I have been looking for one of these and found one somewhat local.

It sure looks similar, even though the eBay ad has a generic pic.

I think I'm going to gamble $200 and find out. Your sign looks amazing. I need it in my life. I'll never be able to afford the game, but dammit pinball gods let me have the sign.

The E bay signs are from the exact same place. If you search Big Bang Bar neon there is Quite a few listings with different sizes listed and different prices. The $200 signs are larger then some of the other listings or the ones I organized to have made. Also Rick never sent me a cease and desist letter...that’s false, he called and asked me to stop having them made as he claimed to have the rights.

I recently acquired this from the estate of my parent's neighbor. Looks to be all original from 1968 and still working. Any suggestions on the most practical way to touch up the flaking black coating on the tubes? Also, the red tube seems brighter than the white/yellow tube and is actually eye straining to look at. Is this normal? There is no adjustment on the transformer.

The red rocks. Clear tubes w/ neon gas look the best imo. Yes it’s normal

I have also such a "china BBB sign" and I am quite happy with it.
Same for the JJP sign, they were sold out and were around 400 EURO, china-sign was under 200 and works fine.
Colors are natural mich nicer than on the pics.
The WOZ playfield is fitted with RGB LED and a rasperry, the animation is 1 from the original attract mode, very nice wallhanger.

    Quoted from Betelgeuse:

Any suggestions on the most practical way to touch up the flaking black coating on the tubes?

I've used a simply paint pen.

    #1110 3 years ago
    Quoted from Betelgeuse:

Any suggestions on the most practical way to touch up the flaking black coating on the tubes?

Go buy some rustoleum black enamel paint and cheap paint brush and brush it on. It's as close to the blackout paint that is used on neon signs. If the black paint is really bad take the tube off the sign, clean it and fill a cheap aluminum pan with the paint and simply dip the tube into the paint. Just go slowly as you don't want to dip too far. It's easier then it sounds to do an it makes the tube look new.

    Quoted from Betelgeuse:

Also, the red tube seems brighter than the white/yellow tube and is actually eye straining to look at. Is this normal?

Yes, normal since the red tube is not painted. There's only a few colors that they were able to produce with gas so you'll notice that manufactures painted a lot of the tubes the colors they desired. The painted tubes have less brightness to them as the paint knocks the brightness down whereas the red tube is clear glass with red gas in it!

If a sign is too bright you can always add a dimmer to it. Dimmers are available through online places like https://www.firehouseneon.com/products/plug-in-neon-dimmer-conventional. This is just an example as I wouldn't pay 100$ for a dimmer. Sure there's cheaper ones out there or used ones on eBay.

    #1111 3 years ago

Thanks for all of the detailed info and resources, guys! I am going to try to get this sign looking like new again and don't want to screw it up. I knew about the red being neon gas, but would like to be able to dim it a little since it is so piercing that I see sun spots after looking at it. It's just a bit too much and I didn't see any way to adjust it on the transformer, so I wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. I will have to do some digging on those dimmers.

Are the bumper caps available for purchase somewhere?

    #1113 3 years ago
    Quoted from DennisDodel:

Are the bumper caps available for purchase somewhere?

We had the bumpercaps from a guy in the german forums at flippermarkt.de , price was around 17 Euro.

    https://www.flippermarkt.de/community/forum/threads/coole-lampen-50-75-100-points-when-lit-zum-selber-basteln.163630/

They are a pretty cheap tweak:
The lamps are from "IKEA" or cheap furniture store and were 2,22 Euro each.
The popbumper design is plottet foil. You need a plotter and some foil.
This was coated with a thin layer of clearcoat.
    Thats it ....

Now I wait for the first moneymaker on pinside to offer this lamps for 150 bucks .. that would be the normal pinside way

For the DIY guys follow the link. Maybe you need to create a account to see the pictures.

Picked up this one for the kitchen/dining room a few months ago, again ....old school neon. Hard to tell from the picture but the top portion is pink and the bottom half is white.

I'd love to try my hand at repairing some neon signs. Glass bending and all. Anyone know of a good source for a nice set of everything you would need to get started with this? Could be fun to learn I think.

I would recommend checking Craigslist (seriously) as neon is a dying art and a lot of people that did it as a business, unfortunately, are closing down.

Unfortunately Mt Vernon Neon closed down this year. They use to offer neon making classes where you would go to their plant and they would teach you how to do the job! Being they were like 5 hours from you, you could've signed up for the three day course!

A great place to start is the Museum of Neon Art website. MONA is in Los Angeles and has neon sign tours in LA, a large art gallery, and offers classes in person and on zoom. Check them out for making your own neons.

As others have said, that 7up sign is all sorts of awesome. Did a search on eBay and found several cheap ones from China for about $120 and also the real deal, supppsedly, for $3k.

Here’s the cheapie if anyone’s interested:

There was, maybe is a place on the IL WI boarder that was a school. UW Madison has a course as well that you can take. Maybe contact them for info.

My OCD kicked in and the neon collection is getting out of hand.

    Here are my rare ones:

Schlitz On Tap: Came from a somewhat local facebook listing, but I don't know much about it other than its a 1977 and quite rare to find in perfect condition. I liked the looks and had to have it.

Koehler On Tap: Came from a local bar, and has local cult following due to the now demolished Jackson Koehler Eagle Brewery in Erie, PA. I was too young to know what beer was when this brewery was operating. The HV transformer was replaced but the sign is estimated to be in the early 60's based on the frame design. Very awesome to have.

Carling: This one is super rare but most people have not heard of it before. This sign was a craigslist find and had been listed for over 2 months. I had a hard time getting the seller to meet, so I remained persistent. Probably my top favorite. The carling tube is bent with extra pride and care whoever the bender was, and a very quality "rube red" tube was used for the border. The craftmanship overall is unsurpassed in any sign I have seen. The pictures do not showcase its true colors.

    More to come:

The camera will not capture the vibrant colors, which is a shame. When the pinball room is lit with neons, nothing else compares. Not even LED's. Also there is something special about the neon HV transfomers unique buzz. It is very "alive".

If you want to photograph a neon and get its colors to show, set the neon on a granite countertop. Take a pic of the neon and the neon reflection in the counter. The counter reflection will show correct colors.
