry pi 4 setup with an arcade punks image for retro arcade gaming. Everything is great other than every game starts with a bezel around the screen. Anybody have an idea how to remove all the bezels?

I think it must be in the configuration files. I downloaded one, pulled all the roms, bios, and configs and did a fresh install of RetroPie, and the screen bezels are still there. Never installed any extra plugins, so it must be tied to the config files somehow.

Nice. Get yourself a voice module and the Type & Tell cart as well, those things are tons of fun. Back in the day my friend and I could have a fun night just drinking beer and typing silly shit for the voice module to say. (not my video below, just an example)

For some sick reason I’ve been drawn to the Virtual Boy lately. I think there’s only one or two games that I’d even play, and prices are crazy, but for some reason I want to play one again. I only played one for about 25 min, 25 years ago. Nothing about that memory makes me want to get it, yet I’ve been drawn to it.

The VB is a truly unique experience in gaming. The 3D actually works well, but all red plus having to crouch in front of the visor to play was far worse than VR headsets of today. One of Nintendo's rare failures.

I worked at Babbages when they were for sale. We had a demo unit chained to the counter so no one would swipe it...LOL. We sold maybe two or three that I can remember. Everyone thought that it was cool, but not worth the money for a tiny red and black screen, that a lot of people said made them nauseous. Honestly, the only game I remember liking was a Mario/Wario tennis game. I still have the demo unit in a closet. (Managers prerogative)

Remember playing one once at Walmart or something like that. Then in 1998 the brother of the girl I JUST started dating picked one up at a yard sale and it took all my might to act too cool to wanna play it. haha.

I grabbed 2 blockbuster units with the hardcases super cheap back in the day, also managed to score the original box for one. I wonder how many of the VBs manufactured wound up as BB rentals? Seemed to be a bunch back then
