For your first picture:

There is a star post behind the metal guide beside the spring you can barely make out...it supports the other side of the gate.

Looks like you've got the tapered sleeves on the wrong posts.

If you need a better shot of the wire gate, I'll need to take the ramp off...but you should be able to get a sense of how it works from the photo on Marco's website. Basically, the under PF coil pulls in when the ball hits its first switch, and the spring lifts the gate up, as it is attached to the gate arm closest to the back of the playfield.
