I know this isn’t the “decorate my basement for me” thread, but… I’ve got a couple longer walls in our basement that kind of need some character. I’m relatively handy and was thinking about making a little mixed media wall art using those neon-look flexible LED strips, maybe some nice hardwoods, etc. Basement is mostly dark greys, wood grains, metal fixtures, leather furniture, etc. Kind of industrial with splashes of pop culture and arcade stuff.

My struggle at the moment is I kind of dislike the redundant nature of a big-ass neon sign that says “Pinball” or “Arcade” when it’s pretty obvious (to anyone with a pulse) what the room is for. Also have a young kid, so probably shouldn’t make a giant “Bulleit Bourbon” or “Busch Light” tribute either. Anybody have any suggestions? I might just forego lettering entirely and just do some kind of abstract design or something geometric.

But, since this is the premier neon pinside thread… Any suggestions? Was toying with some less on-the-nose pinball phrases like “Replay, “Tilt,” or “Free Play.” Also pretty into Star Wars, so thought maybe a Star Wars symbol (rebel alliance, mythosaur) or phrase of some kind (“This is the Way,” “Stay on Target,” etc) might be fitting. Also considered copy-catting the Stern logo but replacing “Stern” with our family name (Stoltz). Anyway, any suggestions or thoughts are welcome!

Decided to go with the name-substitution on the Stern Logo. Have the materials now, and spent some time in photoshop getting it laid out. Looks like it might work out pretty well!

Stoltz . . . your modified logo says pinball but sounds more like a brand of beer.

Nice it looks good by the game.

So I have a JJP neon and it has two transformers on it. One of them is flaky (the one that lights up the JERSEY JACK PINBALL" text) while the other one is fine (that does the outline of New Jersey in red). I'm pretty inexperienced with these--I looked on the transformer itself and didn't see any text to indicate what kind of transformer it was to find a replacement. Are they pretty standard? Any advice on troubleshooting/repair?

I would verify a solid connection from the wires of the transformer to the neon tube wires. Usually hit in a rubber cap of sorts. obviously with the unit off and unplugged

So you could have a few issues here .....
    1. most common on these cheaper neons, the power supply is failing. One easy way to validate this is to take the other power supply, the one running the part of the sign that doesn't have issues, and attach the leads to the part of the sign that's not working. If the neon lights up without issue then you know it's the transformer.
    2. The tube is going bad. Again, following the instructions in #1 as you know that transformer is good so if you connect it and still have the issue then you know it's the tube that's going bad.
    3. You're not getting a good connections. Take off the rubber boots and untwist the wires. When neon tubes are made they're dipped in paint. Some times the paint on the leads (wires) is really thick and it doesn't make a good connection. While this does happen, I am betting on #1 or 2.

CAUTION - remember these things are high voltage. Never work on them while on and make sure if you're jumping wires they're protected from touching anything, especially each other

Hi all, I have a bad transformer, see pics. I want to buy a new one but do not know how much KV do I need. Can anyone advise how much I would need based on my old transformer ratings? Thanks in advance!!

Im pretty sure you just need to make sure the hz is the same and that it will supply a minimum of the old supply’s 9000 volts. My buddy just replaced his old 9k transformer with a 10k off amazon

    #1369 2 years ago

Something like this should work fine.

I was lucky enough to find an old arcade sign from North St. Paul Minnesota. The arcade was "Video Gamers". The owner kept the sign, and did not have room to display it. I had to have the transformers replaced, and there was a perfect fit above my pins. I live on a lake and when this sign is lit up, you can see it across the lake. A few people across the lake thought a bar had opened up.

There was a guy selling a different one at York, it looked pretty nice.

Either one would look great in my game room

Very cool too. I really like best the neon on top of painted signs I think, so sixgill's piece is top notch for my taste.

I picked up a non working vintage neon sign recently. No broken tubes. Is there a way to tell if it needs a new transformer or the neon is outgassed? (not sure if that's the correct terminology)

My wife chipped in to help me buy this Adel Brau (Glo-Dial) neon clock as an early Christmas present. Just have to figure out where to hang it.

I have the recognizer one that's been posted on this thread twice, but in "Tron 2.0" corruped yellow-green color. I know, I can't ever just follow the crowd.

I just want to point out that this thing is STILL working, and currently running 24 hours a day for the last month or two. For something I paid 150 bucks for 7 or 8 years ago from some independent Chinese/Taiwanese independent shop, that's some ungodly value right there!

The Williams and Yuengling signs I bought on Ebay from Gu years ago are still working as well. The Yuengling starts off a little dim now, but after a few minutes is nice and bright.
