The greatest drummer of my lifetime died 1 year ago today. I remember hearing the news and having this tremendous empty feeling it left in me. I hardly ever drink. But, that evening, I proceeded to get plastered and watched several Rush concerts in my pin barn.
I have my brother to thank for introducing me to his greatness, the band's greatness. As a sophomore in high school, my older brother took me under his wing and along with he and his friends, attended what would be the 1st of 11 Rush concerts (the Moving Pictures warm up tour) over 3 decades I would attend.
Neil immediately stood out to me, as a completely off-the-chart drummer. More impressive, was his lyrics. Songs like Subdivisions spoke directly to me, as an under the radar, not too popular, high school student.
I feel so fortunate to have had Neil and Geddy and Alex's music in my life, for most of my life. I'm sad today, but more so, grateful. RIP Neil and cheers to you.
