This is a Crouse Hinds WALK / DONT WALK pedestrian signal from the late 1940’s. It has 2 transformers so that it can display WALK and then DONT WALK. 3A23478C-836C-4971-BCD8-BAFE83FDAF9D (resized).jpeg3A23478C-836C-4971-BCD8-BAFE83FDAF9D (resized).jpeg8606A565-EAA6-4736-82B2-D2971A30F3FE (resized).jpeg8606A565-EAA6-4736-82B2-D2971A30F3FE (resized).jpeg87D6DBA7-55D3-4DA4-900B-0D14C6FF00AB (resized).jpeg87D6DBA7-55D3-4DA4-900B-0D14C6FF00AB (resized).jpeg

    Quoted from ZooDude:

Pretty sure those are movie props, not from an actual restaurant, I was under the impression that that restaurant was just made up for the movie, although I certainly remember Sambos, which was not far off.
    B

A little googling and Wikipedia confirms there were 3 actual restaurants in Salt Lake City, Utah; Portland, Oregon and Spokane, Washington that opened between 1929 and 1931. They all closed by 1957.

There was a 2001 movie “Ghost World” that used a poster of the restaurant as a plot device. Maybe a sign as well ? I haven’t viewed the film.

So, given that Hollywood is all about props on the cheap, there is no likelihood (if NEON was in the movie) that it would be a porcelain sign. The sign is most assuredly original to the restaurant but maybe a real sign or THIS ONE was actually used in the film.

Not sure if it has been mentioned here but it is well worth a trip to the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati, OH. Went for the first time yesterday and was awestruck by their collection. They have a repair studio on-site to bring and keep these gems active. Here is a sample.

    Quoted from Viggin900:

Yes, if you like neon signs it will not disappoint, also a good educational experience with the history. It's right off the expressway and a block away from the famous Camp Washington chili! Pick yourself up a 5 way and coney under a neon moon.[quoted image]

You just started a chili war…. Skyline !

Picked up another Crouse Hinds neon pedestrian signal from the late 1940’s. My collection has doubled with this pickup. IMG_4041 (resized).jpegIMG_4041 (resized).jpeg

Here is a Youtube link showing the newest add and my DONT WALK running on a sequencer. 1984 EBD in the picture.

    #2101 8 months ago
    Quoted from aahgo:

Is there a sequencer in the wait/walk sign? Or do you need to fabricate something if you wanted it to alternate?

I have not figured out the wiring to the 2 transformers in the signal. There are also 2 relays involved. I’m assuming the WALK is lit and then switches to a flashing then steady WAIT ?IMG_4039 (resized).jpegIMG_4039 (resized).jpegIMG_4040 (resized).jpegIMG_4040 (resized).jpeg

    Quoted from Electronmagic:

Is it just me, or does it look like they built all those electronics into the valve cover of a small block Chevy?

With the back cover on, it looks even better.

I had my pedestrian signal WALK sand WAIT tubes remasked at Neonworks of Cincinnati. They are located in the American Sign Museum and I saw this cool piece hanging in their shop. The American Sign Museum in Cincinnati, OH has started construction on Phase 2 that will add 16,000 sf of exhibit and event space opening July 2024. I am fortunate to be the hands-on project manager for my company that placed 280 cy of new topping slab yesterday. This cool Loyal Order of Moose sign from Lansing, Michigan Lodge 288 will be lit and on display in the new addition.
