What is the difference & why do some recommend compound over the straight oil for the leather clutch washers?

Getting parts, supplies ready for my 1st Bingo restore. Have done several EM pins & SS pins - but this will be my first Bingo. Looking forward to the mixer unit, looks like a fun challenge.
