I have a sys 6 drive board that I am pulling my hair out on, finally swapped a known working drive board
in the pin in question and all is fine I thought,
Here are the symtoms. I am blowing IC 17 on the switch row column, some times it will take out the PIA
All are in sockets. It will boot fine play for several minutes then blow IC17
even with the proven replacement board I thought it was fixed, then blew a half hour into game play
It has to be in the playfied. but I can not find any issues, I unsoldered suspect diodes for IC 17 string and found no problems on checking, I am stumped where to look next.

You must have a short on one of the strobe lines associated with IC17 -- on the playfield. If would be nice to know which one causes the problem. So you have to do a visual inspection for one of the switches causing the short to something on the playfield.

Take the connector off of 2J2 and check pins 6 to 9 for voltage to ground. Activate the switches associated each of the IC 17 strobe lines and see if you can identify the switch with the problem.

If you have a logic probe check check IC 17 to determine which of the outputs is failed. Then check the switches associated with that strobe line.
