I picked up the device that Vid posted the eBay link and it works well to test the all the 74XX and 40XX logic and some of the linear ICs I have in my box. It did not work on a 741 op amp or the UDN7180 UDN6184.
Interestingly, I put LEDs in the socket in any orientation and the device lights them up. It also lights up an LED numeric digit display I have in my box...
I also picked up the transistor/capacitor/diode tester that seller has as well. It works nicely and can tell you value of capaicitors. For example, I replaced a bunch of capacitors in a 1987 machine thinking they all should be trash by now and they all were still working fine (according to the tester). It also identifies NPN, PNP, N and P-channel MOSFETs, SCRs, etc.
