Was wondering if someone could help me out on a problem im having with a revenge from mars. We started with a dead machine we bought from someone else. After we got it somewhat playable, None of the solenoids on the playfield worked, fuse was blown. Replaced fuse, ran solenoid test, fuse blew again. Checked coils, found that the left alien solenoid that makes the alien shake up and down was shorted out as well as a solenoid that pops up a post on the play field. We unhooked those coils and put a new fuse in and all the other coils on the play field started working fine. We replaced the bad coils with new and replaced the bad transistors that drove them and a bad resistor. Went into test mode and they started firing on and off like they are supposed to for a few seconds before the transistors started smoking. We are confused of why just those two solenoids are having problems. Far as we can tell the harness isnt shorting out anywhere. Do coils on pinball 2000s need diodes on the coils themselves too, the new coils we installed already had them on there, but i read somewhere pinball 2000 coils other than flippers dont need diodes on the coils?

Thanks

Did the old coils have diodes ? If not, you should have removed them from the new coils, or risk damaging new transistor and coil.

yeah the old ones did

Yes I read up on that just now. Williams did bring the diodes back on P2K.

Then you need to get the wires back in the correct spots. And be sure on the new coil the diode is facing the right direction.

I might point out. If those coils were bad before you replaced them and their transistors. Something else caused this. Probably on the driver board upstream from the transistors.

any ideas on what to look for upstream? Thank you for the help btw

Quoted from Frostbite:

any ideas on what to look for upstream?

Pre drive transistors, IC's next. After that no idea.
